Of the myriad sea-dwelling creatures, the sea hare of the Aplysiidae family is by far one of the most fascinating species encountered on the reef. Often lumped in with flatworms and nudibranchs due to the similarities in appearance, sea hares can be distinguished from these by their size and distinct appendages. They are actually quite hefty, with the largest species reaching up to 30 inches in length and weighing as much as 31 lbs.

The creature resembles a sea slug with rhinophores that resemble long rabbit ears — hence the nickname — and another two protrusions on either side of its mouth that aid in sensory perception. Their bodies are soft, with internal shells that facilitate structure for their delicate mantle as they vacuum algae from the sea floor, the reef, and beds of seaweed.

One interesting fact about sea hares is that their coloration is derived from the algae they eat, allowing them to efficiently camouflage themselves within the environment in which they are feeding. Sea hares are frequently found living in seaweed clusters and beds of seagrass, blending in perfectly with whichever variety is their favorite.

Interestingly enough, humans are one of the main predators of the sea hare. In China, they are commonly served fried in a seasoned sauce and wrapped in ti leaves. In addition to being a delicacy, sea hares are popular with aquarium keepers to control the buildup of algae and cyanobacteria in their tanks. However, because sea hares are constant feeders, there needs to be adequate nutrition present or they will simply starve to death.

Sea hares are hermaphroditic, but are unable to impregnate themselves due to the positioning of the sex organs. Consequently, they must still play the mating game if they expect to bring another generation into the world. Check out this interesting footage of the sea hare in action on the ocean floor!
