A must for photographers and Solo Divers

By Letsseatv

It took me three months of reading reviews about this product, I was hesitating about the construction and of the range of the signal. Meanwhile in a heavy rain, the boat lost me for about an hour. I trusted the Capitan would find me but I was concern about the crew worries and to let them know that I was OK and out of the water. I decided to buy it with reserves concerning size, durability and range. Is very well made, it might have a range of over five miles, a clear reception, is easy to u...

Haven't had to use and hope to never.

Bought as a gift for my husband. We've been talking about getting them for a couple of years. Decided it was time. Hope to never have to use, but nice to know that if lost at sea, we have a back up plan.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Shopper  how long do you need to charge the battery to keep it fully charged?
JAMES J  The battery charges very slowly. Can't tell you exact time, but allow a day (over night at least) to fully charge the unit. HOWEVER, once charged, it holds its charge a long time. You just "top it up". The folks at Nautilus are very helpful. You can contact them directly.
MICHAEL D  I can't give you a specific number but rather some insight. It charges slowly. A few hours may be required. For me after I charged it and it stopped charging automatically I would look at the percentage and see only 97%. I contacted Lifeline support and they said rely on the charging mechanism and don't worry that is doesn't read 100% when complete.
VELORA K  I have had mine for a couple years now. I charge it up before I go on a trip and the battery stays fully charged for at least a week of diving. Not sure how long the battery would last if one needed to use it - thank God I've never used mine on a dive.
LES G  After the initial charge overnight, it only takes about an hour for it to charge up. I don't keep it on the charger constantly. I really haven't needed to use it in an emergency (thankfully!) but it's good peace of mind to have, especially on a live-aboard.
Darrel P  My initial charge upon receiving the device was about 8 hours, for in wanted to ensure a full charge. Since I did overnight I don't know the exact change. I charge it before I head out on a dive trip, the longest between time has been 7 months and it still showed near full charge. While I want to ensure the charge is full, I want to assure the firmware is up to date too. Typically, it takes only about an hour in those cases.
HUGH B  I try to remember to top the battery once a month when I am not using my Lifeline. It doesn't take long to top up to 100 percent and it holds it charge very well between charges. Keeping the unit ready to use doesn't seem to be a problem.
NICHOLAS U  I haven't charged it in 6 months and the battery is above 90%. It charges over micro USB, within 3 hours.
Shopper  Does the marine radio ONLY work on channel 16 or can you switch to other channels?
ROBERT S  From my understanding it can transmit on CH16 in emergency and also set to other channels to communicate with a vessel for other situations. Those stations can be preset prior to the activity and activated with a single green button
CHARLES H  You CAN switch channels
ANDRE B  It works on any channel you want and have preselected including 16. Very easy to switch channels and the unit works really well. It saved me once and I am sold by it
ROBERT W  Does this thing send a signal to the coast guard? Ho is tit activatewd and what happens when its activated? It say the range is 8 miles? How does someone (or the coast guard find you?
WAYNE K  Yes - when you press the red emergency button it sends a standard (common) emergency signal with then GPS coordinates of the unit. It better be an emergency! The unit is registered with the US Coast Guard (or the appropriate authorities for the country or region you are in). The registration process gives the unit a unique identifying code - that way the Search and Rescue (SAR) people know who they are looking for. Think of Lifeline as akin to the the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) found in aircraft but in some ways more sophisticated. Not only can you send an emergency signal with your GPS determined coordinates it is also capable of being a two radio for comms with all nearby boats (the 8 mile range you mentioned - plus or minus) on the standard emergency maritime frequency or you can set it to a particular frequency for just the boat you are diving or operating from. One other neat function, it can record the GPS location you began your dive from - great for entering the exact location (lat/long) of the site in your dive log.
Jeffrey P  How depth can I open lid? How depth its waterproof
KEVIN F  According to the official instructions, the lid can only be opened at the surface of the water. It has to be closed when submerged. The unit is "splash" proof at the surface.
NICHOLAS U  The lid may be opened up to 10 fsw - it's only useful on the surface. The case is rated to 400 fsw.
ANDRE B  lid is only to be opened on the surface when afloat. is is water resistant but not water proof. it will break it if opened under water
MICHAEL V  The buttons under the lid are only water resistant. They are not made to used under water
Shopper  Does the unit come with a pouch or sold separately? How may one attach it to the BCD?
JAMES J  No pouch. Very secure clip if you want it hanging from you BC. Also, you can attach other types of clips to it. We have a clip that allows us to quckly reomove the device with rings or clips at each end. This way we store it in a BC pocket; it can't fall out, but it is easily removed if needed.
RUSSELL L  It does not come with a pouch. I put it in the pocket of my bcd. That will keep it from getting caught on anything or be in the way until I need to deploy the radio. However, it could be attached by the cord with a clip to your bcd, but as stated earlier, I do not think you would want this.
KATIE S  The pouch is sold separately. I did not buy it as I planned to carry the device in a pocket. The Device does have a sturdy metal clip on the back that could be used to attach to a BCD D ring easily and should not risk coming off.
MICHAEL V  no is does not. I really don't see a need for one. It's a pretty rugged unit. I just put a clip on it and attached it to my upper D-ring. I do alot of diving in Lake Michigan and 1 time I found myself 1/3 mile from my boat and it was great having that radio to call my wife on the boat
MARTHA W  The pouch comes separately & attached with velcro. I got mine after speaking to a Nautilus rep. at Beneath The Sea convention in the N.J.Meadowlands in April. Also, do not hesitate to call the Nautilus company to make sure you are using the device correctly. They are extremely helpful.
PETER R  no pouch; there is a belt-type clip that could attach to a D-ring
SCOTT B  It does not come with a pouch. I don't think that is necessary. The case is very strong and any scratches on the outside of the case will not effert perfomance of the unit. It comes with a very strong enclosed belt style clip that can be attached to your BCD or wetsuit pocket. I added a bolt snap to my Nautalus for added security so the unit con't come loose unexpectedly. It you don't use a bolt snap, I would be sure a lanyard is attached to your BCD webbing as a backup against accidental loss while diving. Scott
FRANK D  No it does not. The pouch is poorly designed in my opinion. The strap that it ued to connect to your BC has a very weak, non-locking snap. I managed to modify mine by sewing it shut, otherwise ti makes it too easy to lose the radio.
CARLOS B  It doesn't come with a pouch. I wouldn't attach it to the BCD but carry it inside one of the pockets.
MARC C  The unit does *Not* come with a pouch. There are belt clip type pouches sold separately. Leisure Pro here sells a "Nautilus Lifeline Pouch for $35.99 The unit does have a metal clip attached to the back (but the clip is also removable) that could be clipped onto your gear. There is also a nice metal ring to which you could attach a lanyard. You could place it in a BC pocket.....but one way or the other, I'd recommend a lanyard in addition.....but that's me.
NICHOLAS U  It does not come with the black pouch, and I would not use one anyways. It has a secure, metal suicide clip on the side opposite of the screen. Clip that to your right or left chest d-ring. I've popped it on and off a dozen times now, on the surface in good conditions.
