At first glance, this camera/housing/flash is really impressive! Its actually fairly large body feels very solid. The camera itself is pretty small and fits snugly into the housing. All the buttons seem to be accessible. For the actual photo quality, I took a variety of land shots and found the camera was pretty good. Sea photos were much harder to judge as this is my first UW camera. I took probably 30 photos and I got one to come in fairly clear and not look washed out. I took my test shots at 40 feet on an overcast day, camera was in sea mode, flash set at power 1. Most of my shots were blurry, problem is I dont know if it was me moving or the camera not being smart enough for autofocus! Anyway, the camera is positively buoyant so you really want to make sure that the strap is tight on your wrist. The flash takes 4 AA batteries. The door on the back of the flash seems a little hokey, a few times I wanted to test fire the flash and I couldnt get it to turn on. I believe the wiring between the door and the flash itself gets a little loose.
All in all, this is actually a little overkill for my first UW camera but I feel like it is a well designed product and that it should last me many dives.

Rating: Very nice camera with a few quirks

The first thing I noticed is the charge port plug comes completely off and it is small enough to get lost very easliy.
Second, while using the wide angle lenze the picture has no corners (they are blacked out).
Third, if you want to use this camera on the beach with the waterproof case, you better know what mode you want to use, because you cannot switch between still image and video mode when in surface mode while in the case. This would be an easy firmware fix and I hope they address it soon.
Overall it is a good camera and I would make the same purchase again.

I bought the DC1000 one week prior to a Keys trip. Set up the camera on the plane. The set up process is fully dummy proof and I got great pictures on my first dive. Way easier than my old Nikonos!
