Scuba Lab Testers Choice!

And the reviews are in:
"Divers thought the ST1 was one of the 'smoothest breathing' regulators of the bunch and gave it the highest ergonomic scores of all the regulators in this review. The comfort swivel helped boost comfort scores and test divers had praise for the user control knob and soft purge cover. This reg also received the highest score for Ease of Breathing and was the only reg rated Excellent by test divers for dryness. When we polled our test divers for their top reg in the price category, the ST1 was a clear Testers' Choice." - Scuba Lab

After 8 years of using my original regulator, I decided to splurge and upgrade. My wife had been loving her Scuba Pro regulator, saying she liked it more than her original (which was the same as mine). After learning that this regulator is designed by the guy who used to design Scuba Pros, then noting the similarities, I thought I would give it a whirl. I love it so far.

Rating: Finally able to try it!
Reviewer: Craig Cameron  -  View all my reviews
I have finally obtained all of my equipment and did open dive in the St. Lawrence River (I.e. mouth of the Great Lakes). I did a lot of research on regulators and decided to purchase the ST1. All I can say is that it was well worth the money and peace of mind knowing that the it had established such high reviews. It is one sweet and smooth regulator at depth or in the cold. Craig.

Rating: ST-1 Atomic Reg
Reviewer: John D G.
Hate to rate a product on the 1st dive ... but breathes easy down to 80 feet. Had some freeflowing from the octo until I got it adjusted. (my bad) Rinsed the SS off with fresh water and hope that it lasts as long as advertised. So far ...so good !! Ill rate again after a year.

Rating: WORTH THE EXTRA CA$H
Reviewer: Ryan W.  -  View all my reviews
You can read about the engineering and innovation that went into Atomics products all day long. Once you get the ST1 in your hands and use it for the first time, you feel like your investment was worth every penny. Its nice to make a deep dive and not think about breathing or the comfort of your regulator. After you try the comfort swivel once, youll never go back! When you get below 100 feet, you might flood your mask by smiling after you realize how easily youre breathing. When you finally come out of the salt bath and rinse off your gear, youll appreciate the sold stainless steel first stage and all of the titanium in the ST1 second stage. When youre underwater, youre on life support. Having said that (if your like me) you want the BEST! If youre considering the T2X, you can save money with the ST1 and still have that same peace of mind. Either way, you cant go wrong!

Questions and Answers for Atomic ST1 Regulator:

  • david:

I am a newly certified diver and going to purchase new equipment. Was looking at the Atomic ST1 am I crazy to spent this kind of money for only a few dives a year, and what are the pros and cons for a piston vs diaphragm regulator. Can I mix and match Octos w/ regulator. Lastly, is there a standard periodicity for maintenance, stuff that would require a shop to do on this regulator?

Aaron  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hi David, The ST1 is one of Atomic's better regulators. If you bought this one you definitely wouldn't be upgrading this one anytime soon. This regulator has a 2 year or 300 dive service plan interval. Which ever comes first. Call us at 800-347-2822 and we can talk to you about piston and diaphragm regulators.

  • david:

have decided to purchase the Atomic ST1 regulator is there a good reason to not purchase another brand Octo to save a little $

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

No reason what so ever, other than making sure it's a brand you can get serviced under warranty at what ever facility you are planning to use for your annual services. No sense paying for anything you don't have to.

  • david:

if I only dive a couple of times a year do you still recommend servicing every two years?, and is there a typical amount charged for this servicing? If it matters I am purchasing a Atomic ST1 regulator. do most service shops service many different brands?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

You've have to check with the facility you are planning to use for your servicing. They may be ABLE to service your gear, but if they are not an authorized dealer or authorized service center, they won't be able to do so under warranty. The service interval is set as it is actually WORSE for your reg to sit unused than it is to dive it daily. Seals and o-rings will flatten and gain memory, causing a drop in performance of your gear when left to sit, un-pressurized and unused over time.

  • Raul:

Hello, I am in the market for some new gear and had a few questions. I am currently looking to buy the Atomic ST1 Scuba Regulator, and was wondering if I should pair it with Atomic SS1 Scuba Octo or the Atomic Ti2 Titanium Scuba Octo. What are the pros/cons to each? What would you recommend? Thanks in advance! Best, Raul

Atomic Aquatics ST1 Regulator
Why Stainless Steel & Titanium?

Stainless Steel delivers virtually the same corrosion resistance as Titanium at a lower price. Stainless Steel does not require protective chrome or nickel plating processes that can be harmful to the environment and is 100% recyclable. The ST1 second stage features all-Titanium components as in the T2 and B2 models.

A Breath of Fresh Air
Environmentally conscious topside...natural breathing at depth
The ST1 is another industry first from Atomic Aquatics. The first stage is beautifully machined from a special grade 316 Stainless Steel that is twice the strength of brass with corrosion-resistance approaching Titanium. The use of Stainless Steel means we are doing our part for clean air when divers are out of the water. The legendary Atomic design means divers also breathe easy at depth.
First Stage:

First stage machined from solid 316 Stainless Steel
Atomic Jet Seat high-flow piston first stage
Freeze protected factory-sealed first stage also prevents contamination such as silt and sand
Nitrox ready for mixtures up to 40%
First stage ports: 2 HP fixed / 5 LP on swivel cap

Second Stage:
All-Titanium second stage construction same as Atomic T2 and B2 models
Patented Atomic Seat Saving Orifice (Titanium)
Patented Atomic Automatic Flow Control (AFC)
Rapid adjustment knob for manual second stage de-tuning in special situations
All-stainless steel Atomic Comfort Swivel standard
A new high-flow second stage case lowers breathing effort at any depth from shallow water to beyond the limits
Dual material second stage cover enables entire front to be used for purge
Dual silicone comfort fit mouthpiece with tear-resistant bite tabs
2 year / 300 dive service interval
Limited Lifetime Warranty – not contingent on proof of service
Wide exhaust deflector to disperse bubbles for enhanced visibility

Here are some important answers to frequent questions regarding Atomic regulators...

What is Natural Breathing?

Atomic Aquatics has achieved what no other manufacturer has in a high-performance regulator – Natural Breathing. All Atomic regulators breathe with a natural and controlled air delivery sensation at any depth or breathing rate. Inhalation on the surface will feel the same as it does during your deepest dive. This is in part due to the AFC (Automatic Flow Control) employed in our second stages. This patented innovation is a simple device that adjusts the airflow automatically to compensate for the effects of depth. Atomic Aquatics regulators are the smoothest breathing regulators available...period.

What are the diving benefits
of Titanium?

First, it is unbelievably lightweight which reduces stress during your dive and makes it a perfect travel regulator. Second, Titanium has no equal for corrosion resistance which means more safety, reliability and repeatable performance. And finally, its beautiful appearance stands apart from any other regulator.

Unparalleled light weight
means less stress

In our mission to invigorate the diving experience, the first priority is on reducing stress – travel stress, gearing-up stress, jaw-clinch stress. The best way is to use the lightest material possible. But light weight must never compromise strength or durability. Titanium is the perfect solution. When you hold a Titanium Atomic regulator in your hand, you immediately realize the difference from other regulators. That means less stress for you from packing your gear bag, to donning, to even the final minutes of a long dive.

Atomic ST1

Are you among those divers interested in doing your part to be environmentally conscious? If you answer yes, this regulator is for you! The Atomic ST1 was designed with today’s ecologically friendly mindset. Atomic forgoes the traditional Brass used for most 1st stages with this unit. The ST1 is machined from a solid block of 316 Stainless Steel, a material that does not need environmentally harmful processes of chrome or nickel plating to protect it from corrosion. On top of that, it is 100% recyclable! 316 Stainless steel is reported to be almost as corrosion resistant as titanium with much more strength than brass. So if doing your part to protect our environment is your driving force, this is the regulator for you! Offering 2 high pressure ports and 5 low pressure ports on a swivel cap gives this regulator a wide range of possibilities when it comes to the comfortable set up of your gear.

Internally this first stage delivers consistent air to the diver with a balanced flow-through piston that will offer the same intermediate pressure with each breath at the deepest depths or lowest tank pressures of your dive. The high pressure piston uses a seal system that is self lubricating that is designed to minimize the friction in this critical part and reduce wear and tear and in turn maintenance costs for the regulators owner.

And as if all of this technology and innovation in the Atomic 1st Stages wasn’t enough, their 2nd Stages are packed with one feature after the next all geared towards ease of breathing, longevity of the piece of equipment and low maintenance. The ST1 second stage comes equipped with a patented swivel that allows for 30 degrees of rotation without kinking your hose. It uses an adjustable, pneumatically balanced poppet incorporated into a portion of the regulator that many manufacturers are looking for ways to cut corners and reduce costs in materials. Here, Atomic leads the way by using Titanium and Kevlar in the metal internal parts. For most manufacturers that would be enough ammunition to light up the advertising and begin singing of their praises from the local mountain tops, but not with Atomic. They pressed on with redesigning two other important pieces in the 2nd stage that turned out to be so successful they were awarded patents for their efforts! The Seat Saving Dynamic Orifice was designed to reduce wear and tear on the low pressure seat and in turn increase the high performance of the second stage for the diver by making sure the orifice only comes into contact with the low pressure seat when the regulator is pressurized. The other innovation is their Automatic Flow Control. Most every manufacturer of regulators offer some sort of a venturi switch in their second stages designed to reduce breathing resistance and help with the opening of the valve that delivers air to the diver when they inhale. At Atomic they’ve perfected this into a pressure sensing, self-adjusting device that regulates the delivery of the diver’s air with every breath adjusting for increased pressure the deeper the diver descends. No more switches or dials to get that perfect breath of air!

All in all the amount of innovation, quality and precision technology put into the Atomic ST1 makes this regulator the only smart choice for any diver seeking a high performance regulator at a reasonable price that is truly environmentally friendly.
