Rating: Atomic Smoke on the Water Adjustable Spring Strap Split Fins Review - Scuba Gear Reviews

The Atomic fins are GREAT! The spring straps are the best part, easy to get on and off and very comfortable. I would never go back to regular straps again. Another good recommendation from the experts at Steve B.

Because of the angle of the foot pocket relative to the blade, these fins will make you point your toes, period! Slightly less attitude control and thrust than my Mares Volo Powers. These are very easy (and fast) to get on and off. Foot pockets are comparatively narrow and tall for a given size. I have a pair of stiff Hollis fins that a guaranteed to make your legs burn, and the Atomics are a huge improvement.

Rating: Great Fins!

Recently replaced fins I had had for years that had become extensions of my feet and have struggled to find a fin that I liked and gave me both the ability to move quickly and be able to finesse in confined areas and avoid kicking corals or other objects. Silly marketing name (Smoke on the Water), but these Atomic fins are perfect. It is effortless to use them, no foot or calf strain. Lots of power to swim against currents and great on reefs where I need to just minutely move to look at a tiny fish. LOVE them and I am a hard sell. The other benefit is that they are not as heavy as my Biofins, which is a plus in todays reduction of baggage weight allowances for air travel. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these fins.

The fastest fin I have ever used. The split fin allows for the calf muscle to be relaxed and remain comfortable unlike Tech-fins.

Questions and Answers for Atomic Smoke on the Water Adjustable Spring Strap Split Fins:

  • Edward:

I am a size 12 mens however because of the way fins and boots loosen up while diving I where a size 11 boot . What size find would I need

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

That is difficult to say from your information. Typically the manufacturer states that fins should be purchased using a normal sneaker-style shoe size taking into account that the fins are made to accept the boots and that is factored into their sizing already. I think I''d personally lean toward the 12/13 size

  • SJ:

I am 1 step away from ordering the Atomic Smoke on the Water fins. However, I am not sure of the size I have to order them in and I do not want to make any mistakes as I cannot afford to send them back. I am male and wear US size 6 and a half or European 39 shoes. Please help!

    Greg  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Something about your sizing does not add up. An EU Men’s 39 is an US size 8 ½ - 9, which would be a large. If your size is 39, get the Atomic Smoke on the water fins in size Large.

  • Robert:

How much do the Atomic Smoke Find Weigh dry?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Robert, these fins weight are 4.4lbs.

  • Scott:

this fin has a size 13 if i have a sizw 14 mens boot will the fit be ok?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Generally the sizing of the fins goes in conjunction with the normal shoe/boot size. Unless you are using a very thin boot, chances are the fin will be too small.

  • PT:

Im right on the border of SM vs. MED (womens size 7.5-8). Do these run slightly small or slightly large?

    Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

    you want the mediums.

  • David:

Do the Oceanpro 6.5mm neo classic size 10 fit in size 9-11 or do I have to go bigger?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello David, no that would be the correct size in the fins that you want to order.

  • Victor:

How long are these fins in size 13 mens. want to make sure fit in my travel dive bag. Thanks

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Victor, the total length of the fins will be 26".

  • marcial:

i am confused about the sizing? is the 3-5 mens means size 3 to 5 in US??

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

It is adult, men''s shoe size 3 through 5 using US sizing.

  • Peter:

I seen two different people with the same shoe size as me 11.5us. Ask what size fin and boot they should get and got two different answers im just wondering what would be the perfect fit in fin and boot for a 11.5 shoe size and second question is what would be a good mm size boot for this fin thanks

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Peter, the size I would suggest for you is the 9-11 unless you have a boot that has a hard sole then go with the size 12-13 since the hard sole takes up more space in the foot pocket. Also the thickness of the boot doesn''t matter. It all depends on what the water temp is going to be.

  • Gary:

Are these fins buoyant or neutrally buoyant?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Gary, if you put things fins in the water they will sink.

  • Mario:

Can I purchase only one fin ?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Mario, no these are sold as a pair.

  • walter:

I wear a size 12 very wide with a thin XL sock. Does this fin run wide ? I dive in the Bahamas exclusicely

    Aaron  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hi Walter, This fin is designed with wearing a boot in mind.

  • Eric:

I wear a size 11 & 1/2 what size fin and boot should I purchase?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Eric, you would want the size 12-13 in the fin and you would need a size 12 boot.

  • Laura:

Im a womens 9.5 shoe size. Do you think this fin in a medium size will be better than a large?? Im thinking medium.... Do you agree? Thanks!

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Depending upon the type of boot you wear, a medium should work fine. You may need to move up a size if you wear a thick neoprene, hard sole boot.

  • Sue:

I am a 5 158lb. Woman & need to replace my old scuba fins since we will be diving the Coral Sea in December. Are these fins suitable or do u have better suggestions. Have not had to deal with currents except drift diving for years so want something more powerful for the conditions we expect. Thanks.

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Sue, if your going to be doing alot of drift diving I would suggest the

  • Linda:

Greg, I wear an ladies size 8 and a 39 European size. I agree with what SJ he wrote..My problem is that every time I order a medium fin it is too big. Thats with a good boo on. It appears that with these atomic fins, a medium may be correct and fit. Do you agree?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Linda, if you wear a size 8 women''s you would need to order the size medium. if you went up a size they would be to big and going down a size they would be to small.

  • Div:

How big is the difference between the regular Atomic split fins, and the stiffer/lighter snoke/red split fins? Also, which size would you recommend for mens boot size 11.5US?

    Aaron  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hi Div, Atomic has two types of split fin, soft blades will kick easier than a longer, stiffer one, but will require many more kicks to travel the same distance. A blade that is too stiff will require too much effort to kick comfortably. The Atomic SplitFins were specifically designed to optimize all these variables. We would recommend the large size.

  • mike:

my foot size is 10ee wide what size fin should i get

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Mike, the size 9-11 would work for you unless you wear a hard sole boot. If you do have that style sole I would got up to the 12-13 size.

  • Ledean:

I have a pair of these fins and love them but they have started to rip in the place you put your foot, can they be repaired? If not can you just purchase the fins and not the straps?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Ledean, that you would need to send to the manufacture for service. They might be able to fix your fin. Also they do not sell the fins as pieces the strap come with the fins.

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Ledean, that you would need to send back to the manufacture for repair. They might be able to fit or replace that part of the fin but they do not sell just the fin.

  • Nick:

Hi, i have a pair of fins that are USA 8-10 men. The Atomic Smoke on the water come in 6-8 or 9-11 which size do i order

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Nick, if you wear a size 8 boot go with the size 6-8 If you boot is higher than a size 8 you would want the size 9-11.

  • Scott:

Size 8 US, what size do you recommend for me.

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Scott, you would be a size 6-8 men.

How Atomic Aquatics SplitFins Work

SplitFin Wings “Slice” Through the Water
Traditional paddle fins work by pushing water rearward. As a paddle fin is pushed through the water, much of the water spills over the top surface of the blade and sticks to it, creating drag. Extra kicking effort is required to overcome that drag. The Atomic SplitFin slices through the water with two wing-shaped surfaces, creating lift and forward propulsion more like a propeller. Any water traveling over the top of the blade is funneled into and out of the opening (split) between the wings. Drag is reduced, effort is reduced, and efficiency is increased.
Propeller-Fin™ Technology Moves You Faster
Atomic Aquatics SplitFins use Propeller-Fin Technology to deliver ultra-high speeds with a small-range rapid flutter kick. This works in the same manner that increasing the RPM on a boat propeller accelerates a boat to high speeds.

Multi-Composite Plastics And Other Uniquely Atomic Features
The Atomic signature is our use of exotic materials specifically designed to improve performance. We developed multi-composite plastics for the SplitFins to maximize the efficiency of the kick with less fatigue. Flexible side rails and a stiff foot pocket are combined with stiff battens in the blade to control the flex pattern for optimum performance. Our patented EZ-LOK Buckle System is one of those distinct Atomic features that make divers love us even more.
