Since switching from a console set up, I now just use a single SPG and wrist dive computers. The Sherwood Retractable Compass helps me streamline my equipment. The retractor is sturdy and well built and the white dial on the compass face is much easier to see.

This is a decent retractable compass that serves its purpose well. I like the length of the extension cord that comes with it, and it has all of the basic functions that you would expect from a retractable compass these days.

What a great product- the retractible feature keeps it snug against my BCD and out of the way till I needed it. The slated face was easy to read and use. A must have, especially for the price

Questions and Answers for Sherwood Retractable Compass:

  • Michael:

I have this compass but need an additional clip and stainless ring. Can I get this from you? The goal is to switch this from BC to something else when needed (using the male/female clips).

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Check in the Clips Section, there are many different types that might work. http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-98/Clips-and-Reels-Clips.html

  • Todd:

Does this compass actually have a luminescent face to be used for night diving? The one they sell on amazon sells for $77 and they say it does not so is this a different compass?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Todd, yes if you put a light on the dial and then remove the light it will make the dial glow in the dark. So you can see the dial at night.

  • arturo:

could you tell me the dimensions and if it will work in the caribean

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Unfortunately the dimensions aren''t listed by the manufacturer. It is a standard sized retractable compass similar in size to just about all of them on the market. I will function in any ocean in the world. Most scuba diving navigation isn''t done using true north or south, but rather by taking readings and headings at the beginning of a dive and using reciprocal headings to return. Based on this use, it will work pretty much anyplace.

  • arturo:

    southern hemisphere or northern hemisphere?????????

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Unless specifically marked in the title or description as a Southern Hemisphere compass, all compasses on our site will be Northern Hemisphere units.

  • Maureen:

Can the module be taken out of the retractable mount, and then mounted in a wrist module? I am concerned I wont like the retractor. Or, is it somehow affixed to the retractor and cant be removed? Would you need a tool to remove it?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Maureen, yes if you wanted to take out the compass and wear it on your wrist you would also need to order this wrist mount: http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-67/016004/Oceanic-Wrist-Boot-For-XR-Compass.html. You would be able to mount that compass in this wrist unit.

This retractable compass is a must-have for every diver. Diving with a properly functioning compass is just as important as diving with a gauge and computer console. The Sherwood compass is liquid filled, features a top and side reading and gun-sight accurate navigation. To attach to your BC, you can choose from a plastic snap clip or a stainless steel split key ring. The retracting cable allows for easy use at desired length and then automatically retracts so it does not get in the way. This compass has a ratchet bezel with compass headings in 30 degree numbered increments and indicator marks for every 10 degrees. The bezel has twin-heading indicators for alignment and a lubber line across the face of the compass. The compass card is luminescent for low-light conditions.
