Larger then most safety sausages but this one does everything. It comes with all the bells and whistles. It really stands out on the surface and works as a small lift bag. Too large to fit in most BC pockets but it is worth bringing along on drift dives or for use in small recoverys. If it was half orange and half yellow it would be perfect. KC

Rating: Great SMB
Reviewer: Eric W.
Excellent SMB, larger both in length and circumference than most SMBs. The one way opening at the bottom makes filling it at depth quite easy. Just be aware that you will have to put a little more air into it than with a smaller SMB, therefore it will pull you up fast if you are not good at this skill. My one complaint is that it gets a lot of water inside when filled from an octo, and there is no easy way to get the water out. You have to fold the partially inflated SMB with the valve at the low point, then squeeze the water and air out. A release valve at the very tip would make this easier.

I really like this SMB. It is big!!! it will double as a 50 pound lift bag. It has the anti spill valve at the bottom so you can fill it with your octopus. you can also orally inflate it. It also has a dump valve at the top to dump air as you lift stuff. I would order it with the case you can clip to your BC unless you have a huge pocket you can put it in. It takes up almost as much space as a mask box. If you want a large multi-purpouse SMB this is it!

Hi. I wonder why a relieve valve is located at the upper part? In the photo on scuba.com, the valve is at the lower part.

This SMD is huge - 9" diameter and 7 tall! It doubles as a 25 lb lift bag. As such, you WILL be seen when you deploy it. I found it easy to use, but it needs way more air than one can fill by mouth. Dont plan on using the mouth inflate for anything more than pumping it up at the surface. I also found it easy to deflate, and roll up against a raised thigh, at the surface. It is well constructed and as long as you treat it well (dont "throw it in the back of the truck with the heavy stuff), itll stand the test of time. Con - rolled up, it is a little bigger than usual. I find it well worth its extra capabilities, but some may balk at the bulk.

I would like you to know that I am completely dissatisfied with your speed of service. It has taken you 7 days to ship this product. I will not be using your company again. I am leaving the country without the product I ordered due to your inefficiency and will now have to ship it abroad. Paul Sweet

Rating: Shes a big one

Bigger isnt always better, this thing is huge. Even rolled up with the convenient clip its not something youll want on your BCD every time. Its well made, easy to see from a very long distance, and doubles as a lift bag. A nice addition to my inventory of equipment.

Although I havent personally needed to use my SMB, I know plenty of divers that have. All I know is that I never want to be in a position where I wish I had it and didnt!

Questions and Answers for XS Scuba Surface Marker Buoy.(SMB):

  • ting:

HI, for the one-way oral inflation valve - is it one of those that allows the BC inflator to plug-in as well ? or is it those that just allows purely oral inflation (similar to the ones on air craft life jackets) ?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Ting, it does have the BC inflator attachment also. It also has a one-way valve in the bottom that you can also use your octo to fill it. If you would like to place an order or have any other questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822.

  • Jody:

What is the part number for the case for this item? I read a review that suggested a purchase of the case as well since it folds up pretty large and may not fit into a BC pocket. Thanks!

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

For storage you could use a mask box, but that would not work for underwater. Possibly a mask bag. http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-111/018545/Scuba-Dive-Mask-Bag-with-Defog.html

  • Eric:

Hi! This is the first time Ive used a SMB and have two questions. 1) I partially filled and released it from 20. It took off like a rocket before I could get much air in it. Kinda just laid there on the surface only about 1/4 full. How much should I fill it at depth, and how do I control my buoyancy while inflating it? 2) It filled with about a quart of water. Is that normal? I cant figure out how to drain the water. (I filled it from the bottom with my octo) Thanks! Eric

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Eric, the valve at the bottom of the SMB is also an over pressure relief valve also so you can not put to much air in it. Also to drain the water you are going to use the deflate valve.

  • MAI:

I bought this product and the pressure relief valve is located toward the top of the SMB, not as shown on the websites picture which is located near the bottom. Please explain the reason(s) for the difference. XSSCUBA website also show their product image with the relief valve at the bottom of the SMB.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

It appears they have changed the SMB as the OPV is located on the top. You can send the item back for a refund if it does not meet your needs.
