Rating: Nice Suit, but I cant deal with back zip!
Reviewer: George Smith  -  View all my reviews
This is a nice suit. Very well made. The neoprene, particularly on the legs, is well-formed for a persons anatomy. It is also extremely flexible for such thickness. Price is right, too. However, with the the inherent stiffness of a suit like this, I find it very uncomfortable unless stripped to the waist - even in the diving position, with the suit fully zipped, I find it very tight around my neck - almost to the point of choking. Perhaps it is just a question of individual fit. I ordered this suit, as the picture on-line was of a front-zip suit. After some research, I found out this is the way Mares makes them for the European market, but in North America, they come only back zip. Moreover, Mares seems to have a very nice two-piece "Farmer John" style suit with a front zip on the jacket, but this too is unavailable in North America. Not sure why, because I know the back zips take in less water, and are therefore more comfortable, but in may case, ease of entry and comfort on the boat are more important considerations. Hope this helps.

Rating: Mares 8/6/5mm Flexa Ultrastretch Wetsuit
Reviewer: Gary Lyons
The name pretty well says it all. Thick core sections for warmth where its needed but still with great flexibility. Easily as flexible as my 3mm but a lot warmer! The snug cuffs make it really a semidry.

This wetsuit, is awesome! Super flexible, and can keep you warm the entire dive. I highly recommend this wetsuit, specially, if you are diving in the cold waters of NE.

Questions and Answers for Mares 8/6/5mm Flexa Ultrastretch Wetsuit:

  • Norris:

I need a different 7mm wetsuit. Cant decide between the Henderson Aqualock or the Mares. Im thinking Mares. What is the difference in your opinion?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Both are wetsuits made using the newer blends of super-stretch neoprene and both are of very good quality. It comes down to a personal preference and fit. Use the sizing chart keeping mind to look at waist and chest measurements as the two most important measurements, then height as a secondary measurement. Use weight only to tip the scales one way or another between sizes. After that pick the suit with the best fit for your body.

  • Julio:

Is this the new model front zipper?

    Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

This is a front zip entry suit.

  • Lauron:

    I am 64" 200lbs what size would I need?

    Chance  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

The best way to determine size would be your waist and chest measurements. Use the sizing chart. If you are in between two sizes, then use your height and weight to tip the scales.
