The year was 1955, just three years after Jacques Cousteau’s book, Silent World, introduced an eager public to the wonders of scuba diving. The idea of unrestricted movement underwater was as new and thrilling as space travel. Scuba diving, however, was still in its infancy, very much an extreme sport practiced by a handful of adventuring pioneers.
Sherwood had already been in business for more than 30 years, designing and manufacturing compressed gas and air management equipment for use in medical and industrial devices. By the mid-1950s Sherwood had earned a reputation for robust engineering and precise manufacturing, two qualities essential to making reliable life support equipment.
So, Sherwood was a natural choice to produce components for these early personal air regulators designed and built for use underwater. Through the 1950s and 1960s Sherwood parts went into almost every regulator on the market. Manufacturers staked their reputations – and divers staked their lives – on the dependability of Sherwood components. And, as scuba diving grew in popularity, Sherwood grew.
In 1972 Sherwood introduced the SRB-2000: the first complete regulator to be sold under its own brand name. The behind-the-scenes engineering and manufacturing powerhouse had entered the spotlight, and it never left.
Today, the Sherwood brand has expanded into a full line of dive equipment and products, each continuing the long tradition of utter simplicity and absolute reliability. Sherwood regulatorsuse innovative technologies like diver-controlled venturi devices to reduce breathing resistance, and environmentally sealed spring chambers that limit corrosion and contamination. Sherwood dive computers come with Deep Stop Reminders and even Dive Simulators that allow you to walk yourself through a dive. Sherwood aluminum tanks come in multiple sizes, from 6 cubic foot pony bottles all the way to 100 cubic foot full dive cylinders.
For 50 years now divers around the world have counted on Sherwood equipment for dependable performance in all conditions, and this trust is something we’ll keep earning, dive after dive, for the next 50 years and beyond.
