The year was 1955, just three years after Jacques Cousteau’s book, Silent World, introduced an eager public to the wonders of scuba diving. The idea of unrestricted movement underwater was as new and thrilling as space travel. Scuba diving, however, was still in its infancy, very much an extreme sport practiced by a handful of adventuring pioneers.

Sherwood had already been in business for more than 30 years, designing and manufacturing compressed gas and air management equipment for use in medical and industrial devices. By the mid-1950s Sherwood had earned a reputation for robust engineering and precise manufacturing, two qualities essential to making reliable life support equipment.

So, Sherwood was a natural choice to produce components for these early personal air regulators designed and built for use underwater. Through the 1950s and 1960s Sherwood parts went into almost every regulator on the market.
