XS Scuba Pony Pac Harness Review - Scuba Gear Reviews

By PeterW

We dive for work so this has been a great addition to our equipment lineup, just the right thing for those quick dives to do a simple inspection or small repair. It is extremely well made, heavy duty materials & straps, but feels like nothing on your back getting in & out of the water. No need to get out the big tank or setup the hookah & compressor. Also its a fun setup on a day off to show a kid or friend the basics.

Very functional

Prompt delivery in good condition.

Great device for the boat, beach dives, swimming pool maintenance, or ocean kayaking, the XS Scuba's PonyPac Harness is one versatile harness. You're out boating and the anchor gets snagged, just roll over the side with this lightweight and easy to handle PonyPac and un-snag you're anchor. Want to do a short beach dive without all that extra weight of a large cylinder, work on the drain, pool light, or filter outlet in the pool, or maybe you see something interesting on the bottom while out on your ocean kayak, whatever it maybe when you need a lightweight easy to use cylinder harness the PonyPac is what you are looking for.

The PonyPac is a comfortable harness design to carry a pony cylinder. It fits 13 to 40 cu. ft. cylinders with diameters of 4" to 5.4" (10.16cm to 13.7cm). Harness is equipped with two-way adjustable sternum strap, dual-cam strap attachment, neoprene neck collar, back pad for added comfort, and has two trim weight pockets that hold up to 5 lbs. (2.27 kg) each. Adjusting the harness is made easy with the torso adjustable shoulder straps equipped with squeeze-style" side release buckles and the hook and loop waist strap closure. If you want to change the PonyPac into a Travel BCD see SKU: XSSCB XS Scuba Companion 30 lbs. (13.6 kg) Bladder.

Questions about this item:

InfoRule /  What size XS Scuba Pony pac should be ordered if normal pant waist size is 42-44 inch?
ALBERTO G  I would say XL or XXL I'm a 32-34 and use an L
EUGENE H  XL
JARED H  I have around a 40" Waist and ordered the regular. It feels like it may be at the end of it's size range for me. It's Ok, but if I was any bigger, I may want the next size up.
YAN G  Regular.
InfoRule /  Thank you for the info. You show them currently "out of stock". I've gone on your waiting list to be notified when available. sw
ARRICK C  can any standard bladder be attached to this?
MYLES M  No
SAYAN M  Most likely not. The harness and the bladder have specific attachment points that may not be the same for another bladder by a different company. Please experiment before purchase.
MARK L  No - this is basically just a harness to hold your tank - I use it when I am cleaning my boat. I would not recommend for dives where you need buoyancy compensation
JIM R  I already have the xs scuba pony pac harness with a zeagle 44 lb lift bladder. I want to integrate my xs scuba brand slip on weight pockets... would it be ok to put them on the bottom of the shoulder straps or the cumberbund ? my goal is to no longer wear an awkward weight belt.
MILT R  Hi Jim - My experience with the PonyPac and back inflate bladder is it tends to push me over forward at the surface. I counterbalance some of this tendancy out with weight distribution rearward. If you don't spend much time on the surface or have not felt the same forward push in your own expereince, then your plan to locate weights on straps/cumberbund will probably work OK. In my own expereince I would recommend against it. Milt
JIM R  Thanks for your prompt reply. My suspicions exactly...
Shopper  Can this product be retrofitted to fit a standard tank? If so, what would be needed?
SAYAN M  The PonyPac Harness comes with a short strap for holding narrow diameter pony tanks. In anticipation for using a larger tank I have replaced the short strap with a regular, longer strap. The back of this harness has a cylindrically curved friction pad that would accommodate a larger tank. So, the harness appears compatible with a larger tank. However, I haven't tried carrying the heavier, larger tank yet. My only concern is that its shoulder straps are not designed to carry so much weight. So, I would recommend taking the tank close to the water, and connect them together with the least amount of time carrying it around outside of water. Better still, attach the tank, carry the whole assembly while holding the tank, enter water, wear the harness with the tank floating. After this experiment, it would be clear if the shoulder straps dig into your body or if it is comfortable to keep the large tank attached outside of water.
FIGUEROA, J  Great PonyPac harness. Yet it's name says it all, the shoulder straps including the cumberbund (waist) were probably designed to support the maximum weight of a 40 cu.ft. Tank. Attempting to retrofit it to fit a tank double it's size would probably ruin it.
BROOKS M  Yes, I used it with an Alu-80. I replaced the tank cam strap with one for a larger tank. I like the DiveRite, it has a metal cam and is very well made. I also used soft weights in the pockets, I was diving in the Caribbean and I only needed a few pounds, it was perfect. Very simple and very comfortable. I was on a sail boat and didn't want more than I needed. The pony pack, my regulator, fins and a mask. Very Hogarthian, yes I dive with Bill all the time.
BRIAN F  Awesome quality....my brother-in-law Loves his...returned mine as wrong size. Buy with confidence ! Brian
LEANNE L  yes, it can accomodate a full size tank if you get different straps(the ones that go around the tank, the ones it comes with are too short). I did it with mine, but I don't recall exactly which straps I used for replacements - if it was specific to this product or just a generic standard replacement strap.
EMILY H  Possibly, but you would definitely need to buy longer straps with which to attach the tank. The ones that it comes with are pretty short.
PAUL K  Yes - you can buy tank straps that will accommodate a standard tank as an add-on if you buy the BC with pony tank straps. I have both and switch them out depending on which set-up I will use.
Shopper  What is the max tank diameter this harness can accommodate?
LeisurePro S  This fits a max tank diameter of approx. 5.5".
