Been diving this reel for a while-- has never let me down.

Great Reel, Great Value

By JOE N.

 -  Phoenix, AZ, US

This is a great value. Very easy to use with three spooling positions: fully locked, drag and free wheel. I had no issues unspooling or rewinding the line. Great product especially for the price.

These Highland by XS Scuba Reels are well thought out engineered and designed reels. To start they are manufactured with a complete stainless-steel frame and hardware making them corrosion resistant. Injection molded Delrin spool for smooth operation with high visibility 16-strand #24 yellow nylon line for ease-of-locating the line once it has been paid-out. Line has a breaking strength of 123.5-130 lbs. (56-59 kg). The reel has a three-position switch; skip / free / stop. Reel has a Delrin reel handle with attachment hole which is designed for rapped-reeling.

Reel's come equipped with a quality 4" (10.2cm) stainless-steel double-ended spring-loaded bolt snap, and a quality 2.75" (7cm) stainless-steel bolt snap to attach the reel to your equipment or lines. Both clips are equipped with 18-8 SS internal springs. The reel is available with two-line lengths of 150' and 290' (45.72m and 88.4m) All this makes for one great, durable and long-lasting reel.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Where is this made?
Larry K  No idea; the quality is high and comparable to other much more expensive reels.
KEITH L  The handle says " Made in Taiwan".
Shopper  how much line does this come with ?
Kyle T  Is it good for spearfishing
TIMOTHY S  When you go to buy it you have to "select size" with a length of either 150 feet or 290 feet.
DOUGLAS H  150 feet
Shopper  Can the Handle be remove?
ROBERT A  Yes.
VAUGHN P  Yes, it is attached to a bracket by a nut and bolt or two. Can't remember exactly how. I had to remove the handle for my application, so I am certain.
ROBERT E  this is not a finger spool, this is a heavy duty tool.
BRAD K  Yes. The handle is held on by two bolts. The clip on the reel is attached with the same two bolts so you could remove the handle and/or the back clip.
DARREN P  Yes, the handle can be removed. The handle is attached with two phillips head screws and two lock nuts.
TIMOTHY S  Yes you can. 2 phillips head screws holding it on
RON L  The handle is attached to the reel with 2ea. screws and self -locking nuts with the proper tools it could be easily removed
ROBERT B  No...plus not worth the buy. I brought a more expensive reel that works better.
RICHARD C  Yes - you'll need a Phillips head screw driver and a small crescent wrench to remove 2 screws/nuts
BRIAN D  The handle is permanently attached and can't easily be removed
TYLER R  Could this reel be used to tow a dive flag instead of those line holders?
JOHN C  I bought it to hook on and tow our flag and float. It works geat and I love it.Jack C
JANET A  This is more for a guidance line as in exploring a wreck. It is a bit thin and not as easy to manipulate as a thicker flag line on a flag line holder. With the flag you loop off a few feet of line then put a few back on as you go up and down. With this reel, we wind it out and then all the way back in on the return.
Larry K  Yes, easily so.
BRIAN T  yes that is what i use mine for. thanks
PAUL M  This is a top quality reel that I've used on wreck dives many times and I don't see any reason why this reel could not be used to tow a dive flag. It has a skip setting which would work great because as you descend the reel will let out line gradually without birds nesting. Hope this helps. Paul.
FRANK D  Yes. It has a locking mechanism. I use it for lift bags and it holds me at safety stops so I do not see an issue.
RON L  I am sure you could could use the Highland XS Scuba Reel for many things, towing a diver down flag being one: I enjoy this reel every time it is used on a dive.
BRAD K  Yes. This is exactly what I use to tow my dive flag. I find it easier and more compact than the plastic line holders. It makes for a great line to attach your scallop bag to with the flag so that it can be hauled to the surface when you are finished..
ROBERT W  Sure
TIMOTHY S  I think that it would work fine... I use it for towing a safety sausage now and then. It's a great reel.
JUSTIN F  What is the size of this product? Is it bulky?
STACEY P  Its not bulky at all, fits in your hand. Its a great reel, easy to hold on to
RON L  This Reel is bigger than a finger reel, spread your fingers it is as big as your hand and is 2 inches deep.
DAN T  The real is 6 1/4 inches from the bottom of the reel to the top of the handle, and 5 inches front to back. I love this reel, it has a ratchet, lock and free spin options. It also has enough room between the reel and handle if you had to wear gloves. I just wish I had bought this in a bigger size.
Larry K  I liked the quality and finish, but returned it for the smaller: Aluminum Reel with Tension & Locking system (blue frame) Approx. the same price. Lars
BRIAN D  The reel itself is approximately 4" in diameter 2" wide, the handle sticks out a bit more. Overall the dimensions are reasonable, it is not massive. I clip mine to a lower D ring on the shoulder strap of the harness of my BCD near the waist belt, making it assessable but streamlined. The swivel clip allows the reel to move freely and I don't notice it at all once it is on. I use it for low vis diving and to send up my SMB. The locking mechanism does not allow single handed operation in my experience but is simple enough to use. The build quality is very good and it is a great value for the money.
KEN B  the 290' is about the size of my hand(4x6) and maybe two inches wide.fits in my bc if needed or attached. no problems.
ROBERT A  Depends on what you consider bulky. The handle adds some size to it, but it has never gotten in my way diving, normally clipped to my BC when not in use. I used this during my Cavern Diver certification and it proved to be a very good reel. I highly recommend it!
JENNIFER H  I would say it is good sized but easy to handle while diving.. When clipped on your lower BCD D-rings it does not get in the way. The reel part itself is about 3 inches in diameter. From the edge of the reel to the handle is about inch and a half. handle fots in your hand great and the clicking feature really helps prevent a free spool.
