Great steel tank functionality and look; packing issue solved

By David G.

 -  Orlando, FL, US

A previous reviewer commented on the detached valve knocking a hole in the finish during shipping. That problem has been eliminated; tank arrived today with the valve in a separate interior box, and the valve-in-the-box was isolated in larger box, on the other side of the rubber tank boot from the tank itself.

HP 100, Excellent tank, improved packaging, 09/2017

By KENT A.

 -  Napa, CA, US

Just got my XS Scuba/Faber HP 100 steel tank delivered by UPS Ground. 41.7 lbs and free shipping. Arrived in 7 days from NJ to CA. Tank, boot, and valve all arrived in new & undamaged condition. Tank was sent with the boot stuffed with shipping paper and placed on the valve end of the tank to protect the neck. Tank/boot placed in a plastic bag to protect the paint finish from the box. Boot/neck end placed in a "36 inch cylinder" double layer corrugated shipping box first, then a layer ...

If you are not using steel cylinders, try to use one and you will soon realize what you have been missing. Faber can offer you the most comprehensive range of cylinders for scuba diving. No other manufacturer in the world can match their capabilities and the breadth of their range. Faber Tanks and XS valves are nitrox ready.

Cylinders come equipped with a Pro valve that easily converts back and forth depending on the type of first stage regulator to be used in conjunction with the cylinder increasing the versatility of the tank. The construction allows the diver to remove lead weight from their weight belt or integrated weight system of the BCD, allowing the diver to better distribute weight by moving it to the rear of the BCD a great advantage when wearing a back-inflation style (Wing) BCD.

Aluminum cylinders, as we breathe the weight of air from them, create positive buoyancy at or near the end of a dive. The steel cylinder with its negative buoyancy throughout the dive allows you to shed the excess lead that is required to keep you properly trimmed while you dive an aluminum cylinder. Faber HP cylinders have a round bottom and come equipped with a cylinder boot.

The Faber cylinders are 3442 psi (237 bar) working pressure cylinders, are negatively buoyant from -8.05 lbs. to -9.08 lbs. (-3.65 kg to -4.11 kg) when full and buoyant characteristics from -1.74 lbs. to +1.45 lbs. (-0.79 kg to +0.66 kg) when empty. Cylinders are made from triple protected zinc sprayed and epoxy and polyurethane painted deep drawn chromium molybdenum steel. Cylinder has standard 3/4"-14 NPSM inlet threads. When shipped the tanks valves is not threaded to the cylinder, so the tank will require a visual inspection before being filled Note: All Faber cylinders meet certificated specifications of the US Department of Transportation (DOT) with DOT special permit number 13488 and Transport Canada (TC) with special permit number SU7694-237.

XS Scuba's valves are designed and manufactured for long life and heavy use. The Thermo DIN/Yoke Pro 3442 psi (230 bars) is no exception. Valve is made of marine grade brass with triple bright chrome plating for long life protection in salt water. Precision machined from high tension brass and chrome plated valve stems for years of service and corrosion free operation. Valve is factory cleaned for pre-blended Nitrox up to 40% FO2. All O-rings are Viton and EPDM material and are lubricated with Christo-Lube MGC-111 lubricant. The high-pressure seat is nylon assuring the diver safe use with Nitrox.

Easy grip soft rubber hand wheel with stainless steel insert ensures long life and large ribs make turning handle easy even when wearing gloves. Valve bonnets are copper crush washer sealed. Standard yoke outlet with 1/4" hex spin-out adapter converts to 230 bar DIN outlet, Service pressures: 3442 (230 bar). Valve is equipped with a one-piece safety plug, has a 5/32" hex wrench dip tube for positive retention and 3/4" x 14 NPSM inlet threads which fit nearly all DOT aluminum and modern steel cylinders. All this and more makes this the valve of choice for the serious diver.

This product can only be shipped to U.S. and Canada addresses.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Do I have any color options for the steel HP cylinders ?
GENEROSA L  None that I know of.
ARTHUR W  gun metal grey. Underwater it looks dark grey. At 100 feet it looks black.
Jose L  No color option when I purchase mine. They were only available in a light green.
MARK C  No options on this one. It comes in a gloss grey only.
JIM T  what can I expect for a hydro date?
MARCOS S  As all tanks you will get 5 years. Is a standard 5 years Hidro.
Vern S  5 years
HARALD M  I've purchased 4 new tanks from LP (2x100,2x80) - all were stamped within a year of purchase.
Shopper  how long does it last?
DAVID B  If you're asking this question, I assume that you're a new diver. Rent cylinders for the first 25 dives. Try different sizes. Ask the guys you dive with what they use. I have 117's. I get between 45 and 80 minutes depending on how many atmospheres deep I go. I wish I'd gotten 100cf sweet. With the 117's I always have about 1000 psi at the end of the dive as my buddy is at 500. BTW the math works out.
ARTHUR W  if you are asking how long the air lasts, it depends on your SAC, which is dependent on skills, comfortability, environments, etc. If you breath heavy, it won't last as long. For me, I can run about 45 minutes at 60 FSW with the 119CF tank. The tank itself is very rugged and I imagine will last longer than any of us.
Shopper  Is the tank valve Scuba Yoke or Din?
DAVID B  Convertible valve. Both yoke a d din. But of course that makes it the 6 thread not the 8.
DEAN R  It's both- It's a DIN valve that comes with a Yoke insert, so you can use either.
DAVID G  It's a "Pro" valve that can be used with either DIN or Yoke (with the included insert).
PETE M  It's both- It's a DIN valve that comes with a Yoke insert, so you can use either. I believe all newer steel tanks are like this. Older 3500 PSI steel tanks can't take a yoke insert.
John S  Are these particular tanks galvanized?
john h  Have used this tank for the last four years. The tank holds more PSI because of high pressure. But what I like most is it six inches shorter than a Aluminium tank so it does ride your lower back. John
DEAN R  Painted only. Galvanized cost more. I use the mesh tank protectors to keep the paint from getting damaged.
ARTHUR W  I cannot tell if they are galvanized. They may be powder coated. It does have a nice gray enamel of some sort applied to it. Very durable coating. Had mine for well over 2 years and no chips or rust..
MARK C  Yes they are.
WILLIAM P  No, these are painted a charcoal gray.
