Same strobe, different control knobs

By SCOTT E.

 -  Saipan, Saipan, MP

The predecessor to this strobe I thought had better markings on the controls. They were easier to see. This one is a little more cluttered, because of the style of pointer they used for the strobe strength. That being said, I usually donâ??t go for exact # reference when shooting, so itâ??s still a 1 or 2 click adjustment from the previous shot. But all in all it is a solid strobe and at an affordable price.

The YS-D2 sets a new standard for underwater strobes. The SEA&SEA YS-D2 Strobe offers exclusive features like no other strobe in the world. Keeping with the same great performance specs as the YS-D1, the YS-D2 has added Audible Confirmation providing TTL confirmation and ready light confirmation. The YS-D2 also features a rear glowing panel with easy to read controls: Ready/TTL-Fully Charged. The YS-D2 also features dual powered target light with red filter, wing nut style fixing bolt, new control knobs and a newly designed battery compartment.

From subtle light output as low as guide number 1 to a maximum power of guide number 32, control of underwater lighting has become effortless with the YS-D2. Revising the algorithms used for the DS-TTL system, the YS-D2 employs a totally new slave TTL system. The strobe can adjust the interval between the pre-flash and the primary flash to be compatible with a wide-variety of cameras, if not all, on the market today. The strobe is equipped with DS-TTL ll mode which is more responsive, more precise and more reliable. The DS-TTL ll enables a variety of strobe sync photography such as slave TTL and slave manual (11 steps) with compact or digital SLR cameras. When used with a digital SLR camera in housing, the strobe can also be connected with a conventional sync cord and through a YS Converter for TTL strobe photography.

The YS-D2 is the most versatile underwater strobe available today. The DS-TTL exposure compensation function enables subtle lighting control by adjusting the Light Level dial in DS-TTL mode. Powered by only four AA batteries, the YS-D2 offers a maximum light output of Guide Number 32. The YS-D2 suitable for macro photography, but also is robust enough for wide-angle photography. It is also ideal for macro photography which requires delicate light level control. The strobe's guide number can be reduced to 1. Highly versatile, the YS-D2 offers more automatic and manual control over lighting to get that perfect exposure.

The YS-D2 is the world's first slave TTL strobe equipped with an exposure compensation (EV) control function. By controlling the actual flash light level, the strobe realizes accurate exposure compensation with EV value. Regardless of a compact or a SLR camera, you can achieve any desired exposure compensation. However, many TTL systems are not reliable. The YS-D2's DS-TTL exposure compensation function allows users to adjust the light level in TTL mode (-1.5EV, -1EV, -0.7EV, -0.3EV, +0.3EV, +0.7EV, +1EV, +1.5EV). A high-visibility three-colored LED indicator lamp is easy to read even during shooting. A red LED ready lamp will be shown when the strobe has been charged and is ready to fire. A green LED will be shown for two seconds to confirm DS-TTL ll exposure. A blue LED will be shown when the strobe is set to Slave TTL mode and the strobe has been charged and is ready to fire. The YS-D2 is equipped with a function that automatically switches modes between slave and conventional sync cord or vice versa.

The YS-D2 will auto-sense when a sync cord is connected, the slave ON/OFF switch will no longer be active. Simple controls and configuration enable easy operation. The light level control ratchets/clicks to aid in setting and operation. The strobes guide number on land (ISO 100/m) is 32, 24 with diffuser 100 and 20 with diffuser 120 attached. The strobe has a beam angle of 80° x 80° (without diffuser), 100° x 100° (with diffuser 100) and 120° x 120° (with diffuser 120). The strobe can provide up to 150 flashes when powered by AA batteries with a recycle time of 2.8 seconds. When using optional Ni-MH batteries the recycle time is 1.5 seconds. The strobe has a color temperature of 5600°K and when used with a diffuser 5250°K. The YS-D2 Strobe is depth rated to 330' (200m), measures approximately (W x H x D) 3.5" x 5.4" x 4.4" (87mm x 135mm x 111mm), weighs approximately 22 oz. (623 g) without batteries and is negatively buoyant 1.4 oz. (40 g) underwater. The strobe comes with diffusers, YS mount adapter, silicone grease, ball mount adapter, fixing bolt, hex wrench, spare cap bolt and owner's manual.
