Scuba Tanks Buying Guide

The beating heart of scuba diving, you won't be going anywhere underwater without one of these.

Steel Tanks

Durable, rugged, and strong, a properly cared-for steel scuba tank can last for decades. Steel scuba tanks are denser than aluminum tanks, meaning you have to be less concerned with buoyancy issues, especially at the end of a dive. Smaller than an aluminum tank of the same capacity, a steel scuba tank is a more compact air supply solution, a fact that becomes doubly important for twin-tank setups.

Rust can be a factor over time if a steel scuba tank isn't properly cared for, so maintenance is always going to be extremely important with a steel tank.

Aluminum Tanks

Aluminum tanks are cost efficient, long lasting, and readily available, which is why they are easily the most common scuba diving tanks in the world. Lighter than steel tanks, aluminum dive tanks are easier to transport and swim with, giving your shoulders and arms a break on long treks.

Because of their light weight, some aluminum tanks will begin to float at the end of a dive, once the oxygen supply is nearly depleted. To combat this, it's common to counter-weight an aluminum dive tank with approximately 4 pounds. However, "Compact Neutral" aluminum tanks are made with thicker walls, which increase the weight and help to counteract the positive buoyancy problems at the end of a long dive.

Twin Tanks and Manifolds

Double the length of your dive with a twin-cylinder tank package, available in low and high-pressure models. Available in sizes from 80 to 130 cubic feet, you'll always be able to find the exact air supply you'll need for any task.

These tanks are made of a rugged chromium-molybdenum alloy, the same kind of light-weight, high-strength metal used in aircraft frames specifically for its high strength-to-weight ratio. With a resilient hot dipped galvanized steel finish, you never have to worry about scratching these tanks.

You'll also be able to find separate manifolds on this page as well, allowing you to gang two tanks together for maximum air supply.
