Frameless mask

By FRANK M.

 -  01606, MA, US

I had a problem with my first dive but it was just me not knowing how to allow it to sit on my face. After playing with it at home after that dive and adjusting the Straps to properly fit my hood it fits like a glove and I have to say it's an amazing mask.

AAA-mazing

Not all masks fit all faces, people that say theirs are leaking its more than likely because the mask doesn't fit their face. Not the masks fault. If it fits you, you will love it!

When you learned how to dive your instructor told you the most important part of choosing equipment was comfort and fit. When looking for a mask you also need a great field of vision well this mask was designed to meet those and more desirable qualities. Frameless masks give the diver the widest field of view in a single lens mask design. The Venom Frameless is incredibly comfortable with low-volume, hydrodynamic construction and exclusive Atomic wicked styling. Co-molded with two silicone materials in two levels of softness two different hardness silicone materials are co-molded together to form the mask skirt which is bonded directly to the glass, eliminating the need for a frame and providing maximum viewing area.

Gummi Bear ultra-soft (10 shore) silicone creates an incredibly soft yet reliable face seal. Provides an incredibly soft and accommodating face seal for all kinds of faces. New special geometry of the face seal is optimized to take full advantage of the ultra-soft silicone material. The ridged silicone skirt section is also soft but won't collapse, distort, or fold under pressure or in turbulent conditions. Keeps the skirt centered on the face for a reliable seal. And the mask features the exclusive Atomic UltraClear lens. It will change the way you think about dive masks.

The mask has a low volume profile to add to the increased field of vision. Low volume also makes mask clearing easier due to less water needing to be displaced. Mask is equipped with easy squeeze adjust buckles that are mounted behind the lens for a more hydrodynamic design. A single window like the Atomic Frameless, but it has a high bridge and tear-drop shape like the SubFrame's dual-window design. Its easy-to-use squeeze-to-adjust buckles are soft-mounted to the mask skirt, which allows flexibility in strap positioning, plus they can be folded flat for packing.

Where the Venom differs from its SubFrame and Frameless cousins is in its lens construction. While the SubFrame and Frameless lenses use ultra-clear glass, which has a reputation for optical quality in its own right, on the Venom Mask, Atomic uses an even higher-quality glass imported from Germany. What makes UltraClear special? Did you ever notice that normal dive mask lenses have a green tint to the glass? To see this tint, put your existing mask up to a piece of white paper and see for yourself. The green tint you see is the result of iron impurities left over in lower quality float or window type glass. That green tint distorts true colors and blocks out some of the light that reaches the eye. UltraClear is a new and exciting optical quality glass with exceptional clarity and high light transmission, with no color distortion. The exceptionally high light transmittance and lack of distortion in the UltraClear lens maximizes the light available for improved visual acuity, especially underwater in low light conditions. Called Schott Superwite glass, it allows more-light to penetrate than even ultra-clear glass. The imported from Germany glass is Schott Superwite UltraClear lens that allows up to 96% of available light to reach the eyes.

As with all Atomic masks the Venom has a double feathered edge silicone rubber skirt with a wide split strap design, which in combination, afford an excellent fit and seal on the face. A one-handed nose well for easy ear equalization brings the lens of the mask closer to the diver's face further increasing the field of vision. The Venom comes with a mask box for transport and storage.

Q&A

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Martien G  I've read this mask is quite wide. What's the width of the skirt at eye level?
Mario C  Skirt width at eye level is 5 inches ( inner measurement)
john b  does this mask need to be brushed with toothpaste or burned with a lighter before first dive?
MATTHEW R  I feel that keeping it from light when not in use and keeping it slightly moist keeps the seal between my face. My pair has been in storage and is about to get used daily soon I just wish it fogged less in temp change. Good luck and I love my purchase a once in a life time buy
WRIGHT J  I had a very hard time getting the film off of this mask, I had to burn it off several times (not recommended) but it was the only thing that eventually worked. I have two of theses and had to do it to both but they are the best masks I've owned otherwise.
DAVID S  Stay away from using an open flame but with diligent use of toothpaste (several applications) on both sides of mask the residue / film will be gone. This is by far the best and most comfortable mask I have owned / used. I have been diving for 25+ years and have endured leaking and uncomfortable masks but no more with the Venom!
JOE S  Use warm/hot water and dish soap to clean the glass. You may have to repeat the process more than once prior to use. Avoid abrasive anything or using a lighter on the glass
STEVEN H  Probably both. I had a tough time getting all the silicone film off. Have had many masks over the years and this was the toughest to get clean so it didn't fog up. I would think 30 minutes with a toothpaste that has a little grit in it. Great mask once you get it cleaned up.
TIMOTHY C  Yes, I had to treat it with toothpaste prior to my first dive. I have been told to stay away from using flames on my masks due to the potential wreaking of the glass. I’ve owned this mask for over a year and has been my favorite by far; it is the only mask that has maintained a seal with my beard.
Richard K  Does the nose piece have a valve in the bottom for blowing out small amounts of water in the mask?
BRIAN J  No
JOAO V  No, it does not.
TODD M  No and I personally would not buy a mask that did, it is just another failure point.
Donald P  No it does not
JEFF J  No Valve, But if you have a small face the nose/bridge will dig a dent in your face...wish I could use it but it hurts after one dive so much :-(( this mask is SO clear...
SIDNEY B  No, this mask has a nice soft seal, never had a problem with leaks, clears easily. Just make sure it’s a good fit for your face
NICHOLAS V  No it does not
RANDAL F  Is this the mask (Venom Frameless Mask) that's reviewed as having the Gummi bear type seal and the Schott Superwite™ UltraClear lens? Apparently there has been confusion on the part of sellers and even Atomic sales staff concerning the correct model of this mask, according to a July 2015 article by "ScubaGadget Editors Choice."
Joseph D  I would not describe the seal as "gummi -bear " like. It is similar to other masks only softer. As for the glass, it is similar to the glass in my other masks. It is not noticeably superior. Although I own this mask, I do not use it. I carry it as a spare. My primary mask is a low-volume mask from XS Scuba. In my opinion, the atomic venom mask is overpriced.
THOMAS W  Don't know.. I dont use these masks.
LESTER W  Hi, Randal. Yes, the Venom is also known as the "Gummi Bear". It is a good mask, primarily because of the low profile and fit. I would caution any buyer to be sure to get rid of the protective coating before diving. I had serious problems with fogging on both of my recent trips to Kona and Bonaire. The best approach seems to be "burning" the coating off the lens, as extreme as that may sound. Whatever the case, thorough scrubbing will make your underwater experience more enjoyable.
Justin O  For those of you who own this mask, and have tried or also own the standard Atomic Frameless (not venom), how do they feel/fit in comparison? I am torn between which one to order as I live out of the country and cannot try them both on side by side. Thank you for your responses.
RONNY O  I ordered both and kept the Venom. The Frameless2 has a slightly larger glass that seats a bit closer to your face, but it's not as comfortable and could hit the bridge of your nose depending on your face. The Venom is waaay more comfortable and offers virtually the same field of view. It does look and feel just a bit bulkier due to the thickness of the silicon around the glass but this is not a problem to me.
YAN G  Would be hard to say, you really need to try them on and see for yourself which one fits your face. Impossible to say unless you try them on.
