Good backplate, would recommend.

By JAMES H.

It’s a backplate, it’s stainless steel, not much to say here but the finish is above average, edges rounded, and the corners bent out for comfort, it has the Hollis “H” logo cut out of it on one side which looks good.

Excelente S/S Backplate!!!!

Just Great Product with all the possible features!:)

The Hollis Back Plate is engineered to fit closer to the cylinders preventing GAPEOSIS, creating a tighter profile and as a result reduces drag. The edges on the outside of the Hollis Stainless Steel Back Plate are radius formed to fit the Hollis BC, thereby preventing back plate chafing of the BC. The webbing that passes through the slots in the back plate must continue to function throughout the dive season without appreciable abrasion. The slots, holes and edges of the Hollis Back Plate are fully de-burred eliminating sharp edges that can cut you and your harness system. Back plate can be used with single or double cylinder set ups. The Hollis Stainless Steel Back Plate is made from 316-Grade Stainless and is Electro-Polished. Back Plate has 1" & 2" (2.5 cm & 5 cm) Slots for incorporating a crotch strap. Back plate can be used with single or double cylinder set ups. For single use proper adapter see SKU: (see SKU: HLSSTA). The back-plate weighs approximately 5.5 lbs. (2.5 kg).

This product can only be shipped to U.S. addresses.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Daniel H  in a previous question about using this plate with an HTS2 harness it was stated that this backplate could not be used with the HTS2. However, this is contrary to what Hollis states on its own website, as they argue that the system is designed for just such modifications. Can you clarify further why this backplate is incompatible with the HS2 harness? "The HTS 2 easily switches from a single tank soft pack to a dual tank backplate system. The modular capabilities of the HTS 2 may be personalized to your needs."
CRAIG T  This harness works very well with the right back plate Not all back plates will work due to bolt pattern. This may be confusing because all patterns are suppose to be standard but they are not. You will not be able to use the back pad with a plate because the Velcro is has nowhere to attach.
RAYMOND M  I was able to use the Hollis backplate with my HTS2. Worked fine with my single tank adaptor. Did need longer screws for my doubles
JOE S  The HTS2 can be modified to accommodate a backplate in order to mount double tanks. It's not as easy as just slapping a plate on it. You will have to weave some of the webbing through the slots to configure it properly. But it is designed to be used alternatively with a plate. Also note that the shoulder straps won't weave through the plate like a traditional harness and that it will not sit exactly the same. So if you are looking for the feel and performance of a backplate to be used with double tanks, then we suggest just going with the backplate and harness since that is the more appropriate tool for the job. But if you are looking for a harness that can be swapped back and forth for both BP/Doubles and recreational single tank application, then this is the system to go with.
SCOTT H  I used a SS backplate when I had the HTS2. I don’t have it anymore however.
OSAMU K  I have a “Hollis Side-Mount SMS 75 Complete”. I it possible to replace “original soft plate” with “this Stainless Steel Back Plate”? If yes, what additional parts is required?
JOE S  Yes you can remove the soft back pad and install a back plate. you would have to either attach it to a set of double tanks with the bolt kit or attach the backplate with a minimum of two metal book screws to hold it together. A single tank adapter will also work in a similar fashion to the bolt kit for double tanks. The grommets are 11" which is standard in the diving industry. Note that if you are going to try to use a backplate for the sidemount configuration, that is not the most comfortable and it is better used without a hard plate.
SEWARD P  Can this plate be used with the Hollis HTS 2 harness? It seems like the HTS with/without plate could be a nice cold/warm water setup.
KEVIN F  The backplate can be physically attached to the softplate HTS 2 system, but a hard backplate is not intended to be used with this harness system. The cam straps would still be directly attached to the softplate. There is no viable way to thread the cam straps through the backplate and the HTS 2 harness. So it would be useless for a single tank configuration. You also can't use the padded back cover if you attached a BP. You could attach the BP for use with a doubles setup, but the softplate can be used with doubles by itself.
KELVIN B  The Hollis HT2 is a semi-modular travel back plate and wing style system. Instead of having a Hard back plate, it consist of a combined soft back plate and harness system(unnecessarily complex). Short answer: looks like you cannot use this with the HT2. That being said if an ideal warm/cold water setup is what your after I would suggest an aluminum backplate which is lighter than S.S. and easier to travel with. As far as harness goes: a Hogarthian style harness is inexpenive, light, modular, simplistic and fully customizable. This will grow with you. There are other hard back plates made of S.S. and aluminum designed for travel such as the one below. However its hard not to go with the tried and true regular aluminum backplate like the one posted below.
ENRIQUE A  If this plate weights 5.5 pounds, and if I am diving on cold water with 23 pounds of lead. Do I need to subs tract the 5 pounds of lead to be 23 total weight? Thanks Enrique
SEAN C  It's not quite that simple as it depends on whether the BC you are replacing is positive or negative. For example, if your current BC is 2 lb positive, then you can actually subtract about 7 lbs from your belt switching to a stainless Backplate, but subracting the weight of the plate is a good starting point before doing a proper weight check.
ENRIQUE A  Yes SEAN that make total sense thanks brother.
CHARLES R  Yes that is one of the benefits of diving a back plates
PAUL K  If you are going from a vest style bcd to a wing and backplate tans wear is yes you can drop 5-6 pounds
HOWARD K  Yes..... but dont forget that your old BCD had a boyancy (positive or negative) that will be different from that of your TOTAL new wing. So you may still need just a bit of trimming to do after you remove 5 pounds of lead
Clery M  Will this backplate fit the Hollis ride wing travel BCD?
YAN G  No, you can not add a backplate to the Ride BCD.
