As one of the largest global NGOs focused exclusively on protecting coral reefs, CORAL has used cutting-edge science and community engagement for nearly 30 years to reduce direct threats to reefs and to promote scalable and effective solutions for their protection.
Coral reefs support an estimated 25 percent of all marine fish species and provide food, income, and storm protection for over 500 million people. Despite their value, coral reefs are one of the most threatened ecosystems on our planet. CORAL's research shows that if we keep corals healthy in strategic areas, we can create the conditions that corals need in order to adapt to the more global threats, like warming ocean temperatures.
In the Mesoamerican Region, CORAL is focused on protecting coral reefs from local threats such as overfishing and wastewater pollution. In Hawaii, CORAL ensures corals have the clean, clear water they need to survive. At the global level, CORAL advances the science behind how corals adapt to climate change and builds partnerships to implement conservation solutions that allow this natural evolutionary process to occur.
