great product...extremely well designed and very easy to use. worth every bit of the steep price tag in peace of mind. heavier straps and buckles on the holster would be a big improvement or add two ss/brass d-rings.

Rating: Safety and Spare Air
Reviewer: William Nuesse, Friday, July 29, 2011
Spare Air works just as it is advertised. It is a completely independent tank and regulator capable of supplying enough air to get to the surface without making a free ascent. But, of courese practice free ascents and use spare air. I bought the larger tank #.0 cubic feet. It attaches to your BC or other straps, It is small enough to be out of the way. The usefulness would come in when a firsy stage malfunction occurrs or when you are totally out of air. If the first stage malfunctions it will affect your octopus and your primary regulator. The bottle can be rapidly detached in the event you needed to ditch your gear.If you are cave diving youd want a larger system maybe even doubles each rigged separately. This is great for dives to about 120 feet with no required decompression stops. It breaths easy at 60 feet and is a little restricted at 100 feet. I think the price is reasonable, the tank is aluminum and the regulator and refill aperture are fixed to the tank valve. There are no hoses.

The one time I needed a spare air I didnt have it. I was running low on air and my dive partners was no where to be found on a deep wreck dive. Ive had one every since. Ive never needed it but I am much more comfortable knowing its there. Its my second spare air- lost the 1st one because I forgot to bring the leash. the 1st one was 10+ years old and it never needed anything but scheduled maintenance. I think that says it all.

Our dive club has even incorporated it into the rescue diver training!!!

Great if used as emergency air And not as additional air.
The regulator is not the greatest as it does take some effort to breath but its really not that bad its just a big contrast from my oceanic eos.
You wont find a better price on one either... In Canada these retail for 450 so its a huge savings to buy one online.

This item was shipped promptly and had everything intact upon arrival.
I have taken it with me on a few dives including a deep(75) and shallow(12)dive. Its not cumbersome and may save my life. The price was almost $100.00 less than in a local dive shop.

What I like most about this product, is that if a dive buddy is out of air and panics...you can hand this off and get away until he/she calms down. It could save you or someone else...so why not have one?

Rating: A few good more breathes
Reviewer: Adam F., Sunday, July 12, 2009 - View all my reviews
so my ssi dealer does not rate these very highly, as he says too many people rely on them in their dive. his quote "three breaths and your dead." my opinion is that is three breaths more to attract your dive buddys attention and hopefully get their assistance. if you dont treat it as an alternative air source and just as an emergency option, i think you should be ok. i filled the tank from my regular tank as you are suppose to and i saw about a 400 lb in pressure in my regular tank, which meant that i needed to get that tank topped up. the spare-air full indicator is a little pin that is flush with its enclosure when full. id prefer a gauge. i wanted to know how many breaths i would get (even at sea level). i managed to get between 60 and 70 breaths just sitting around. i know this will reduced once at depth and i intend to experiment with this (dive-buddy present and my own regular air available). i found the regulator a little harder to breath with than my usual, but for what it is: an emergency reserve, i think anything that makes my dive safer cant be bad.

This product has exceeded my expectations. The engineering and manufacture appears to be flawless. Although weve not had to use the product in an emergency, we have tested this device to about 55 feet and found that it would definately be a lifesaver in an emergency. Ive recommended the spare air to friends to dive and plan on purchasing several more in the future for my sons.

Reviewer: Robert Talley, Thursday, May 07, 2009 - View all my reviews
The product has a simple compact design and sturdy construction and is easy to carry as an emergency air supply for scuba diving, boating, or general aviation over open water. The bright yellow color makes it easier to see underwater and the air volume is enough to gain control of a surprise emergency while submerged. The one drawback is that the large purge button on top of the regulator is unprotected and can accidentally get pressed releasing some of the backup air.

I love this product! I put it on my BCD so If i need air, its right there. Its easy to see because its so bright and easy to open quickly, thanks to the D-ring on the cover, and it has a really easy demand valve so you can breathe really relaxed, it fills from any tank, One thing, make sure you purge it really good! I sucked in a bit of water on its maiden voyage. All things said Its a great piece of gear, Id reccomend it to any and all divers!

Do you really have time to swim over to your buddy for air if you are out. If your first stage regulator fails your octopus wont work. I considered a pony bottle with both a first and second stage regulator, but picked the 3.0 cf bottle because it was compact.
seems to be high quality and it works fine

Spare Air has developed a great self rescue product for recreational divers. The 3.0 cf unit is small enough that it can be mounted almost any where on your BCD or even upside down on your tank bands. The unit allows you to be independent, not needing to rely on a buddy being close by. It also allows you to provide an independent air supply to a buddy if necessary. Spare Air can also serve as an insurance policy for divers who often dive alone. I highly recommend the optional pressure gauge which allows you to check the tank pressure at a glance. Thanks again Scuba.Com for another great product.

Tested in pool several times and worked very well. Compact design is easy to carry and secure. I have confidence in this device to get me to the surface when needed. I will be testing it from time to time in everyday diving situations of course (some deep), but so far IMHO, it is a great product at a fair price. I like redundant air supply for me and my dive buddy.

Hi, I was pleased with the Spare Air Tank I recently purchased. Construction is excellent, packaging was excellent, cost was resonable. Im looking forward to trying it out. I purchased it for emergency egress from a float plane. I recently took a under water emergency egress training course and realized how short your time is once you are under water. ~30-40seconds. This tank will give me 30-40 breaths which should be enough time to get everyone out safely. Id estimate 3-5 minutes.

I have been using spare air units for nearly 20 years. I wont go in the water without it. The latest model is a good one. The fill adapter is now brass rather than aluminum so it should hold up better than the older ones. The new holster also gives more mounting options to keep it handy, yet out of the way.

i couldnt be happier with my spare air purchase. in addition to its intended purpose as a redundant air source while diving, i have used it do short work under my boat, such as change a zinc or clean the prop. my neighbor used it to retrieve the keys he ped in the water at his slip. sometimes only a little air is needed and using the spare air saves getting on all the scuba apparatus. one other use is as an air source should i need it to fight a fire aboard my boat. i hope this never happens. this is a wonderful product. i should add that delivery was quick and complete.

Reviewer: Carl McIntire, Wednesday, April 16, 2008
Im a diver in Senegal, West Africa. I often dive with local fishermen who are untrained and do not know how to be a "good buddy." My wife bought the Submersible Systems Spare Air bottle for me as a Valentines gift, knowing that it would give me an extra margin of safety on my dives.
The unit is easy to fill and easy to use. I removed the regulator/cap before taking it onto the plane in my checked luggage. I also included a note in the bag with it explaining what it was. I had no problems at any of the international airports.
Ive made about a dozen dives with the Spare Air in the last two months. I have not needed it yet, but just knowing its there gives me wonderful peace of mind.

Just bought the spare air kit and took it on a dive trip the the VIs and Bonaire. What a great security feeling. I have all the confidence with my gear and the spare air gives me that extra level of assurance. Easy to transport, easier to fill, quality construction and best of all a level of safety. With new weight regulation about to take effect with the airlines and scuba gear being considered as bagage divers will be forced to rely some what on dive shop rental gear. The "Spare Air" will provide that extra level of safety.

Very high quality product. Delivered very promptly by FedEx.
I had no problem with taking it on an international flight, but I did attach the TSA regs to the tank with an elastic.
In my experience diving with lots of different people on off shore boats, you cant count on a buddy (a new one on every dive sometimes) to always be close enough to assist, or even to have their act together, so I consider it to be my new buddy who I know is always there.

I ordered and tried this product on a recent dive and was just thrilled with it. I had tried to get it from three local dive shops and they were out. Scuba.com came to the rescue with a price even lower than the perfered divers rates I enjoy at a local shop and the unit was delivered within 16 hrs of being ordered.. Trial was by choice and not in an emergency situation of course. I had no problem attaching the spare air to my BC and with the way the case is designed it was very easy to stream line it. I also love the increased sense of security it gave to me and my wife. Therefore both of us would highly recomend this product and Scuba.com to any divers

Just wanted to let you know for future reference.

This is possibly the best idea any diver ever had. How can it possibly be a bad idea to bring a bit more air underwater. This little unit weighs close to nothing and mounts just about anywhere. This means that it is accessable and usable in seconds. In the unlikely event that a diver needed a redundant air supply, this is the way to go. It breaks down for travel, re-assembles in minutes and can be refilled over and over right from your main tank. The best news is that Ive never had to use it for real, but I know that its always there in case.
