New post today From Doug Krause Oceanic, about the Pioneer mask:

These are the posts that a marketer prays for - I just wish I had news that the mask was shipping today...

I do apologize to those that feel we have been less than responsive.

In addition to the typical product sampling and testing that we do, a number of masks were produced and sold at retail in Europe. This identified a variety of reports from the field. Without getting into the gory details, there are multiple issues, as there most always are, that we continue to identify and address throughout the product development process. I assure you, that while the frustration level for those of you that have been waiting for your mask is obviously high, you are no more frustrated than any of us.

This truly is one of the most amazing masks that I've worn - it's comfortable, it fits, packs flat - and has the best field-of-view that I've seen - but, painfully unavailable.

Here's what I do know:
- The standard version (all colors) metal frame will be a matte black finish, rather than the brushed aluminum that has been seen up until this point. Some of us pushed hard for an all-black with matte black frame - we showed it at DEMA, and all agreed that it was hot. I have liked the matte black frame all along - while it is different than what we originally envisioned, I'm sure that most of you will agree that it is an improvement.
- We are days away from completing what looks to be our last salt spray testing - we do this both internally and at an external lab.
- If all does indeed go well, we'll be in a position to begin shipping masks by the end of this month - there is a bit of rework and inspection that is going to make this a bit slow going, so it is hard to commit to quantities and exactly when they'll ship.
- The limited edition version - we have qualified a finish to match the original design goal - it is beautiful. We are continuing to qualify the laser engraving process - I do not have an update - these however, will surely follow the standard versions. Anyone that has these on order - your patience is greatly appreciated - and you're welcome, I'm sure to either hang in there, change your order to a standard mask, or cancel - that is ultimately up to you and the dealer, we'll be glad to help if we can.

Thank you once again for your continued patience -

Doug

On a side note. Have you guys heard anything new in regards to the new mask. I know the regular masks will be released first, by the end of the month. With the Limited Edition releasing sometime after.

I just got off the phone with Jesus Ortega at Oceanic about the Pioneer Mask and he told me that they have had problems with corrosion around the frame where the screws mount the frame to the mask. After two attempts to replate and correct the problem they are going to try using a rubber gasket or seal between the screw head and the frame and hope to receive the seals, test the mask in salt water and hopefully ship by the end of this week (week ending 3 April 2009)

I will say he seemed very honest and forthright witht the information so I still have confidence in Oceanic as a whole.

Still loking forward to this mask...

Well then we should be getting yet another email from scuba.com again stating & I do understand it's not their fault, but I'm to the point of canceling the order & getting a store credit, or have it put back on my card.

Dear Diver,

This should not come as any bigger a surprise to you than it did to us BUT, the Oceanic Ultra Clear Pioneer Mask in your order has been delayed by the Oceanic until 4/15/09 and barring any further delays on the manufacturer’s part, we expect to be able to ship that same day.

WOW that caught me totally off guard. I wasn't expecting that.

Iwhen I spoke to him I did mention that I was without a mask and had a trip coming up that I was hoping I did not have to go buy another mask for and he was nice enough to send me out (next day air mind you) a brand new Mako mask, a back pack and some decals with a note of apology for the delay on the pioneer. Yes it is still frustrating but at least he is trying to make it right.

WOW very nice. I too am without a mask, well I have 1 but it sat bent & now wont seal right. It's a matter of constantly clearing the mask, no fun. I too had planned on a weekend trip to CA. But that came & went. My next big trip is to Puerto Rico in June. I wonder if it will be available by then.

Guess what yet another delay..... :-( I did speak to Oceanic again today and they urrently have Slate Blue, Yellow and Red available but the limited editon mask is 60 - 90 outs due to engineering problems giving them fits. I wonder if they realize just how P.O'd people are getting? You cant mpromise something then continually back out... I wonder if I will get the price difference back???
