If you could find some kevlar material, it might be possible to combine the inner tube with the kevlar to make a cover. Best of luck.

i too have thought of that idea
now to find the kevlar
and just in time, my 80 lb. lift, just gave out
at 100 feet, it was a good thing that i had a back up 65 lb. lift.
i have a new 80 lb. lift but do not want to use it until i have some protection around it.
if any body knows where i can get a sheet of kevlar please let me know. if i have to i will sew my own.

You might try Cordura. It's super tuff and cheaper than kevlar. I have a pair of duck hunting waders faced with Cordura that you can cross a barbed wire fence with no snags. In addition, Cabela's has a new wader that is made with Armor-Flex (trade mark) a product that weaves streach lycra into 1000-denier nylon for tough stretchability. You may be able to buy the fabric.
I'm not sure why wet suits don't come with some abrasion protection like waders. Duck hunting is hard on neoprene and this stuff has been around for years. It would be a sweet solution for wreck diving.
