Am I correct in assuming that the only reason a tank is cylindrical is that is the most effective shape in dealing with internal and external pressure? If that is so, then could not some new high strength material be used to make a different shaped, perhaps more streamlined, tank? I can guess it would not be cost effective, but there seems to be a boutique market for anything, even a $1,000 bottle.

I don't think we will see anything other than a cylinder due to the dynamics of pressure as you mentioned. Any shape with a corner will require a weld and that would be a failure point.

Remember, you're pumping the thing up to 3000 psi (or higher for high pressure cylinders). Think how much "explosive force" is in your tires on your car, and that's just 35 psi!
