I am bringing my 14 year old son down to the keys in a few weeks to complete his PADI check out dives. We can dive in either key west or key largo. Does anyone have a strong opinion as to which area is better for a beginning diver? I'd like to avoid strong currents, etc.

I've done trips out of key west, but it's been a while (10 yes) since I've done Key Largo. Also, any recommendations for dive shops who are better with teenagers and check out dives?

Key Largo would be my choice for taking the new diver out for a first experience. Pennekamp park is right there and being a protected area like it is, there is just so much more to see. It'll make a much better impression on a new, young diver.
