Shortened Camera Battery-life
The batteries used in the HD HERO cameras need to be power cycled a few times when they're new before you'll get the full battery-life out of them.

To power cycle your battery, please charge until full and deplete by recording a video with the camera. Repeat this three times. Your battery-life should then be about 2 hours of continuous recording.

If you continue to have shortened battery-life, please contact GoPro Customer Support.

Recommended Chargers
If you plan to use a USB charger to charge your camera or Battery BacPac, be sure to research the volts (V) and amps (A) that the charger outputs before you connect your camera or Battery BacPac to it.

Our cameras and Battery BacPacs require USB chargers that output 5V and 1A. Using chargers that do not meet this requirement can potentially break your camera or Battery BacPac.

To properly charge your camera, first power it off and disconnect the BacPac if one is attached. Next, connect the camera to a USB port directly on the computer, preferably on the back of the computer if possible. Alternatively, you can connect it to a USB wall charger that outputs 5V and 1A. The front red LED should turn on to indicate charging.

Leave the camera powered off and charging until the front red LED turns off. Once the LED turns off, the camera is fully charged. This can take up to 4 hours if the computer is used and up to 2 hours if a USB wall charger is used.

If the camera doesn't power on or the red LED doesn't light up, check out our Camera Will Not Power On troubleshooting isntructions.

HERO3 Camera Battery-life
Here's a list of the average run times for the HERO3 cameras with a fully charged battery.

Avg. time for camera only Avg. time for lowest power consumption setting Avg. time for highest power consumption setting Avg. time for Camera + LCD Touch BacPac Avg. time for Camera + Battery BacPac2
Black Edition 1.5 hrs 1.5 hrs (1080-30) 1 hr (WVGA-240) 1 hr 2.5 hrs
Silver Edition 2 hrs 2 hrs (720-30) 1.5 hrs (WVGA-120) 1.5 hrs 3 hrs
White Edition 2.5 hrs 3 hrs (WVGA-60 and 720-30) 2 hrs (1080-30) 1.5 hrs 3.5 hrs

Please note there are a variety of conditions that can affect run times, such as:
Cold weather, which will reduce battery-life.
Enabling Wi-Fi, which will reduce battery-life
The above times are based on doing a continuous record. Stopping/starting recording, or powering camera on/off repeatedly will reduce the total record time.

Camera Will Not Power ON
If your camera is not powering on, there could be a fault with the camera, battery, SD card, or there could be a loose connection somewhere. We have some tips for you to try that should clear up the issue for you.

Remove any BacPac accessories, the battery, and SD card from the camera. Reinsert the battery only. Press the power button. If the camera powers on, your camera was frozen and you should be good to go now.

If your camera doesn't power on, remove/reinsert the battery and charge the camera via a USB charger or your computer. Don't attempt to power on the camera while it's charging. You should see the red LED light on the front of the camera. Once it goes off, disconnect the camera from USB and power it on. If it powers on, your battery was dead and just needed be charged.

If your camera doesn't power on after charging and it's a HERO3, take a look at the back red LED. If it's dimly lit, remove/reinsert the battery and try to power on the camera. You may need to do this up to 10 times before the camera powers on.

If you're unable to get your camera to power on, you can contact GoPro Customer Support by using the 'Contact Us' form.

Using the Camera While Charging
You can simultaneously charge and record with the HD HERO Original and HD HERO2 cameras. To do this, you can use the supplied USB cable. Use that to connect your camera to a USB wall charger or auto charger that outputs 5V and 1A. You cannot record while the camera is connected to a computer.
