Questions and Answers for Ikelite Substrobe DS51 Underwater Flash:

  • Carol:

What is the difference between a sub-strobe and a regular strobe? I had both full strobes, but one flooded my last trip. I do not have the funds for the full strobe, and was wondering if for wide angle photography if this would be sufficient for my photos when used with the DS161 strobe? Thank you. Carol Schoelch

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Substrobe is simply the name of the product given by the manufacturer. They compare very nicely to all of the strobes from Sea & Sea and Nikon.

  • Carol:

You answered my prior question as to the difference between strobes and substrobes. It looks like the same sync cord can be used for both. Is this correct? Or do you have to have a specific sync cord for the substrobe? Thank you. Carol Schoelch

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The same cord can be used for all Ikelite slave strobes.

Key Features
Compact and Easy To Use

The size and weight of the DS51 make it the perfect choice for the traveling underwater photographer. The DS51's intensity and angle of coverage are comparable to any strobe in its class. The strobe can easily switch between TTL/Auto and any of the six manual power settings through a large, easy-to-turn dial on the rear of the strobe.
A simple battery door is easy to remove and replace and provides a clear view of the o-ring seal. The strobe's battery compartment is independently sealed from the electronics preventing further damage in the event of a flood.

TTL Flash Exposure

When combined with a compatible Ikelite TTL system or film TTL system, the DS51 automatically adjusts brightness to provide perfect exposure whether you're shooting macro, portrait or wide angle.
