Rating: Best underwater digital camera Ive used so far...
Reviewer: Adam M., Thursday, October 01, 2009
I am an avid underwater photographer with about 140 camera dives. The DX-2G is the 6th digital UW camera Ive used, and so far, my favorite. I have both Sea & Sea and SeaLife cameras. I do not have SeaLifes most recent DC1000 camera though to compare to.
I currently shoot with the DX-2G, two Sea & Sea YS110a Strobes, and a Fish Eye Fix HG20DX Focus Light. My opinion is that the SeaLife cameras are great, and make underwater photography very easy and rewarding for people new to shooting. I think the Sea & Sea series gives me a bit more control and flexibility now as a more experienced diver and photographer. I have taken great photos with both, however.
First, the Sea &Sea mode works well on the DX-2G to add a hint of color back to the photos. I felt the DX-1G photos were a little muted in comparison to my SeaLife D800, and the DX-2G photos pop just a bit more than the DX-1G. Might stil be a bit muted in comparison to the Sealife cameras, but its better and easily adjusted on my computer.
Next, I love the video. My SeaLife took good video, but were generally very green or blue depending on depth. Ive gotten much better color and quality with the Sea & Sea. Still cant zoom while recording video though, which is unfortunate. (It does a digital zoom during recording. You can set the zoom before strarting to record.)
This system now comes with a better fiber optic cable attachment. I had issues with the DX-1G that sometimes only one strobe would flash instead of both. No issues with this setup.
I strongly suggest a wide angle lens for both large creatures as well as wide angle macro shots. I switch the wide angle lens on and off regularly when diving, so I recently added the lens caddy attachment. That makes a huge difference, just be sure to attach a good strong cable between the lens and your camera rig as it is heavy and expensive! The standard lens is wider than the SeaLife cameras and the wide angle is wider than SeaLifes wide angle, so I like this a bit more for getting large coral shots and for those occasions when you get close to large sealife. Also, it makes shooting divers easier as you can get close enough to really get some color.
The zoom capabilities are only OK at 3.0x. SeaLife is at 5.0x, and is a bit narrower lens to start with, so I think you can do better macro zoom shots with the SeaLife, but Ive still gotten some amazing macro shots with the DX-2G. And with the 12M capability, I can crop a photo and still print it at a decent size. I have not used the Close-Up lens, and that may be my next addition.
Finally, battery life is strong and good for two hour long dives. Of course, I dont do video the whole time or have the camera on the whole time as it boots up very quickly. Doing two dives was always a stretch with my SeaLife, and I hate to switch batteries on the dive boat. Too much moist air gets in the housing. That may be better on the DC1000, I cant say.
A couple quick suggestions:
I do put a moisture absorbing packet underneath the camera in the housing (suggested and provided by Sea & Sea), but I also add a purple Moisture Muncher style capsule behind the cameras flash. It will move around a little, but not interfere with anything. This helps reduce the humidity more quickly between battery changes and it works as an indicator for when to change the packets. When its pink, I know that both the desiccants are used up.
As always, take just the housing on a quick dive - I use the checkout dive for this - to ensure a good seal. I have not had any issues with the Sea & Sea cameras so far (2 SeaLifes have flooded, but been quickly replaced for free - thank you SeaLife!). Now, Ive learned to always take just the housing down for a test dive. It was an expensive lesson I hope you can learn from.
Final suggestion for any new UW photographers - Only one strobe is necessary, although two can be helpful. I have some great shots taken with only one strobe. However, some type of focus light is extremely beneficial, especially if there are a lot of particulate in the water. I use a focus light mounted on top of the camera, and that has improved my photos tremendously, especially on night and murky dives and macro shots. Also, the Sea & Sea strobes that have a pointing light can work well to help the camera focus. Both styles can work as a primary dive light for night dives as well, so you dont need to take a dive light with you, freeing up your hands.
Good hunting!
