Rating: LavaCore by Oceanic Trilaminate Polytherm Front-Zip Dive Wetsuit Review - $219.95 - Scuba Gear Customer Reviews
Reviewer: James Macdonnell
great product, have used it as an underlayer for some recent cold water dives and it definitely helped keep me in the deeper cold water a lot longer. only two minor issues: 1. i noticed a slight dethreading of one cuff sleeve stitching. its minor and im not going to send it back just because of that issue unless it completely unravelsand 2. i purchased the xl suit and find that it may be just a little more snug than i would like but then again i may just have to cut myself back to one latte per day and eat fewer donuts in order to get just the right fit.

Rating: Great tech and comfort for dedicated purpose

3mm polytherm by lavacore i was shocked to find out how warm this material is. as great as the tech is for keeping heat in, its still a thin suit that will allow heat to be drawn out in colder waters pretty quickly. i would recommend this as either a warm or shallow (>35ft) cold water dive. theres loads of mobility for wreck dives and i hope to test it as a base layer under a glacier this winter...will this review then.

Questions and Answers for LavaCore by Oceanic Trilaminate Polytherm Front-Zip Dive Wetsuit:

  • Debra:

What is mm of this wetsuit?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Typically items with a MM rating are neoprene based items, where as trilaminate and articles rated with an "ounce" rating are fabric based in their construction. This suit has a warmth equivalent of a 3mm neoprene suit.

  • Kathy:

I am a triathlete and am having a difficult time with wetsuits. I have had two panic attacks in open water, but only when wearing a set suit. I tried a wetsuit again yesterday, I didnt have a panic attack, but I couldnt wait to get it off (almost panicky). Someone suggested lava core because it wouldnt be as tight. I live in Texas and am scheduled to do a try on 3 November. The water wont be really cold, but I may need a wetsuit. Do you think a Lava core wetsuit would be better for me? Do you have any other suggestions?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The Lavacore would be a good choice. As long as the item is not used in the water you have 60 days to refund or exchange it.

  • kate:

what is better about a front zipper as opposed to a rear zipper?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

100% personal preference. There is no advantage with one over the other.

  • Peter:

Is the sizing similar to the tops and bottoms? I found I had to move up a size with the tops despite what the size charts said.

Elliott  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Different factors are taken into consideration on tops vs bottoms.

  • Mark:

Does this suit or skin per say , have the double zipper?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

No. It's a single directional zipper (one head) and zips from top (closed) to bottom (open).

  • jason:

Does this front zip suit come in a 5 ml thickness?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Jason, this is the only thickness that this suit comes in.

  • Daniel:

I would like to order the front zipper wetsuit. Laveacore is offering Free Hood & Socks for both front and rear suits. I only see this offer on your site for rear zipper suit... Can we get same deal with front zipper ? Thank You

Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Good morning, this black Friday deal cannot be substituted with any other suits. I hadn't seen this one. Great deal!

  • Brenda:

how does this suit compare to polyolefin?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Brenda, your looking at a warmer suit. The polyolefin is 5oz thinner then the LavaCore material.

  • Pauline:

my body type is "petite and curvy" (not chubbybut short, little, & big bust) and i am looking at either the m or the ml on the size chart. i have heard these run on the smaller side. which size do you recommend?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

it''s hard to say without dimensions. The most important measurements any time you purchase a wetsuit using the manufacturer''s sizing charts will always be your waist and chest/bust measurements. The suit needs to fit your torso correctly in order to do its job properly. Keep in mind there is no such thing as a comfortable wetsuit on the surface. You want it to be snug, but not cut off circulation to your extremities. The more snug it is, the thinner the layer of water your body is heating. If its too loose you will remain warm for awhile, but eventually your body won''t be able to keep up with the greater amount of water flowing through the suit and you''ll wind up getting cold faster. After that your height is a secondary measurement. The manufacturers realize that generally speaking your boots and gloves can overlap slightly short arms and legs, or the diver can push or roll up longer sleeves and/or arms if need be. Weight is a measurement the diver can usually ignore. It really has little to no bearing what so ever on the sizing and fit of your suit. The manufacturers do not take into account muscle being more dense than fat, so based simply on fitness levels 2 people can be the exact same size but quite different in weight. This measurement should only be used if the person is literally on the fence between 2 sizes in all categories.

  • Shvonne:

Im looking for a skin to wear by itself and under a wet and/or drysuit. How does this suit compare to the Pinnacle, will they both work well alone and as an undergarment? Which would be warmer? Thanks!

Aaron  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hi Shvonne, Both skins are great to wear wet or dry. The Pinnacle skin(320g) would be slightly warmer then the Lavacore skin(240g).

Close to the skin, this soft internal fleece combined with high 4-way stretch produces the ultimate comfort / warmth / weight ratio, a true leader amongst artificial/man-made fabrics within the water sports industry. Wet or dry, hot or cold, Polytherm helps control your core temperature longer and when wet maintains neutral buoyancy, crucial to divers and any high activity watersports enthusiast.

Due to water weight being eliminated the garment becomes an ultra performance piece of equipment - essential to your body’s needs of maintaining a safe and secure temperature. Whether worn as a stand alone garment, under your wetsuit or even clothing, olytherm is guaranteed to keep you well insulated, flexible, lightweight and free from windchill.

Polytherm Tri-Laminate
Combining the outer shell and the inter PU layer, the fleece of Polytherm integrated ensures a very high heat and insulation rating, the PU film layer gives this combination added water resistance and high protection from windchill. Used in areas where extreme heat retention is required.

1) Ultraflex Durable Outer Protection +
This outer lycra layer is a 180g/sqm knitted nylon warp knit Tricot with water repellent treatment to ensure fast water run off and anti wind chill properties.

2) Waterproof/Breathable MIddleMembrane +
Layer is an impermeable Breathable Microporous high stretch PU Film which is wind proof and breathable allowing perspiration to be drawn away in hot conditions.

3) Insulative Thermal Inner Layer +
Fleece layer is a 240g/sqm 4 way stretch polyester fleece with elastane. It has Anti-Pill treatment as well as Anti-Microbial treatment to reduce odor and eliminate bacteria.

Seam Construction
All of the Lavacore seams are overlapped during flatlock sewing to ensure maximum water integrity and reduced waterflow through the seams. Maximum heat retention is therefore achieved when worn in colder water conditions. See diagram. To ensure maximum integrity and longevity of your Lavacore garment the seam cross-overs on the inside of the suit are locked under the threads of the adjoining seam. The seam construction being doubled and flat-locked allows for maximum stretch out of the four way stretch fabric technology without compromising at seam edges.

Panel Design
The Lavacore range includes female and male specific cut and unique design.
Lycra panels with contemporary lines and graphics are incorporated into all garments.
Full Under the Arm Gusset. This ensures there is no rub or irritation on the sensitive under side of the arms and side of the body. It also reduces restricted movement considerably and allows for extra reach without seam strain and damage.
