Rating: 1mm Akona Wetsuit
Reviewer: Richard Sandquist, Friday, February 26, 2010
I bought this for a diving trip to the Philippines. The water temps were 79-80 degrees F during the trip and I was generally comfortable in the water although I would not recommend this wetsuit for any water temp below 80 degrees. My only real complaint was that there was a lot of wear on the shoulders of the suit due to the straps from my BCD. I had not noticed that kind of wear on my other Akona 3mm wetsuit so I dont know if it was a result of the thinner wetsuit material or just the way I was wearing this suit. The price was good and I think it is a good buy if you are diving warm water and are looking for something more than a rash guard.

Rating: Just the thing!

I loved this new wetsuit! It was just the perfect protection for those long dives when I would get a chill and lose the enjoyment for the last part. This 1mm jumpsuit looks good, is easy to put on/off and did well in cool Caribbean waters in February. It also dried very quickly 5-stars!

Rating: Super nice suit!
Reviewer: Darren S A., Monday, December 28, 2009 - View all my reviews
Took my wife and her new Akona 1 mm to Curacao for a week over Xmas. Decent diving, but what a great suit. Super fit on her, very nicely made, I am extremely pleased with the purchase. Also, it packs down to about the size of a medium size book and is very light, so its great in the gear bag if it allows you to leave home a heavier full suit (it is smaller and lighter than her 3 mm shorty by a lot). We intended it to use instead of a 3/2 shorty, hoping for full body coverage and sufficient warmth for warm water climate diving. By comparison, a 1.5 mm Pinnacle she tried on did not fit in the body nearly as well and had something really weird going on at the neck, with a lot of extra material and extremely poor design of the neck seal / velcro / zipper system. If it wasnt a factory defect in how it was put together, it is not usable. I spent 5 min staring at the back of it trying to figure out how to get the neck seal to lay flat and close the velcro without big bunches of excess neoprene bunching up. End result = not possible. Temperature sensitivity is personal, but I can say she used it alone at 81 oF water temperature for several sunny days but was verging on needing more warmth on cloudy days (I was fine in a 3 mm shorty). Adding a 2/2 mm shorty underneath solved that. This is a really nice piece to add to the collection, for when one wants more than a skin (which we dont like), want full protection rather than a shorty eg. night dives, but dont quite need a full suit or heavier shorty for warmth. For us that would be water temperatures of ca. 81-87 oF. Or as a layering piece. I will now be looking for such a 1-1.5 mm for myself, though I admit I wont look quite as sleek and chic as she did in this Akona.

Im 63" @ 230lbs so I got the 2XL. It could have been a bit tighter but I dont want to go to the 1XL as it already rides up my rear end like a pair of pants caught on a fence post with someone still in them. Good loking suit though. It may fit nicely on people under 6 but I dont recomend it for the taller folks. Ill be exchanging mine.

Rating: Great wetsuit!
Reviewer: Wendy C., Thursday, December 11, 2008 - View all my reviews
I dived with this wetsuit on a liveaboard in St. Croix in December. I only got chilled on two of my dives the whole week, and some people were using 5mm suits. The Akona is very flexible, easy to don, and still allows room for comfortable movements. I really like the fact that there is no strap to put around your foot like other lightweight wetsuits (I also have a 1mm Henderson with this). I find that the strap makes it mandatory to have the leg fit inside your dive bootie, and you end up sloshing around in water-filled booties. Alternatively, this Akona lets you put the leg on the outside of the bootie so that the water drains. I also had comments from the other divers that the pattern on the back looked like mesh underwater and was "cool" ! Definitely recommended for a tropical dive suit, or for a wonderful layering piece.

Rating: NC Diving
Reviewer: Steven H., Tuesday, July 08, 2008
I was diving in North Carolina. Water temp ranged from 84 to 70. It didnt quite do the job keeping me warm at 70 degrees, but then i wasnt really moving to fast as i was looking for shark teeth instead of spear fishing. Over all I like the versatility it gives me as I can wear it under my other suits, if it alone isnt enough.

I bought this suit for Cozumenl in March and it was perfect. Warm and comfortable, good zipper and closures and as usual great service from Scuba.com.
