If 5 stars means totally satisfied with purchase of my front zipper shorty, than I am. Fits to size. The only thing I would suggest is adding a small leash to the zipper, because you have better leverage on zipping up. I live in Lake Tahoe and the water never really gets warm. So the 5mm is perfect for swimming beyond the shoreline. Thanks ;-)

I have several wet suits, both shorty and full, but this is my first front zipper type. Overall a very well made shorty with a hefty zipper. I really like the front zipper which just makes everything easier. I found the leg section to be a little too short. I like a shorty with legs that go to just above the knee but this one is much shorter and only covers about half way down the thigh. Other that that Im happy with the purchase.

Rating: Warm and comfortable

Bought this for extra warmth while on a live aboard in Bahamas. 4-5 dives a day can sap me. Bought my regular size but too small over top of my insulated dive skin and 3 ML suit. Extra large perfect, but likely too big to be worn alone. Really easy slipping over my 3 ml suit. Short arms, legs, and full length zipper made doffing and doning a breeze. Warm, comfortable, well made, and not restricting in the least. 22 dives it looks still brand new. Thrilled with it. Would suggest one size bigger if using over top of another suit.

Rating: Beautiful

I love this suit. It is better to start the zipper before you step into it as it is more difficult to start when on the body. Great fit, easy access in and out while others are still peeling theres from their bodies. I only wish they made this in a 3mm version for warmer water. I would buy one of those in a minute.

Rating: Great shorty for the price
Reviewer: Jason S.
I ordered one size larger than the chart said I would need and got a perfect fit. Seems to be well made have had no problems with it. Good option if you need a shorty for tropical locations or layering over a full suit if you will be in temperate waters.

Rating: Easy to get in to!
Reviewer: Shane E.
this wetsuit is nice because its a front zip and you simply step into it. there are not a lot of 5mm shorties out there-this one is a bargain at the price listed. furthermore, you can we are a 3/2 under it and it provides exposure protection almost as good as a regular 7mm better than buying a 7mm you rarely use.

Overall, a very easy to get into suit, however, somewhat difficult to get out of if you do not have assistance. Very comfortable and the 5mm keeps you much warmer than anticipated. I would recommend to anyone looking for a suit that is lightweight and easy to transport.

Questions and Answers for Pinnacle 5mm Escape 5 Front Zip Mens Shorty Wetsuit:

  • Laura:

Im a female age 72, 5 foot tall 200 pounds with a 50 inch waist. Most wetsuits taper in at the waist so they dont fit me. My waist tapers out. Do you have any advice?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Laura, when you are sizing a wet suit or dive skin. The two most important measurements are going to be your chest and waist. Height is a secondary measurement and weight you throw out the window. Weight has nothing to do with the sizing of a wetsuit. If you have any other questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822.

  • jim:

i guess what im asking is: is this suit OK to swim in ?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

The differences in suits made for scuba and snorkeling such as you'd see in a scuba shop and ones for swimming are that scuba/snorkel suits are made to keep the diver warm with very limited motion. They are made for the diver whose arms will be positioned at their side or possibly folded beneath them. They are not designed for the arm motion a freestyle swimming stroke or even a breast stroke requires. The are flexible and will allow the swimmer this range of motion for a time, but eventually based on the fit of the suit it will begin to rub and chaffe under the arms and around the shoulders. Suits more suitable for swimming can be found on our Swimming/Triathlon page found

  • jim:

can you swim over 1 mile in these suits ? doing alcatraz...also my 15 year old daughter is 55 120 pounds 25 inch waist and 34in chest , what size shorty should she get for this ?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

There is no limitation on the distance any products for scuba or snorkeling can be used outside of the amount of air a person may use on a dive. The ability to swim in this product over a mile in cold northern California waters is impossible for us to state based on the tolerances of the user. From the sizing you gave, the Ladies XS would be the best fit.

  • Brian:

Is this a good wetsuit for surfing? I saw the questions about swimming, but Im also concerned about the zipper being on the front and what it might do in contact with the board. Thanks!

    Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Typically a back zip wetsuit works best for surfing.

  • Pete:

I plan to use the shorty on its own in warmer waters. How does the full length zip prevent water flushing in from the leg where the zip ends?

    Aaron  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hi Pete, There is a small layer of neoprene behind the zipper, that stops the water from flowing in and out.

  • debbie:

I plan to play watervolleyball throughout the winter months. I get cold very easily and even in Central Florida it can be chilly. What wetsuit product would you recommend? I would prefer a "shorty" style. Secondly, i wear a womans size 14 so what size would i take? I dont want anything tight fitting.

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Unfortunately we've no experience with that sport, but it seems like first off you'd want to look at something with some sort of superstretch neoprene. That will offer the greatest mobility and flexibility. After that the water temps you are playing in will have a hand in determining the thickness of suit you need. Keeping in mind that playing a sport you will generate a great deal more heat than a diver will, so you can get by with a thinner suit. I'd recommend no greater than a 3mm suit. Lastly sizing. You always want to use your waist and bust/chest measurements as your most important measurements. After that height is the next most important. Weight you can generally ignore completely.

  • steve:

king 1 shorty 62" 282 lbs need shorty

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

The most important measurements when purchasing a wetsuit are always going to be your waist and chest/bust measurements. After that your height is a secondary measurement. This particular is not made in the King 1 size.

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Im looking for a warm suit to participate in a 12 hour thrash session at Coronado Bay in San Diego in February. The water temp will be about 60* and I need to be able to run, do push-ups, etc in this suit and stay warm in the surf. Is this a good suit for this? If not, what is?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Emily, yes this suit would be the suit that I would suggest for you. When you are sizing a wetsuit or dive skin. The two most important measurements are going to be your chest/bust and waist. Height is a secondary measurement and weight is the last measurement you take into account.

  • Adi:

Hi, I am looking to do some swimming on the beaches around Boston during summer and the water temperature is 60 degrees according to some websites! Is this a good wetsuit to get, my research indicates that 5mm is enough but is there going to be a problem that it is a shorty? Then again I am not looking to do anything crazy, just a little off the beach swimming with swimm fins, maybe an hour or so at the time? Thanks

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

For swimming, this shorty should do quite well for you!

Pinnacle's latest evolution of the Escape two-piece suit system comes in both 5mm and 7mm thicknesses. Both are step-in shorty vests that can be used with any jumpsuit of any thickness or
style to create a two-piece wetsuit for maximum warmth, or as a stand alone product
in warmer waters. They can even be worn with skins in temperate oceans.

7mm suit includes a built in hood
• Both include titanium lined neoprene material
• Double glued and blind stitched construction
• Reinforcing disks on every seam intersection
• A full length diagonal zipper that fully opens on the left thigh
• The 7mm variety even has a built-in hood!

The key step to making any wetsuit perform to its ultimate potential is reducing water transfer. This process, whereby water from the diving environment enters and exits the wetsuit, allows cold water to enter the suit and lets bodywarmed water exit; thus chilling the diver, even in tropical waters. PINNACLE nearly eliminates water transfer by creating better barriers to keep cold water out, making more form-fitting products that prevent internal water movement, employing the renowned Merino™ lining system to enable body heat to warm internal water, and then making it extremely difficult for that warm water to escape.

In order to prevent water entry and egress, PINNACLE employs the latest technology in sealing systems. Features like honeycomb o-ring wrist seals, Orcaskin™ forearm gussets, smoothskin chimney seals in the ankles, roll-neck collars with smoothskin sealing surfaces, smoothskin-to-smoothskin sealing surfaces on 10mm spine pads, and the innovative Pinnacle Defense System (P.D.S.) combine in PINNACLE suits to create a significantly better water barrier than in other brands. These sealing systems work as checkpoints, neither allowing water in the suit nor out.

The second step, having a more form-fitting suit, is achieved by offering divers more choices in sizes. PINNACLE offers as many as 17 male, 12 female and 4 children’s sizes in wetsuits, as well as more sizes of boots, gloves, and hoods than most other manufacturers.
PINNACLE has the ability to customize suits to some extent to fit people with more challenging shapes, but with up to 33 stock sizes, one is sure to fit almost any diver perfectly; and a tighter, better-fitting suit leaves less room for water to move, which keeps the diver warmer.
