Rating: Great mask!
Reviewer: Megan H.
I used this mask on my recent trip and it has been wonderful. My previous mask was the same brand and model (except in black) and I had it for about 4 years with no issues. I got the clear frame this time and much prefer it to the black because it lets more light in. I also opted for the larger size this time and was very pleased with the fit. Overall, a great mask that I would highly recommend

Rating: Wow. High quality mask
Reviewer: Benjamin Shey  -  View all my reviews
This mask is great piece of scuba equipment. Let me start with the packaging. I comes in a great hard case, but unlike some other mask boxes, the mask stands upright with the lenses perpendicular to the horizontal. In other words, the mask sits in the box in the same orientation that one would wear it (as opposed sitting with the lenses facing up). The mask itself is super high quality. If you have a high nose bridge, i wouldnt recommend this mask. The mask it low profile due to the subframe technology, and the cross bit over the nose is actually metal. The lenses are great. They are so clear and dont have a greenish tint. You cant even tell they are there. The mask strap fits perfectly in the mask strap covers they sell here. The mask strap has a great, simple and easy system for tightening and loosening the strap. The mask itself is not at all leaky and is comfortable. I dont know what more to say... Its a great scuba mask!

Ive used a lot of masks and this one by far has been the best so now I own 2 of them. They dont fog rarely leak but if they do its minimal. I went on a dive in Playa del Carmen and the dive masters were all impressed how well this mask did.

Questions and Answers for Atomic Ultra Clear Subframe Mask:

  • Jim:

Can you tell me the manufacture number for this mask

Greg  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

    Mfg Part Number : 04-1020-00

Clarke  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Jim, Thank you for your inquiry! The Manufacture part # for the Atomic Ultra Clear Subframe Scuba is: 04-1020-00. http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-32/029079/Atomic-Ultra-Clear-Subframe-Scuba-Dive-Mask.html If you have any questions or wish to place an order, please call us at 1-800-247-2822.

  • David:

I would like to order the Atomic Subframe dive mask in black and yellow. I also want to order it with a -5.5 diopter. However, I can not add the lenses to my order. Every time I click order lenses, I go to a page that lists scuba gear, not lens options.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Go to the mask section and then to "masks with optical lenses" from there you can pick the mask and right below the mask is the dropdown for the corrective lenses. Just the order the mask and lenses from that page.

  • Art:

Does the Atomic still come in only full lens strength as far as +2.5 in concerned or is there a "look down" lens? Ive tried the Trident stick on lens but they still come loose after the first dive even thought it comes with a silicone type adhesive. The other prescription masks appear to have the look down section way too low. Thanks, Art

Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello, this atomic mask can come with "Positive Gauge Readers" up to +2.5

  • David:

bill, there is no down window for lenses. there is a down window for color and sizes. i have on many attempts clicked to lenses for xs, atomic, sherwood, and... each time i am directed to a page that has categories and packages. in short, the site does not have lenses and until someone tries on their own to order lenses, the problem will not be fixed.

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello David, right now with the Atomic mask. The only optical lens that is available is the full lens is a negative prescription that will be the full lens (for near sighted). If you are looking for a down look mask with a +1.75 lens then I would suggest the XS Scuba Down Look Scuba Dive Mask with Gauge Reader web link: http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-32/027145/XS-Scuba-Down-Look-Mask-with-Gauge-Reader.html. Or if you are looking for a stronger optical lens then we do have a few that we can suggest to you. If you would like to place an order or have any other questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822.

  • Doyle:

Trying to decide on the size I need, what would be considered average adult small-medium or medium-large?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Doyle, if the person wearing this mask is under 110 lbs then you will want the small/medium size. If you are over 110 lbs then you want the medium/large size. If you have any other questions or would like to place an order please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822.

  • Mike:

I am 180 lbs with a beard and my wife is 130 lbs with no beard. What size Atomic ultra clear subfram mask should we order for each of us. Thanks.

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Generally speaking the med/large fits just about all normal/average sized adults.

  • Rick:

I bought this mask at the local dive shop without any corrective lenses. Didnt know they were available. Can I order the corrective lenses (+2.5) for the far sighted and have them put in my mask at the local shop?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Yes, they are replacement lenses that can be done by any dive shop.

  • Robert:

I need a mask with bifocal +2.25 what do you recommend +2.0 or +2.5

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

    +2.0

  • Robin:

Can you give me the skirt measurements for this mask? With the mask face down, the measurements from the top edge of the skirt to the bottom, and the side edge to side edge. Metric, if possible. I have a very hard to fit face!

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Unfortunately we do not have that info. Also, that doens't necessarily have as much to do with the correct fit of your mask as the shape and style of the skirt and how the shape fits to the points on your face that my cause leakage.

  • Michael:

I wear progressive lenses (+2.50 - left, +1.25 - right). I have trouble reading my gauges, especially on night dives. What magnification do you recommend? Thanks, Mike

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

You purchase a dive mask with lenses using the Sphere reading off your optical prescription only. As they are only made in incriments of .50 you will round up to the next nearest .50 in power.

  • marty:

I have prescription glasses with blended lenses for short and far sight What do you recommend for a diving mask lense short or far

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Marty, most people go for short so they can read there gauges.

  • Kristi:

I need a new optical dive mask and I have a narrow face, what do you recommend? I saw several styles in optical masks on your page and would appreciate your input to get a good fit. thanks, kristi

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Kristi, I would suggest this mask in the smaller version of this mask.

  • A:

I tried this Atomic mask in the pool and found it leaking more than I want it to. Even descending from a still position down to 7 feet caused the mask to rise up a little and leak from the bottom. Im Asian, round face, smaller nose, but in need of a RX mask. Any suggestions to determine if this mask is the right one for me before I pay the $$ to get rx lenses installed?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Any of the other masks on the masks with optical lenses page, will all be the same fit but different from the Atomic. http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-53/Masks-Masks-w--Optical-Lenses.html

  • Suzanne:

Hello On my way to Virgin Islands to snorkel. I need a good mask that I will use once or twice a year for a week. My face is fairly narrow. Please advise, I need these shipped to NJ within about 10 days

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The smaller size for this mask would be a good choice. Ground orders are delivered within to weeks. You can place the order on the website. Select the need by date you need the order by and the shipping charge will be adjusted accordingly and listed when you proceed to checkout and prior to submitting the order.

  • Marilyn:

Im 58 yo women, weigh 155, have a slightly slimmer than average face. 90% of my snorkeling typically surface to 6-7 feet deep. Im getting these with optical lenses, what size mask do you think?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The smaller size fit narrower faces. As long as the item is not used in the water you have up to 60 days to refund or exchange it.

  • ben:

I want to see about ordering a mask with prescription lenses. I dont see an easy way to do this. Please advise.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Go to the mask section and then the "masks with optical lens". There will be a link to add the lens. You will use the first number on each eye from your prescription.

  • Harry:

Looking for a mask that doesnt hurt the underside of my nose. I currently use a scubamax which works well but after awhile it seems to but pushing up on my septum which results in an annoying ache. Is there a design that would make a difference or is this just the way it is with all masks?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The Atomic Frameless would be a good one to try: http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-32/029085/Atomic-Ultra-Clear-Frameless-Mask.html

  • fidel:

i need this mask with corective lenses, what if it dosnt fit whene i get it?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Fidel, you can send it back and we can exchange it for the other size mask or refund you for your return.

  • Bartow:

Can you tell me the mask and snorkel I previously ordered from you? It was in March of 2012. I am getting some mold on the mask (where the glass meets the frame of the mask) that I cannot scrub off. I guess I need to replace mask and snorkel and need your advice. I swim 3 to 5 miles a week so I am looking for a mask that is low volume and aerodynamic and a snorkel with a very large diameter. I need a mask than does not fog up or fogs up as little as possible. I prefer purge valves on mask and snorkel. On the snorkel, I like it open at the top so that breathing is restricted as little as possible. What do you recommend? Bartow Jones

  • Dale:

when the mask is fitted for optical lenses is it like a bifocal pair of glasses? Im looking for something that would be clear on the top with no prescription and reader like lens strength on the bottom

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

You would select the "For the far sighted - Positive Gauge Readers " table in the strength of lens you require.

  • Rick:

Im a 63 year old male recreational snorkeler. Ive a moustache and I want to buy a mask that doesnt leak around my moustache. Any suggestions? While I dont have a budget in mind, my main concern is a good seal. After that price would be secondary.

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Rick, if you do not want your mask to leak then you would need to trim and thin out your moustache or shave it off to get the proper fit. If that is not an option then you would need to go with a full face mask so your mask would not leak on you.

  • Young:

I want to order atomic snorkel, mask and prescription lenses, can you ship them to an address in Australia? I tried with leisure pro and they couldnt.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

You can place the order on the website. Using Amazon Checkout is the easiest way to process international orders. The shipping charge will be listed when you proceed to checkout and prior to submitting the order.

  • Ed:

Does this come with the Atomic compact travel case?

Aaron  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hi Ed, All Atomic masks come with low profile travel case that protects your mask.

  • Kent:

Atomic web page says that you have to send mask to Atomic to have corrective lenses placed. Or can you do that for me at Scuba.com before sending mask???

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Kent, we do carry the optical lens for this mask. So yes if you order the lens for the mask we will install them for you so when you get the mask they will be installed and ready to use the mask.

  • JIAYANG:

Hi, I was advised that I can change the corrective lens for this mask by my self, so I just purchased the lens from you. However, I recently found that on the website of Atomic, they say that the corrective lens can only be factory assembled. And the video link provided by one of your instructor showing how to change lens seems does not fit this mask. So I dont know what to do, I found there is a screw inside the mask, do you think I should just unscrew it and change the lens?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello JIAYANG, here are the lens you need for this mask: http://www.scuba.com/shop/product_display.asp?SKUCode=029079%20Lenses&Action=Search. As for installing them your self it can be done but if you do not sit the lens in correctly your mask will leak. But to install them yourself there is a small hex screw on the inside of the mask you will need to remove to be able to take the lens out.

  • Joel:

6 feet tall, 210 pounds, large head (LOL) what would be the best mask for me? Past masks have dug into the bridge of my nose. I use my mask for snorkelling only about 4-5 times a year. I would also appreciate a snorkel recommendation. Most of my snorkelling is done in the Caribbean. Thanks, Joel

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

This mask has a slightly wider fit than some, so it would have a good chance of offering you a more comfortable fit. The only thing to consider in a snorkel would be whether it is a "Dry" or a "Semi-Dry" snorkel. The OQ Pacific Dry snorkel would be perfect choice.

  • John:

I would like to order this mask with corrective lens installed. I am far sighted and Left is -1.75 right eye is -1.25 Which lens should I choose?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello John, since the lens are not made in either .25 or .75 with your numbers being negative number you would round up to the next number. So you are going to need -2.0 in the right and -1.5 in the left.

  • JIAYANG:

Hi, I live in Australia and I want to buy a atomic subframe mask, but they dont have prescription lenses here in Australia. If I buy the lenses from you, can I change it by myself?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Yes. Changing out the lenses is not a difficult task. We have a video at http://www.scuba.com/video/35/How-to-Install-Optical-Lenses-In-a-Scuba-Diving-Mask.html that explains it for you. The Atomic mask is not included in the video, but the tips and techniques are the same.

  • Scott:

I just purchased this mask from you. Is there a recommended preparation of the mas - like cleaning of the interior - before the first use? I have heard of scrubbing the interior with toothpaste?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Cleaning it with toothpaste will clean the residue of the material used in the grinding process to prevent chipping. After that a normal defog will keep it clear during dives. It's not a bad idea to use a commercial mask cleaner or toothpaste periodically to help remove some of the grime that builds up from use as well.

  • Mal:

Im about to order a new mask with prescription lens..my prescription has three #s (1) SPH +1.50 (2) CYL -0.75 (3) AXIS 90 which of these #s do i use when I place my order. Thank you for any help you can give. MP

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

With a prescription dive mask, the only number needed is the Sph also often seen as Sphere.

  • Terry:

Thanks, Arthur! Also, is this mask compatible with the Sherwood Absolute Dry Snorkel? I just purchased the latter a few months ago and would prefer not replacing it yet. Thanks again, Terry

Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Not a problem! Any snorkel is compatible with any mask. You won''t have any problem.

  • Li-Wei:

Do you have ANTI-FOG Masks with Optical Lenses for snorkeling?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

All scuba masks are suitable for snorkeling. The masks claiming to be anti-fog masks are typically found to be a gimmick. Your best bet is to use a commercial defog such as Sea Gold or 500PSI.

  • Terry:

Hi, I have been snorkeling and diving for 10 years. This looks like the best mask that can be fitted with optical lenses. Is that true? Also, I have always used one with a purge feature. Is that a hard transition to make? Thanks, Terry

Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello, this is one of the best masks period. I have one myself. Unfortunately no Atomic masks have purges.

SubFrame Mask Features

• Unmatched durability and resistance to breakage
• Optical quality, distortion-free UltraClear lenses
• Hydrodynamic styling with no exposed external frame
• Removable lenses for corrective lens options
• Wide vision and low volume
• Great fit
• Squeeze to adjust buckles
• Clear or Black silicone rubber with co-molded color accents
• Available with ARC technology lenses

ULTRACLEAR Lenses

Both the Atomic Frameless and SubFrame models offer a new standard feature never seen or “seen through” before in a diving mask. We call them UltraClear lenses.

What makes UltraClear special? Did you ever notice that normal dive mask lenses have a green tint to the glass? To see this tint, put your existing mask up to a piece of white paper and see for yourself. The green tint you see is the result of iron impurities left over in lower quality “float” or window type glass. That green tint distorts true colors and blocks out some of the light that reaches the eye.

UltraClear is a new and exciting optical quality glass with exceptional clarity and high light transmission, with no color distortion. The exceptionally high light transmittance and lack of distortion in the UltraClear lens maximizes the light available for improved visual acuity, especially underwater in low light conditions.

Available in Standard and Medium Fit

The Atomic SubFrame masks are available in standard and medium fit. The medium fit mask has a skirt designed for narrow faces. The medium fit mask is identical to the standard model in every other detail.

Both versions of the patented Atomic SubFrame come with the optical quality UltraClear lens.

The SubFrame is strongest and most indestructible frame made and is warranted for a lifetime from breakage.

Compact Travel Cases

Atomic Frameless Masks come in our unique compact travel case that matches the skirt color – clear or black. The exclusive low profile travel case takes up only half the space of common mask boxes. Both SubFrame and Frameless Atomic Mask models are designed to fold flat to fit in a pocket or a compact travel case. Travel cases can also be purchased separately.
