Rating: Good for warmth but poor stitching and difficult to put on
Reviewer: Todd Walter
Once I finally got it on it worked great for core warmth and I needed less weight due to its neutral buoyancy. I have a broad chest and getting it on by pulling it up was difficult. It would be nice to have one of the shoulder straps as a Velcro so it can be opened wider. I also found after just 6 dives the stitching around the collar has come undone needing resewing. I had hoped for a better product.

Rating: Sizing issues
Reviewer: David G.
The Lavacore sizing chart is way off. According to the chart a Medium would be plenty big for me. However, I could not even squeeze into the Medium or ML. Twice had to exchange for a larger size, and ended up in an XL, a full two sizes higher than the chart suggested. As far as the wetsuit goes, its a very warm and comfortable wetsuit! Im glad I persisted in finding the right size.

Questions and Answers for LavaCore by Oceanic Trilaminate Polytherm Mens Sleeveless Shorty:

  • Larry:

I am 5"11 and weigh 310 pounds I wear a size 46 pants I have a 51 inch chest and a 55 inch stomach. I have been losing weight and training for a mini triathlon and I was wondering if this would work for a triathlon suit, what size would you suggest.

    Elliott  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Larry, According to the LavaCore sizing chart with the Chest/Waist specifications that you have provided, you are a size 3XL.

  • jillian:

Im looking at this lava core by oceanic sleeveless wetsuit, but I dont see it given an mil grade. Does this correlate to a 1, 2, or 3 mil? thank you-

    Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

This trilaminate material has a windbreak nylon shell over the polytherm fleece layer using it under a suit will give you about 1mm warmth.

  • Barb:

Is this lava core good for swimming. I would like to use it in a triathalon

    Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello, it is excellent for swimming mainly because it doesn''t add buoyancy like neoprene does.

  • scott:

Im 59" and weigh 250. Im 47" around the middle. Can you recommend a size or maybe a custom made wet suit?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

In this suit your only options would be to go for the extreme in sizing as it won't help if you can't get it on. 3xl would be your waist size. Unfortunately I don't have your chest size to compare with that. The height is going to be an issue though as it will be quite long. Having it tailored to height would be the next step.

  • cheryl:

I dont see a zipper. How do you put it on?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Cheryl, one side (left side) shoulder strap opens up and you would step into this and then put your right shoulder on the close the left side and you will be in the suit.

  • David:

What is the difference between LavaCore Sleeveless mens Shorty part # 873.3317 and LavaCore Sleeveless mens jump suit part # 873.3917 other than price?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello David, this is our mistake we have the wrong picture on the high price item. The higher priced item has long legs. So it would be legs to the ankle.

  • Cheryl:

Hello I am a female 59, I weigh 209lbs my waist is 45, but I am still losing, would a 2XL be the right fit for me?

    Aaron  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hi Cheryl, Yes the 2xl would be right.

  • Debbie:

I weigh approx 100-104 pound and 55 - what size do you suggest in the LavaCore by Oceanic Trilaminate Polytherm Sleeveless Shorty Wetsuit?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Debbie, when you are sizing a wet suit or dive skin. The two most important measurements are going to be your chest/bust and waist. Height is a secondary measurement and weight is the last measurement you take into account.

  • Richard:

At 6 6" and 380lbs the only products that are near my requirements are the LavaCore 4XL.But even those fall a little short....they topout at 6 5" and 325lbs (waist and chest measurements are fine). Can I still use the 4XL or is the extra inch and pounds an issue?

    Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello, definitely stick with the 4XL. And you are correct the extra inch and pound wouldn''t be an issue.

  • Kelly:

Use a 3mm Henderson full wetsuit and am looking for something to layer when the water is a litter cooler. What would be your best suggestion? I am going to Hawaii in Nov and was told by a couple other divers to get a dive skin as the water is a litter cooler than Cozumel

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Kelly, you will be diving and snorkeling in Hawaii in warm water. If you are looking to layer this item would work for you. This suit will give you the same thickness as a 2.5mm suit.

  • Lu:

Seam Construction

All of the Lavacore seams are overlapped during flatlock sewing to ensure maximum water integrity and reduced waterflow through the seams. Maximum heat retention is therefore achieved when worn in colder water conditions. See diagram. To ensure maximum integrity and longevity of your Lavacore garment the seam cross-overs on the inside of the suit are locked under the threads of the adjoining seam. The seam construction being doubled and flat-locked allows for maximum stretch out of the four way stretch fabric technology without compromising at seam edges.

Panel Design

The Lavacore range includes female and male specific cut and unique design.
Lycra panels with contemporary lines and graphics are incorporated into all garments.
Full Under the Arm Gusset. This ensures there is no rub or irritation on the sensitive under side of the arms and side of the body. It also reduces restricted movement considerably and allows for extra reach without seam strain and damage.
