The perfect tool for pickin up those flounder while scalloping i did lose the loader on first use so dont keep it in the handel just get one with a lanyard or put one on it.instructions are tricky but not too bad.and the leg holster not tight enough i guess everyone in italy must be fat cause im not a small guy eaither.other than that i like it, best used for flounder its accurate up to 6 feet and i fish warm saltwater.

Rating: Best Speargun Ever Created!
Reviewer: Richard Ryan, - View all my reviews
The Mares Mini Speargun is one of the easiest, most powerful spearguns I have ever used. It is lightweight enough to be held in one hand for extensive diving, and small enough to shoot a spear into a rocky hideout, yet powerful enough to hit a fish from 10 feet and knock it down. I shot a 29 pound lingcod with this speargun, and it brought the fish down with a well-placed shot. The way the speargun is set up directly from Scuba.com is also nice. Took me about 30 minutes to set it up, and I used it the next day! Perfect! The reloader is a bit hard to use underwater, and it seems to me that there should be a better holster or keeper for it than just in the handle, where it can be lost when brushed against a rock or kelp. But overall, a great product.

Rating: Perfect size gun while lobstering
Reviewer: steve swenson,
For the past 26 years, I have been going to the keys for lobster season. We dive a few diffferent channels and carrying my rifle gun is not an option so Ive gone without. Man have I seen some huge fish!!!!! This gun is perfect for those drift dives and I dont have to swim by the monster hogfish anymore. The one thing I would suggest, is to purchase a stainless steel shaft and tip and keep the one that came with the gun as a spare. HAPPY HUNTING!!!!

Rating: Mares Mini Speargun
Reviewer: Nevin Jenkins,
This is a great product. I spearfish almost every week and it has been an asset in the rocks. It has a great deal of power however it is loud. Do not store the cocking device in the handle or you will lose it as I did and I had to make a new one. I put mine on my BC with a re-tractor.The instructions were fine no problem.

Rating: Extremely pleased

i was pleasantly surprised when i recieved this speargun today. a few things for novice speargunners (like myself):
- as youve seen this gun is operated pnumatically. however this doesnt mean that you have to "pump it" like a pellet gun every shot - the chamber is internal and it works much like a pogo stick works - so you push in the spear to "charge" up the pressure and lock the spear into place. a pump is included in the event that you begin to lose pressure over time.
- assembly: the directions are vague - it is made in italy so for the english reader the instructions are not that good. however, i will try to let you know about the assembly. the first step is to assemble the line to the gun and the arrow. first, tie it off to the tip of the gun and second you place the arrow in the very end of the gun - your first instinct is to push in the arrow and you will find that there is considerable resistance. this is not necessary (and dangerous since youre not used to the gun yet). what you need to do is just let the line retaining ring on the spear slide to the base of the spear near the tip of the gun (which sits above the spring and a metal washer). before you tie off to the spear with the line youll need to the rubber "o" ring - which is called the shock reducer. the idea here is to tie off to separate ends of the o ring with the line but to leave about 4 inches of spare line in between the knots. after youve done this properly you will notice two things: 1) you can pull the line on the spear end and the o ring will stretch without making the line taught between the two knots and 2) you can then tie it off to the spear where the line will remain taut and hold itself into place because of the o ring stretching and holding the line taught. ( if you cant figure this out email me at ra9386(@t)yahoo(d0t)com ).
after that all that is left to do is find an extra bit of string somewhere and tie off to the charging handle - the charging handle will then slide into the butt of the gun and the line will hang out so that you can easily retrieve it from inside the butt - thats it! theres no assembling the pump, etc.
other things:
the gun has a good weight, not too heavy but still a solid feel. the whole assembly is a nice short length and has open "iron" sites like a normal pistol would. the length of the line is more than enough for the speargun. the full range of the gun, arrow and line, with the arm extended is probably close to 12 feet.
all in all im pleased with what ive received. im looking forward to testing it out next week.

prior to purchasing these spear guns i read the reviews and almost decided against them...reviews said they were difficult to assemble...i am glad i decided to buy them... wasnt that difficult...the holster that straps to your leg allows both hands to be free until you spot your prey... they are very accurate and easy to re-load...everyone @ scub.com was very courtious and helpful....i will definitly use your web site for my future purchases...thanks guys

...you basically need a phd to understand the assembly directions. Now Im a very techinical person, I love puzzles and Im also an avid spearfisherman and let me tell you that the directions provided are of no help! Very confusing. Other then that its a great product and I recommend it...........if you can put it together :)

Rating: Mares Sten Blue Mini
Reviewer: richard a.,
I recently purchased this product and in my opinion got
a really nice mini spear gun that is air activated. It makes reloading a snap and not a hassle. It also looks
pretty durable and I cant wait to use it this summer.

This is a good little speargun. The compact size makes it very useful for hunting along the rocks or a reef.
Questions and Answers for Mares Sten Mini Rigged Speargun..:
Ron:
I am going to the British Virgin Islands this summer. Is a spear gun legal there? Do I need a license or etc.?
Will be on vacation and renting a boat.

Hello Ron, you would need to contact the BVI Tourist Board to find out if you need a hunting license or if it is even legal for you to hunt in there waters. Here is the link to the Tourist Board: http://www.bvitourism.com/.
park:
can spear guns such as the above be used outside of the water? Am wondering if one could spear bull frogs from a canoe with it. The shot would be straight down and at a distince of about 2 feet.
Thanks.
