I currently have Mares Volo Power fins and have just started dry suit diving. I always tended to have issues with trim - and dry suit has exacerbated (feet are too light). My instructor said ankle weights (1.5 on each), but he also said the Mares are light and can be contributing to the problem. Id prefer not to use ankle weights, but I will if thats the best suggestion. Any thoughts on fin change? Thanks! Seth
Honestly, ankle weights are a pretty good bet, but if you don''t like them (which I understand, I''m not a fan either) then getting away from the plastic fins might be the way to go. The Atomic fins are going to have very similar buoyancy characteristics to the Mares. Both should be neutral, to slightly negative in the water. If you''d like some more recommendations on potential alternate choices of fins, please feel free to give our instructors a call at email@example.com
whats the difference between the atomic adjustable strap split fins and the atomic high energy adjustable strap. is it weight? if so, whats the weights of the two different types and of the smoke on the water split fins. also are any of these 3 types neutral buoyancy or are all slightly positive? thanks very much.
i just asked a question about the differences between the various atomic split fins. thanks for your answer, but i still have a couple of questions. if the difference is stiffness, which is the most stiff and which the least? also, the answer said none are positive so to be clear, does that mean all are either neutrally buoyant or are slightly negative? my apologies for bothering you with this follow up but i want to order one of the atomic split fins and want to make sure i get the right type for me.
Hello Carolyn, all Atomic fins are negative buoyant. So if you let them go in the water they will sink as for the stiffness of the line. The most stiff out of the line is the: http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-20/014126/Atomic-Split-Adjustable-Strap-Fins.html.
How Atomic Aquatics SplitFins Work
SplitFin Wings “Slice” Through the Water
Traditional paddle fins work by pushing water rearward. As a paddle fin is pushed through the water, much of the water spills over the top surface of the blade and sticks to it, creating drag. Extra kicking effort is required to overcome that drag. The Atomic SplitFin slices through the water with two wing-shaped surfaces, creating lift and forward propulsion more like a propeller. Any water traveling over the top of the blade is funneled into and out of the opening (split) between the wings. Drag is reduced, effort is reduced, and efficiency is increased.
Propeller-Fin™ Technology Moves You Faster
Atomic Aquatics SplitFins use Propeller-Fin Technology to deliver ultra-high speeds with a small-range rapid flutter kick. This works in the same manner that increasing the RPM on a boat propeller accelerates a boat to high speeds.
Multi-Composite Plastics And Other Uniquely Atomic Features
The Atomic signature is our use of exotic materials specifically designed to improve performance. We developed multi-composite plastics for the SplitFins to maximize the efficiency of the kick with less fatigue. Flexible side rails and a stiff foot pocket are combined with stiff battens in the blade to control the flex pattern for optimum performance. Our patented EZ-LOK Buckle System is one of those distinct Atomic features that make divers love us even more.
Still among the most exciting of all recent innovations for divers, the Split Fin allows divers the most energy efficient and comfortable dives possible and leaves very little room for improvement. A statement such as that only serves as a challenge for the designers at Atomic Aquatics.
It is already known that Split Fins deliver more propulsion with less drag and kick with less effort. Reducing the stress and strain of the kick results in greater sustained speed, power and comfort. Independent testing has also confirmed that the Split Fin design significantly reduces air consumption. With that as their starting point the engineers at Atomic went to work. They designed and patented the EZ-LOK Buckle a one-touch release system that instantly and conveniently detaches the entire buckle assembly from the fin. Users can then easily re-attach the buckle without having to readjust the fin-strap, making it an ideal solution for removing the Split Fin in the water or securing it prior to entering the water.
The Atomic Aquatics Split Fin is designed to enable users to swim faster and farther while using less energy. This is accomplished through a number of innovations. This includes Atomics’ combination of highly-resilient materials and the extended Power Rail which is engineered for long-life and high function. A slightly longer blade size provides added leverage making the Split Fin ideal for divers looking to move quickly and efficiently through the water with less effort.
The unique Flex Battens in the fins' blade help users achieve the utmost performance no matter what style of kick they are using. The split design delivers better propulsion and lift, resulting in greater speeds, something divers seek when kicking into a current. Added to this is an anatomically correct foot pocket and materials used in construction to offer the diver exactly the right amount of resistance to maximize their kicking effort. Available in a variety of colors and sizes from small through X-Large Atomic Aquatics have designed a split fin that even the fish will envy.
