Rating: Mares X-Stream Adjustable Strap Fins Review - Scuba Gear Customer Reviews
Reviewer: Dawn R.
After a week of diving in Grand Cayman, (10 dives), I am completely sold on my Mares X-Stream fins. The flexibility in the design is well balanced and packs a thrust when you need it. My legs, which normally tire easily with standard fins, felt strong and I did not experience any pain in my hips or knees. My dive partner also observed that the fin has a very controlled flex point. Highly recommend these fins!

I havent used them yet - Ill use them for the first time tomorrow. I have them in blue/black though and love them. But when I saw them in PINK ... which matches all my gear ... I was ecstatic! Love the color.

Rating: Nice fin but maybe not for me
Reviewer: Sam J.  -  View all my reviews
Let me start by saying Im new to diving and going to through trial and error despite suggestions from others. For me these fins are slightly small in the foot opening but that is with 5mm booties. In addition to that the flex they have is huge. Very easy to kick with but almost too much flex for what I desire. If your legs are not strong these would be ideal, if you kick harder it feels as if you go nowhere fast.

Questions and Answers for Mares X-Stream Adjustable Strap Fins:

  • Richard:

Are the Mares X-Stream Adjustable Strap Fins sold in a right and left foot pair?

    Elliott  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Richard, There is no such declaration of a/any fin on the market conforming solely on one(1) foot or the other.

  • kirk:

I was recommended to get a regular for the avante quattro. I wear 10.5 shoes. Would this hold true for any of there fins, such as the x-streams?

    Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Yes, sizing should be the same for this Mares fin.

  • Rashidi:

Hi, Im wearing 41 shoe size(Europe). Can u help me to reccomend the Fin size and also boot size. Thanks.

    Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

41 is 10-1/2 is US sizing so 11 both in the boot and fin.

  • peter:

there are no customer reviews for this product so its hard to judge value. how much better are these than the "average fin" (around $80) and is it money well spent?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

They are a very high quality fin, but when it comes to comparing one over another it all boils down to personal opinion. The best we can offer you is that they are a very high quality product that compares to every top of the line manufacturer's product.

  • Jeffrey:

Do you have the pink with white fin for this model?

  • FRANK:

So the last time I got fins the Scuba certified Instructor stated the size I should buy and when they came in they were no were near fitting me would like to try this on open toe fins. I have Waterproof MED/LARGE boots what size should I order for fins. This fin in particular.

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Frank, you are going to want to order the size fin in the size of your boot (or size range) of your boot.

  • Julie:

with the Mares x stream fins, are boots required or optional.

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Julie, they are required. With the adjustable strap fins the foot pocket is design for a boot.

  • dessy:

Hi, im wearing 37 shoes (european size), and i want to buy this fin, which size should i choose?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

According to several shoe size conversion charts we found, that Eu. size equated into a size 5 US shoe size. The smallest size this fin is made in would be US 6-9. With your shoe size we'd recommend going with the smallest size.

  • Enrique:

I were 10 1/2 tenis or shoes, so I have to pick 11 boots and shocks, but my question is: Which fins size I have to choose, 9-11 or 11-13?

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Enrique, I would suggest going with the size 9-11 but if your boots are a hard sole boot then go with the size 11-13 since the hard sole takes up more space in the foot pocket.

  • Tim:

I have been diving with the Aqualung Slingshots for the last 3 years, but have been looking at other fins. How does the Mares X-treme fin compare to the slingshot?

    Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

These are also a great fin. They aren''t going to have the same flex though.

  • A.J.:

Hi there, I just tried these fins on at a local shop and found that the regular fit best. I want to order but am concerned about your size chart. It has XS/S, S/M, M/L but the actual fins are sized with those sizes being totally separate eg an extra small is not the same as a small. I just need to know that if I order regular (which is their version of medium) I dont end up with a large. Sorry just had this problem with a dive vest because the size chart did not match the manufacturer sizes.

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello A.J., if you are looking at the regular size fin you are going to want to order the size 9-11 men size. Mares is made in Italy so they stamp there fins in Europe sizing but the 9-11 is the regular size in that fin.

  • howard:

I have new question... Is there a color combo that might be less inviting to a predator since California seals are brown and blackish in color? Or would it look more like a great, tasty bait fish?

    Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello, Science has not been able to determine whether or not sharks can see colors. The ''Brightness'' of certain colors has also not been scientifically determined to be a shark attractant, but some scientists have called international orange (the color of life vests) "yum yum orange'' for sharks. Sharks have been prove to be attracted to shiny, flashy objects that give the appearance of light glinting off fish scales. Great whites feed on seals. Surfers in wet suits can resemble seals, but if sharks can see colors, we all know there are no red seals. So, unless you have a neon traction pad, you are probably in no jeopardy. If you wear a watch brushed metal or flat black are better choices than polished metal - gold or silver colored.

  • kyungah:

I want red xs size. Can get you there?

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

At the current time we only have these available in the SM,M/L, and XL sizes.

  • James:

I have been diving Aqualung Hotshots and have generally found them to be pretty nice. I think I would like to try a larger fin. I was hoping for the istructors opinions as to Mares X-stream and the Mares Avanti Quattro and Avanti Quattro Plus.

    Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello, the x-streams are top of the line when it comes to mares fins. They did a lot of R&D in it''s development. I personally dive the basic Avanti Quattro''s and love the ABS buckles. All the fin you really need.

  • hoon:

    can you recommand pin size? woman(240mm,US 7), man(260mm, US8)

    Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Each fin has a listing of sizes in the "Options" drop down box for ordering size and color that equates to US shoe sizing. based on the info you have offered us both divers would wear the SM size fin.

  • David:

How long are the SCUBA Snorkeling SWIM Mares X-Stream Fins Size EXTRA-LARGE Mans 10-13 need to fit in my pack Thanks

  • Burke:

I am looking at getting these for my Girlfriend, she wears a 9.5, I have already purchased the Mares 5mm Classic Medium Sole Zipper Dive Boots and was wondering if I should stick with the Womens 7-10 or go for the 10+ because of the boot? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hello Burke, no the size 7-10 is the size you are going to want to use with your boot. That size will give you a better fit.

  • Alex:

I have a pair of Mares Triboot 5 Neoprene boots, size 9. These are a hard bottom boot and want to double check on what fin size (Mares X-Stream) I should get. Please advise, Alex

    Chance  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

Hi Alex, if you have a hard sole boot i would recommend the size 9-11.

  • Jonathan:

I wear size 9 shoes, should I get the size 6-9 or the size 9-11 in those fins? Thank you!

    Arthur  (Certified Scuba Instructor at

    go with the 6-9''s

Sizes: S-R-XL
Blade: 37cm
Material: Thermoplastic Rubber/Technopolymers

Product Features

Channel Thrust: Soft longitudinal inserts allow a controlled deformation of the fin blade while kicking. This channel shape moves a greater amount of water resulting in more thrust for the same effort. Mares design is inspired by marine mammals.

Latest development in Channel Thrust is the Superchannel. The blade is designed with a large flexible central Superchannel propelling water-flow more effi ciently down the fin blade instead of letting it spill over the sides for optimal performance and minimal diver effort. The limiting factors in traditional open heel foot pockets are their weight and the “parachute effect”.

When finning, water gets into the space between the bootie and the foot pocket, creating drag like the air in a parachute. The perforations prevent this and have the additional benefit of making the foot pocket very soft and flexible. Furthermore, the suction effect which can make doffing of the fins cumbersome, is now forever a thing of the past.

OPB - Optimized Pivoting Blade: Allows the blade to maintain an optimal angle throughout the kicking cycle, whereas traditional fins achieve this only during a small portion of the cycle. OPB produces a constant thrust, which minimizes fatigue and produces fluid movement through the water.

Riddled Foot Pocket: The perforations prevent stagnating water flow from slowing you down. Eliminating this “parachute effect” you’ll slide faster through the water. Furthermore the openings eliminate any suction effect, making doffing easier.

Tri-Material Construction: 3 specific materials for maximum elasticity, high durability and resistance to aging. The result is superior performance in all diving conditions.

ABS Plus Buckles: These unique, patented buckles are the most simple and easy to use buckles available in the market. It only takes one quick movement to easily open or close the buckle, even when wearing thick neoprene gloves. The double button release prevents the buckle from accidentally opening.

Open Heel Foot Pockets: The open heel foot pocket is designed to accommodate dive boots with a sole, and to offer excellent adherence between the boot and the foot pocket in order to transfer all the force exerted by the leg to the blade, without sacrificing yield yet still ensuring superior comfort.

The lower section of the foot pocket is longer, in order to better transfer power to the blade and minimize the risk of cramping. In addition, the inside of the foot-pocket features internal ribbing to improve fit and stiffen the sole.
