Rating: Great BC for the price
Reviewer: Gary Thuillier
I had ordered this BCD from a photo of what was apparently last years model (OceanPro 1000) then while waiting for shipment which was backordered I noticed a change in the catalogue. I was quite pleased when I received the new QLR4. This is toted as a perfect rental unit which is normally taken as no bells or whistles and typically a cheap product. Not so! It is a heavy duty vest but not so cumbersome and stiff as many of the other more expensive models. I have to say for the first time in my 24 years of diving I have found a BCD with pockets that are actually functional underwater. Ive worn out 4 other vests over the years and on none of them, could you find a way into the pocket during a dive without having your buddy do it for you. As for cheap (quality) the D-rings are plastic instead of SS but I have yet to break a plastic ring on any of my older rigs. This vest could use 2 more of those at the bottom of the pockets, something I solved by sliding a flexible rod between the layers of the pocket and air bladder and a brass ring, which I use as a lower anchor point for a small pony bottle. Now it is fully customized to my needs for the price of just $249.95. Oh! Did I forget to mention the price jumped from there to well over $350 while I was waiting for my order. Lucky me!! I can only assume that the special catalogue price signaled the end of the product line and since they were obligated to the order I got a new model instead. In short, even at the new price it is still a fantastic BCD-great fit, highly adjustable and comfortable-good access and location of dump valves, good polymer rings. Buy it!!!!

Questions and Answers for Oceanic OceanPro QLR 4 BC:

  • lenny:

whats the difference between this and the Oceanic Oceanpro Scuba BC

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

This is the most current version of the Oceanic Oceanpro bcd. The differences between the 1000D and the older version is a slightly more comfortable cut and the use of heavier, more durable nylon in the construction of the newer model.

  • Garth:

Has the BC auto inflate issue been corrected in the newer valves?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Garth, this is not an auto inflate system designed into this BCD. If you need to inflate this BCD you will need to press the inflate or deflate button on the power inflator. If you have any other questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822.

  • Garth:

I should have said unplanned/inadvertent inflation. I replaced one under warranty and it did it again thus I bought one thru you

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Garth, it could be you use your inflator alot when your underwater. If you do you can get salt, sand, dirt, build up in there that could make the buttons stick. You should rinse your gear in clean fresh water. If you have any other questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822

  • Dave:

How much does it weigh (without weight pockets)? I travel a lot so Im considering this vs. one specifically designed (or labeled) for travel.

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Depending upon the size, this bcd would weigh between 8 and 10 pounds.

  • Bryan:

I am a little confused what the weight pocket is. Does it come with the integrated weight system and this weight pocket is a add-on to carry more weight, or is the weight pocket actually the integrated weight system and you cant add weight to the BC without the pockets?

Chance  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The optional weight pockets is the integrated weight system.

  • Tommy:

Does this BCD come with the low pressure inflator hose?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Tommy, yes this BCD will come with the power inflator hose.

  • Tom:

In regards to the weight pockets...where do I go to purchase weights that fit in this BC, and what is the maximum weight I could use in it? Ive never used an integrated BC like this, only weight belts for weight.

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Tom, you can get weight for this at: http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-154/046022/XS-Scuba-Lead-Shot-Weight.html. As for weight this BC will hold 20 lbs 10 lbs on each side.

  • Mike:

The picture on your site looks completely different than the photo on the Oceanic website. Is there a newer or older version? Does your item have pockets?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Mike, thank you for pointing this out. Yes we have last year model picture being displayed. If you go to: http://www.oceanicworldwide.com/us/bcds/oceanpro-1000d-872/ you will see the current look of the BCD.

Please will I have to add a weight to BC before I use it and also I want to know if a BC can be used in a surface demand diving with kb Morgan 37 helmet, thanks

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Onyige, yes you would have to add weight to the BC if you need weight. This BC does not come with weight. As for this working with KM 37 as long as you have the power inflator hose connected to the surface supplied air yes you will be able to inflate this while you are under water.

Patented QLR (Quick Lock & Release) Weight Integration System
The OceanPro 1000D may be purchased with or without Oceanic's patented QLR Quick Lock & Release System. If you choose not to buy them with your BC, you will have 2 additional storage pockets and may add the QLR Weight Pockets at any time. Your weights stay in position throughout the dive and do not shift around affecting buoyancy or position in the water. The weight pouches are simple to load and easy to release. Best of all, our patented 'positive-lock' system helps to ensure that they'll stay put.

Fadeless 500 Denier Ballistic Nylon Construction
The OceanPro 1000D air cell is welded from a fadeless 500 denier nylon. Exterior abrasion points are covered in our fadeless 1600 denier ballistic nylon - tough stuff that will hold up to years of extreme diving and keep that 'new look' longer.

Alliance Integrated Inflator
Ergonomically designed to be functional and easy to use in any dive position, the Alliance Integrated Inflator provides a full range of airway exhaust/inflation control. Simply press a button to produce precise flow for trimming dive attitude or maximum flow for major changes in buoyancy. A large exhaust valve creates a flow rate higher than the inflation rate of the power inflator, improving diver control during ascents.

Adjustable Cummerbund
Oceanic's cummerbund offers up to 8' of adjustment to fit a wide range of sizes. For additional customization, the cummerbund may be easily changed with another size.

Padded Backpack
Extra heavy duty padding provides comfort both above and below the surface without having to sacrifice the stability of a hard backpack.

2 Large Main Pockets
Enough room to store your OceanPro 1000D Light, extra Shadow Mask, Pocket Snorkel, or P.S.D.!

Optional Air XS 2 Alternate Inflator
The AIR XS 2 combines the reliability, performance and durability of the SlimLine OCTOPUS and ALLIANCE INFLATOR into one very low profile, streamlined package. The regulator/inflator combination is as small as many BC inflators alone, with breathing performance superior to many stand-alone octopus regulators.

The AIR XS 2 can be added to any existing Oceanic BC or may be purchased already installed on a new Oceanic BC for additional savings.
