Rating: Nice entry dive computer
Reviewer: Michael Dyer
I purchased this right before my last open water certification dive. Everything worked great and I really loved the option to download your dive profile and see it graphed out on the included software. You can even upload and keep track of your dives on movescount.com online community which is pretty cool. The strap is rather long, even when I have my 5 mm so I trimmed it but if your using a 7mm or dry suit youd probably want the extra length.

Questions and Answers for Suunto Vyper Wrist Computer:

  • Tamarinera:

Does this computer have the digital compass? There seem to be several different "Vypers". Thanks.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

No the Vyper does not have the digital compass. Cobra 3, DX, D9tx do include the digital compass.

  • Richard:

can this unit ship to Australia?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

You can place the order on the website. Using Amazon Checkout is the easiest way to process international orders. The shipping charge will be listed when you proceed to checkout and prior to submitting the order.

  • Kevin:

It says to look to bottom at check out for PC dive log, but there is nothing there or at checkout? thanks

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

At this time the Vyper is coming with the download kit included. (Be aware this is an ongoing data base and that could change at any time)

  • Michael:

I know this question is relative. But are dive computers like this one worth the cost for someone thats just finishing up OW certification and getting into the sport? I am planning on taking the advanced course next.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Spending the money now is better than getting something you'll just want to upgrade in a year. I got a higher end dive computer when I was 12 years old am still using it. Remember the function of a dive computer is longer safer bottom times at all the recreational depths. Over time it will easily pay for itself compared to using gauges.

  • Michael:

So which is better a console computer or wrist? I just purchased my reg and console with standard gauges and was thinking of leaving that is and having the wrist mount. Also is this particular model a good one? I was looking at this and also the ZOOP but I like the backlight on this one since we will be doing a night dive in advanced class.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

These are both great computers. The back lite is great for night dives because your dive light is so bright looking at the computer you can't see it or the reflection blinds you. The wrist mount is a good idea because you'll never "go fishing" for your gauge or computer.

  • Ranbo:

Is the backlight always on when the computer is on? Or can it be manually switched on? Any experience with battery life ?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

It is only on when the button is activated while the unit is pressurized underwater.
