Rating: Sealife DC1400 Camera works great, easy to use
Reviewer: John F.
This camera is designed for underwater use and is simple and easy to use for someone who just wants to get decent pictures of everything on your dive. The automatic underwater color/white balance adjustments modes work very well. The design makes it quick and easy to change the settings you might need to change underwater with simple and large buttons. You can quickly change things like flash modes, marcro, etc. without going through a extra steps as you might with conventional cameras in a special case. The buttons are all right there on the back and clearly labeled, and you can operate it with one hand and change settings quickly. I did not get the external flash option and plan on adding that. Using the cameras built flash tends to put a haze in the middle of the picture in slighly murky water. It does pretty good in ambient light down to about 50-60 depending on water clarity, but at those depths there is not much left but blue light. I also plan to get a spare battery/charger. It will last through one full dive shooting lots of pictures and video, but not two full dives.

Rating: Sealife DC1400 purchase
Reviewer: Christopher C.
I had an older dc500, with the single external strobe flash, but I damaged the camera screen by carrying it in my pocket with the slim case. With the new DC1400, I also needed the new housing because the inside cameras are different. Now the old housing is obsolete. I was able to rif the old flash to work with the new housing by re-running the fiber optic cable to the new ring. At least this was a good aspect about use of previous purchase. The new housing is nice with the larger buttons, so I am happy with it. The built-in Sealife settings in the cameras are also very nice once you get used to them. Since the strobe is ever so slightly delayed by its optical pickup method, setting the mode to external flash is essential for flash timimg. Also the color correction settings for the blue of the underwater light works beautifully as designed. Some of the menus are a little tricky for the purpose of housing button use, and differ from the old 500 (as expected) so some study was required before the first trip. Depending on the light and the settings, I did have some difficulty capturing rapidly moving fish up close, but that is more familiarity on my part than the fault of the camera. I also blame the fish for moving around too fast. What did work very well was video. The battery life seems good, especially if you follow the first charging cycle directions. Also it is nice that you can charge the battery in the camera with a simple USB cable. I did get a spare battery and charger since a day of diving on a boat doesnt,t often allow charging. This helped on a long day of diving, but was not as essential as it had been with the DC500 regarding battery dying mid-dive or mid boat-trip. Overall, this is a nice upgrade for me, and consistent with the Sealife camera value proposition. The custom camera settings specicially for underwater use really assist in getting quality pictures and videos underwater without having to be an expert. The housings are not too bulky, and straight forward to maintain and assure a good seal. The camera is even very nice with sufficient zoom for surface intervals too. Just remember to change the settings appropriately for no flash delay and no blue color correction.

This has been a good camera to begin my underwater photography with. The different white balance settings do take some getting use to. I look forward to using it in deeper, clearer, and blue waters soon.

Rating: So far so good
Reviewer: Lenard Boultbee
We bought this camera recently and it works great above water, however, we have not had the chance to use it underwater though. The only thing that could be improved is there is a delay from when you push the buttom to when the camera takes the photo.. could pose a problem if you only have a split second to take a photo.

Rating: I couldnt be Happier with this Camera!
Reviewer: Michael T.
i had been researching underwater cameras for about 8 months for my 10 day trip to maui. i wanted something good for snorkeling. well my research paid off. this camera is great! awesome video even when not in the best lighting. never had issues with battery life. quite the opposite. i would tape all day then play back what i taped and at the end of the day the battery was still at 3/4 charge. the size is perfect. its easy to handle (nice rubbery case) and the piano keys make it so easy navigate the menus underwater. i used the easy setup for snorkeling in 25 feet or less of green water and the video came out better than what i actually witnessed. btw no external lighting was necessary for snorkeling in maui. this camera is very intuitive. it only took me about 5-10 minutes to learn how to navigate all the menus. here are some video clips i took (remember this is my first attempt at filming underwater). http://youtu.be/vsgftq1li

Rating: review for dc1400 underwater camera
Reviewer: Frank Gomolcak  -  View all my reviews
Great camera for taking clear and sharp pictures above and below the water. Features are understood easily. Housing is sturdy as well as reliable. I tried to maintain it as much as i can however during my last snorkeling trip i placed the camera inside the housing and removed it several times in the same day without a proper cleaning. Never had a problem.

Rating: Great Service!
Reviewer: Pamela F.
I ordered this camera and had it shipped to my son in Northern Canada and it arrived on time and intact. He is delighted with the camera which he chose after researching many products both on line and in store. While he could have purchased the same camera in store, it was significantly cheaper to buy on line even with the shipping costs.

Got this camera just before trip to Cayman Islands. Im new at underwater photos and it took a little getting used to. Make sure battery is fully charged before going in. You need the light attachment for good photos. Pictures closer than 5 feet came out great. Takes excellent land photos and is easy to operate. Other than battery having a short charge span at break in. Camera works fine.

  • alexandra:

hi so im trying to figure out which camera is better for diving between the sealife and the olympus tough? is there any difference in white balance between the two... or quality of pictures and video in general?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Alexandra, the tough is going to be a more compact unit. But with the DC 1400 you get 14 megapixel vs the tough 12 megapixel. They both do HD video and stills. I think the Sealife camera takes better pictures from what I have seen on the net. Plus all of the add on's you can get with the DC1400 that you just don't get with the tough. If you would like to place an order or have any other questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822.

  • Michael:

What are the differences between the Sealife DC1200 and the DC1400? Thank you.

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The DC 1400 offers HD Video as well as 14 megapixel still images.

  • Amber:

Does the SeaLife DC1400 come with the underwater case hardware.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The DC 1400 Camera comes with the underwater housing and the inner camera. It also has all the accessories needed to download your pictures to a PC computer.

  • Jessica:

Do I need an underwater case for this camera, or can I simply take it underwater without one?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Jessica, looking at the picture the camera is already inside the housing. So no when you get this camera you get both the camera and housing. So when you are at the surface you can take the camera out of the housing or leave it in. It will take the same quality picture in or out of the housing. If you have any other questions or would like to place an order please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822.

  • Diane:

How cold can the water be for this camera? Ive seen some that say as cold as 14 degrees F.

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Operating Temp. 33 degrees F to 110 degrees F for the underwater housing.

  • Mark:

Does this camera require an additional housing or can you take underwater as is?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The DC1400 is a digital camera in a housing designed to work with it. It comes complete ready to take into the water.

  • Nontakorn:

    1. Do I need to buy the video and flash for the DC1400 if I dive between 20-30m daylight time? And does the flash help?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

For the best colors in your pictures using a strobe or viddeo light works best. If the water is very clear and you are shallow the camera alone can be used. You can always add a strobe if the camera only, is not giving you the colors you want.

  • Daniel:

This camera works with Sandisk Extreme SDHC, UHS-1, 45mb/s (300x)16gb, 3D/class 10 memory card?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Daniel, the card need to be a SDHC class 10 card.

Daniel  (Customer & Owner of this Product):

I see, so this one doesnt work? there is another card, its the sandisk ultra 16gb, SDHC class 10.
