Rating: Very Nice Computer
Reviewer: Jeff Hemsath  -  View all my reviews
First dive with computer was great. So many options! Take the class! There is so much info you should learn prior to use. Pre set everything then dive. Computer logs it all for you. It has options that you can use under water. Just scroll through screens. HUGE screen. Visible in bad conditions, big numbers, flashing red light for quick rise. Easy to read graphs, going to take class again to relearn what I forgot. Compass is installed for easy usage. Quick connect is great for storage. CONS... no light weight hose available without changing quick connect. Temp is logged as coldest only (I think, still learning).

this is to be used as a spare one for me or a complete unit dive regulator, spare regulator and dive computer, by my wife when she dives. i have an earlier model and it seems to work just fine. mine is the detachable unit. it works fine but i wonder if it could become detached during use if it came in contact with objects. just wishing for a lock ring or something with mine.

Reviewer: Carolyn L.  -  View all my reviews
Just upgraded my 12 year old Oceanic computer. I love these Oceanics because of the large digital readout....BUT I love the new Oceanic computer because there are many more features on one window, unlike before. I used to have to change windows to see TIME.........now the added features or Temperature, added compass, No Deco and Current Time are on one window........its smaller, lighter, and more compact!!!!!!!!!!....plus, you can now detach the computer from the hose when traveling..........a great computer for those who cant read small digital readouts!!!!! I just got back from Belize and did several dives. This computer is great. It took the guess work out of everything. I dont have experience with other computers to compare it to but I cant imagine needing much more. The only downside is the cost of the USB cable and software to upload the dive information. The back light worked great during my night dive.

This computer is an upgrade from an older Oceanic Data Pro Plus 2 computer. It functions very much the same but is air integrated. I really like the larger screen. My previous computer lasted several years and dives, and I would expect the same of this. Scuba.com was outstanding in preparing and shipping my computer in a timely fashion.

what can I say? This is a great product and the price cannot be beat!! It would be nice if the manufacture included the data cable but seeing as I saved so much on the computer, the extra for the cable was no big deal. I love doing business with Scuba.com!

Questions and Answers for Oceanic Datamax Pro Plus 2.1 Air / Nitrox Integrated Computer with Compass:

  • paul:

Good evening, I am looking for a new dive computer. I have been diving a mares rgbm mc1 that is not air integrated for years. I have enjoyed the computer, but when I bought it, I planned on buying the USB cable as I got close to filling the log. However when that happened, no one carried the cable anymore. So now I am looking to replace it. I am looking to be in the 600 range and wanted a recommendation. Here are the most important features to me: 1. User replacable batteries preferably with hot swap so that I do not lose information. 2. Pc downloadable with a big enough log for an extended dive trip away from the computer, preferably 30+ log. 3. Nitrox compatibility 4. Quick release 5. Compass I have narrowed it down to 3 computers and wanted to know the differences and if you had any recommendations. Those 3 are: 1. Oceanic data Max pro 2.1 (I also wanted to know why you show this computer 2x on your site. One with a retail of 719 and a sale price of 689. The second has a retail of 859 and a sale price of 599) 2. Aeris atmos AI 3. Mares puck I am looking for this computer to last me hopefully for 10+ years. What is your recommendation? Thanks, Paul

Clarke  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Paul, Thank you for your inquiry I am recommending the Aeris Atmos AI Air/Nitrox Dive Computer with Compass and Quick Disconnect. Not only for the price but for the features and benefits of a fully air-integrated computer, a compass, quick disconnect and a large easy to read screen, boasting a complete console with a small footprint. You can also order the optional Aeris Dive Computer Interface Cable which allows you to down load the dives into a PC and/or lap top. Please note, prices and availability may vary. http://www.scuba.com/scuba-gear-16/009042/Aeris-Atmos-AI-Air---Nitrox-Dive-Computer-v.2.html If you have other questions, need help or would like to place an order, please contact SCUBA.com by calling 800-247-2822 <> 949-221-9300 or e-mail us at: info@scuba.com

  • Peter:

I am a new to diving. My wife bought me a air nitrox computer. Can I use it for just air or do I need a different computer?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Peter, the default setting is for air. If you do decide to go Nitrox you will need to enter the % of O2 before each dive. If you have any other questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.800.347.2822.

  • Jim:

This product appears to be listed twice with a price difference of approximately $90. What am i missing? The Cobalt is listed first and then two consecutive listings for the Oceanic Datamax Pro Plus 2.1. Help?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

One is only with computer and compass, no quick disconnect.

  • Rick:

What is the difference between the Oceanic pro plus computer for 599.95 and the one for 689.95 besides the price? Thanks

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

The $599.95 is computer and compass no quick disconnect.

  • Sherry:

is there a difference betwee the Oceanic Datamax Pro Plus 2.1 and the Oceanic Pro Plus 2.1 (the word "Datamax" is not in the title?

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Sherry, they are both the same computer. The DataMax is the newest version of the computer.

  • JAMES:

Does this model have quick disconnect, safty stop count down timer, air consumption capabilties? What do the customable alams consist of? How many can be put into the comp.?

Bob  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

This particular model does not come with the quick disconnect. The other features are normal features to most all air integrated dive computers and are included in Oceanic''s. The customizable alarms are audio and visual both and can be set for turn around gas, time, depth, and other user settable choices.

  • Mark:

Reference the Oceanic DataMax Pro Plus 2.1, does it have sea and fresh water settings?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Because this has Automatic Altitude Adjustment feature it will adjust for the salt or fresh.

  • mark:

    This computer comes complete w/compass?

Bill  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Console With Download Kit, Compass and Quick Disconnect

  • Terrie:

I have a Sherwood Wisdom 3 wplus compass. I love it. This oceanic datamax pro plus 2.1 air/nitrox, is it just as good? We are beginners and need one for my husband. Give me your input on what you suggest. Thanks,

Darrick  (Certified Scuba Instructor at Scuba.com):

Hello Terrie, both computer are excellent computer to have. They both will do everything that you need to dive. Since you already have a Sherwood Wisdom I would suggest going with that version since you are already know how to work the computer and the download cable would work for both computers. If you went with the Oceanic computer you would need a separate download cable for the new computer.

Air Time Remaining
The Air Time Remaining feature calculates current depth, tank pressure, your breathing rate, ascent time, and decompression status to tell you exactly how much time you can remain underwater. The Pro Plus 2.1 continually displays Air Time Remaining via a numerical bar graph in addition to cylinder pressure. You may also display Air Time Remaining in oversized digits at any time with the press of a button.

Dive Time Remaining
Dive Time Remaining, like Air Time Remaining provides a 'real' number in minutes. This calculation combines Air Time Remaining, Nitrogen and Oxygen absorption, displaying whichever allows less time.

Choose Your Dive Mode Display
The new Pro Plus 2.1 is as versatile underwater as it is topside. Upon starting your dive, the Pro Plus 2.1 will simply display your current depth, how long you can stay there and cylinder pressure. While many divers have asked for such simplicity and ease of use, you know that with all the Pro Plus 2.1's features, there must be more. And there is. Simply press the button to see more information. Is this information important to you on a full time basis? Leave it there. Just want to check it and then move on to another display? You can do that too. It's up to you and your new Pro Plus 2.1.

Oversized Digits
Take the Oceanic challenge: When shopping for a new dive computer, compare the displays. When it comes to viewing critical information, which would you rather see at 100 feet?

Water or Manual Activation
Is it a good idea to check your computer before entering the water? You bet. Could you forget to activate your computer? Sure. The Pro Plus 2.1 features push-button or automatic activation, triggered by water contact. A benefit of push-button activation is easily verifying operation and cylinder pressure, but in case you forget, or simply choose not to activate your computer, it can be as simple as jumping in the water.

Audible Alarms with Flashing LED Warning Light
The Pro Plus 2.1 features a variety of system and user-customized audible alarms, alerting you to situations that pose a potential danger, or simply serve as a convenient reminder.

Audible Alarm Acknowledgement™
Have you ever had difficulty hearing your computer’s audible alarm? Perhaps that little beep signifying a potentially dangerous situation was timed perfectly with some large exhaust bubbles rushing past your ears. Or maybe it seemed to be insignificant as that huge manta ray soared overhead. You won’t miss the Pro Plus 2.1’s audible alarm. Once triggered, the alarm will sound continuously for 10 seconds. We know what you’re thinking… “That’s nice, I’ll definitely hear the alarm, but isn’t that going to annoy me and everyone else in the water?” We thought of that too. The alarm’s job is to get your attention so that you look at the computer. Once it does that, simply press the button and it will stop. You’re a responsible diver and Oceanic treats you that way. If you really want to exceed your pre-set maximum depth alarm by a couple of feet to capture that award-winning photograph – go ahead!

Air or Nitrox
The Pro Plus 2.1 acts simply as an ‘Air’ computer until you tell it otherwise, whether that is this weekend or 2 years down the road. As your training and experience grow, the Pro Plus 2.1 is designed to grow with you, being easily programmed for Nitrox mixtures from 21% to 50%.

Oceanic Personal Dive Computer Algorithm
Decompression theory can be trusted only as far as it has been demonstrated by actual test dive data. In 1987 a unique series of experiments were conducted by Diving Science and Technology (DSAT). Commissioned by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), these Doppler ultrasound monitored human experiments conducted by Dr. Michael Powell produced the most comprehensive data set that exists for recreational divers to this day. These data were used to validate the PADI Recreational Dive Planner and are the basis of the algorithm used in all Oceanic Personal Dive Computers (PDCs).

'The ultimate adjustable algorithm.' That's the way divers, instructors and Oceanic Pro Dealers refer to Oceanic PDCs. Our color-coded bar graphs provide complete control of your margin of safety for each dive. Want to be a bit more cautious? Make it a personal rule to never enter into the yellow caution zone, or stay one pixel away, or – you get the point. Now you can even program several of our PDCs to do it for you with our patent pending Nitrogen Bar Graph Alarm; set it once and let your computer alert you when your bar graph reaches that level.

Automatic Safety Stop Prompt
A brief audible and visual alarm remind you as you approach 15 feet. An automatic 3-minute timer counts down to zero. As in any other dive mode, you still have access to other pieces of information, and there is no penalty should you choose to disregard the safety stop.

FastSet™ Menu System
Speed through menu items and set modes easily and quickly with Oceanic’s FastSet Menu and intuitive dual button operation.

Date and Time Stamp
The Pro Plus 2.1 features time of day on the surface as well as underwater for quick reference. Time and date stamp also helps you to easily identify specific dives in Log Mode or PC download memory.

User Friendly Mode Icons
All Oceanic computers feature bar graphs and universal icons that help you to quickly understand the information displayed on the screen at a glance.

Graphic User Interface™
Using the recognizable logic of green, yellow and red color-coding in conjunction with bar graphs, the diver has at-a-glance information. As easy to understand as a traffic light, the Graphic Diver Interface helps you to easily monitor No-Decompression status, Oxygen Accumulation, Ascent Rate, and Air Time Remaining.

Automatic Altitude Compensation
All Oceanic computers automatically compensate for altitude up to 14,000 feet, giving adjusted no-decompression times and depths. They even automatically recalibrate the depth display for freshwater instead of seawater.

Diver-Replaceable Batteries
All Oceanic computers feature diver replaceable batteries. This can be a real trip-saver on board a live-aboard boat!

Battery Hot Swap™
An added benefit to diver replaceable batteries. The “hot-swap” feature allows you to change batteries between dives while maintaining all calculations.

24-Hour Fly Countdown and Calculated Desaturation Time
The Pro Plus 2.1 features both a dual 12-hour countdown timer and calculated Desaturation Time, the theoretical time required to off-gas all residual nitrogen at sea level.

Variable Ascent Rate Indicator™
Some computers simply flash an icon, telling you that you’re ascending too quickly. The Pro Plus 2.1’s Variable Ascent Rate Indicator bar graph acts as a speedometer, allowing you to very precisely control your ascent rate via the green, yellow, and red bar graph.

Depth-Dependent Ascent Rate
The Pro Plus 2.1 features a depth-dependant ascent rate, allowing increased rates at deeper depths and providing additional safety as you near the surface.

SmartGlo® Backlighting
Want to verify your set mode options before your night dive? Press the side button to activate the backlight and go ahead! A small photo-sensor in the face of the Pro Plus 2.1 analyzes the intensity of ambient light each time another button is pressed. If it’s dark, SmartGlo backlighting will be there for you when you need it, and it will preserve battery life when you don’t.

24 Dive On-Unit Log Book
The Pro Plus 2.1 features on-unit data storage capacity for 24 dives. Date and time stamp makes locating and viewing a specific dive quick and easy.

Optional OceanLog® PC Interface
The Pro Plus 2.1 features a watertight, plug-in serial connection for fast and reliable PC download. Optional OceanLog software provides intuitive post-dive analysis and logging. You have the option to add and/or edit many pieces of information to customize your log book, with data such as depth and decompression status during a dive, maximum depth, bottom time, air consumption, air time remaining, no-decompression status, descent and ascent rate, surface interval, and any violations recorded automatically.

Optional PC Upload
In addition to detailed dive analysis, the optional OceanLog PC Interface also allows you to quickly and easily set all of your Pro Plus 2.1 settings and options directly through your PC.

Advanced Dive Planning Simulator
While Oceanic manuals and cue cards are simple to understand, some people learn better through hands-on experience. The on-unit Simulator Mode allows you to run the Pro Plus 2.1 through actual dive profiles including Air Dive, Nitrox, Gauge Mode, and Decompression. You will see the dive happen on the screen as you would in the water. Air consumption calculations may be activated, using a pre-set rate. As you dive the Pro Plus 2.1, the simulated consumption rate will be updated to reflect your own average.

While this is not a substitute for reading and understanding your Owners Guide, it provides detailed dive planning, is an excellent auxiliary learning tool, and it is a great way to refresh your memory on the way to the dive site, particularly if you have not been diving for a while. A side benefit is that you can always show your dive buddy what a cool new dive computer you have!

Extended Range Gauge Mode
Divers using advanced breathing gas mixtures or otherwise conducting planned dives beyond the operational limits of the computer may utilize the Pro Plus 2.1 as an advanced air integrated digital depth gauge and bottom timer with detailed PC Interface.

Split Set Mode Access
With a computer as advanced as the Pro Plus 2.1, you may have to push a lot of buttons to personalize it just the way you want. We have split the set mode into two separate menus. Set Mode 1 includes Nitrox mix, maximum depth alarm, and other options that may change from dive to dive. Set Mode 2 includes units of measurement, PC sampling rate, and other personal preferences that will most likely be set once and forgotten.

USER SETTINGS AND OPTIONS

Turn-Around Pressure Alarm
The 'Turn-Around' Pressure Alarm is a unique patent-pending feature that allows you to pre-program an audible reminder when you reach 1000 to 3000 psi in 250 psi increments. This helps ensure that you return to your exit point with plenty of air.

Ending Pressure Alarm
Air Time Remaining calculations are based on the 'Ending' Pressure Alarm. You define how much air you want in reserve upon reaching the surface.

Maximum Depth Alarm
The Maximum Depth Alarm provides an audible warning upon reaching your planned maximum depth. This is an important safety feature for deeper dives or less experienced divers, and it comes in handy for rebreather diving where you can pre-set another level of safety.

Elapsed Dive Time Alarm
You’re on a boat trip and the captain says, “Dive your own profiles, but be back in an hour – we’re having lunch!” Just set your Pro Plus 2.1 to alert you when your elapsed dive time reaches one hour.

Units of Measurement
Choose between Metric and Imperial settings for depth and pressure.

12/24 Hour Time Format
Choose between 12 or 24 hour time format, independent of Units of Measurement.

Date and Time of Day
The Pro Plus 2.1 displays time of day on the surface as well as underwater for quick reference. Time and date stamp helps you to easily identify specific dives in On-Unit Log Mode or PC download memory.

Audible Alarm and Flashing LED Warning Light On/Off
You may choose to deactivate all audible and LED alarms.

Nitrogen Tissue Loading Bar Graph Alarm
Many divers have claimed in the past that Oceanic’s Nitrogen bar graph design provides the ultimate user-adjustable computer. Want to be a bit more cautious? Make it a personal rule to never enter into the yellow caution zone, or stay one pixel away, or – you get the point. Now you can program the Pro Plus 2.1 to do it for you. Set it once and let your computer alert you when your bar graph reaches a pre-determined level.

Dive Time Remaining
Dive Time Remaining provides a ‘real’ number in minutes. This calculation considers both Nitrogen and Oxygen absorption, displaying whichever allows less time. With this unique Pro Plus 2.1 feature, you are able to program an audible alarm to alert you upon reaching a pre-set number in minutes.

Maximum PO2 Level (Nitrox)
When diving Nitrox, do you prefer your maximum PO2 exposure to be 1.2 ATA? 1.6 ATA? Depending on where you learned and your own personal comfort zone, the answer may be very different from diver to diver. The Pro Plus 2.1 lets you set your own limit. Program an audible alarm to sound at the level that you prefer.

FO2 50% Default On/Off
Following a Nitrox dive, many dive computers calculate your next dive based on a “worse-case scenario”, mix of 50% Oxygen and 79% Nitrogen should you forget to reset your actual mix. With FO2 50% Default OFF, your mix remains at the original set point until you change it again.

SmartGlo® Backlight Duration
Would you like the backlight to shut off as soon as you release the button? Would you rather it remain on for 0, 3, or 7 seconds? We don’t need to make these decisions for you; it’s your choice.

PC Interface Sampling Rate
You have the option to choose at which rate (timed or depth transition) the Pro Plus 2.1 samples and stores data for later download to your PC. More frequent sampling will provide extreme detail of your dive profiles with limited storage capacity. Less frequent sampling, while it provides less detail, can store up to 150 dives!

Extended Range Digital Gauge Mode On/Off
Activate Digital Gauge Mode for freediving or dives conducted beyond the limits of the computer.

Water Activation On/Off
Do you tend to keep your equipment in a wet dive bag longer than you should? Are you an Instructor or Divemaster in an environment where your gear is never dry? Would you like to disable the water activation feature? Now you can.

*Battery Life: Battery life estimates are based on full-capacity batteries, and continuous usage as described.

- 7 days per week

- 2 dives per day

- 1 hour dive time

- 2 hour surface interval

- 18 hour interval from last dive to the first of the next day

**Oceanic Personal Dive Computers have user selectable Sampling Rates that determine when data is sampled and stored for subsequent download to associated PC interface programs. More frequent sampling provides more data per dive yet results in storage of fewer dives for download. Use with Air or Nitrox, with or without air integration, dive profiles, and other variables also effect the number of dives that can be stored. Although as many as 150 dives might be stored for consistent 60 foot dives with the Sampling Rate set for a 10 foot rate, as few as 3 may be stored when the profiles fluctuate and the sampling rate is set for a 2 second rate.
