i am new to diving and really dont know what i am looking for but the help from the staff at scuba.com assisted me to this compass that i need for advance open water. it is a wonderful compass easy to use and the retractable option helped with tucking it away in to a BCD pocket. would recommend this for classes or all around to have as a spare.

This is the compass to own. No consoles to flip around or constricting wrist/palm straps. Not easy to pull your arm perpendicular to your body to read when on your wrist or hand in a NW drysuit. The compass is there when I need it and retracted out of the way when I dont. Neatly clips onto my BCD. The unit is a bit bulky though ... but never a bother. Good price!

Bought this for doing Navigation Dive for Advanced Open Water. I use a wrist computer so I didnt want something else on my arm. The clip and retractor are great, just snapped it onto my BCD where its easily reachable. You can pull it out when you need it to take a bearing then it zips back into place.

Rating: OK, a bit bulky
Reviewer: Richard R.,
The compass is obviously the same one they mount on wrist bungies, just mounted on a retractor instead. It could be a lot smaller if integrated into the retractor housing, but I understand what theyve done.
The retractor cable seems pretty tough, and the lock switch is nice...I extend the cable about 3" and lock it, just long enough to tuck the compass into my BCD zippered pocket when not in use while leaving it clipped to the nearest D-ring.
Actual compass dial seems very good though, hence the 4- vs. 3-star review. I like it better than the more easily locked-up dial on my now defunct Oceanic "Swiv" console.

Switching to a wireless air integrated computer meant no more console gauge, so I needed a simple compass for teaching (scuba instructor) and personal use. This one did the trick. Its nothing fancy, but solid and functional. Its a little slow to spin and lock on to a bearing, so be patient. Rather than "built in" retractor, think of it as a "built onto" a fairly large retractor, so its not exactly low profile, but the ability to lock the retractor is nice for keeping it close when not in use.
