Affordable purchase
Reviewer: Gerald H.,
This is a nice dive reel. I primarily use it for my safety sausage, due to not being cave certified. The reel itself is a little large, however, I have not had any problems with tangling, bird nesting, etc. This reel is a an excellent purchase for the price, especially if you dont find yourself using it on every dive.

Reviewer: Jeff D.,
I found the reel to be in good working order...it is a better float reel than a cavern safety reel. If you want a float reel this will be a good purchase. If you want a cavern safety reel I think you should invest a little more money and get a quality reel.

Good entry level reel
Reviewer: Michael Smith, - View all my reviews
Im an active instructor and was looking for a reel to use for teaching nav and wreck penetration. This is certainly not of Dive Rite or Hollis quality, but it is perfectly fine for navigation. I would be hesitant to use it for deep wreck penetration, but its fine for basics and teaching. First thing to do is lay it out and mark every 5ft, with a different color, mark 15ft, 50ft and 100ft. Just remember, wrapping it around the wreck shortens the measured distance.

Recommended by a friend, Purchased for safety!
Reviewer: Frank Ostermiller,
I was recently in Cozumel, and I had a reel on my BC that was fairly new. When I splashed, the reel went to free mode, ran out about 30 feet of line before I noticed it and got tangled in the boat prop! Luckily the prop wasnt turning, or I could have been sucked into it. Right then and there I decided to invest in a better reel. This reel has a click latch that prevents unwanted unreeling. It has a heavier line than my old reel, and I believe it will stand up to the test of time. I must confess I looked at this reel when I purchased my old one, but I chose to save about five dollars. I know now that five dollars could have meant my life! Better equipment means better safety!

Best reel for the price
Reviewer: Benjamin Kim,
Its not that expensive and has a good line guide with spool prevention. The only problem Id had with it is that the line got severed, and I had to surface to fix it using a screwdriver. It got all tangled up. Other than the line problem incident, its been great since then. All my other friends got the cheap finger reels. I see that they have to be extra careful to not get them tangled, but they still manage to get them tangled every so often. This is my reel of choice without breaking the bank.

Purchased this reel to replace the line holder which came with my diver below float. It worked like a charm. Very easy to unwind and rewind. Easy to maintain hold on handle with gloves. Can also be used to deploy surface marker when making safety stop

I bought this reel and line to attach to my dive flag float. Its perfect! It was easy to attach, the reel is clearly visible underwater in low viz, and it doesnt get tangled when rewinding. I would recommend it to anyone for this or similar purpose.

Good beginner reel
Reviewer: Dino S.,
Bought this for my first reel. The line on it is relatively small and feels a little flimsy. It freespools easily and hasnt tangled yet at all. Just need to get a brass clip to attach to my BC. Ill probably respool with heavier line to make it a bit more versatile. Otherwise, its a good reel. Plastic doesnt feel weak or thin.

031488 Scubamax Reel 150 foot
Reviewer: Charles E H., - View all my reviews
I mistakenly purchased this thinking Id use it to launch my safety sausage at my 15 to 20 foot safety stop. It is too cumbersome for that purpose and Ive gone back to a simple reel. That said, the Scubamax reel will be fine for towing my diver below tube.

Great reel for the price. Separate switches for free spool or drag. Even comes with a clip which is worth at least $3. No better reel for the price! Get two or three for Christmas/dive buddy gifts at the low price.

Used this reel on a recent weeks wreck diving trip to send up my DSMB. It is quite compact but cheaply made. The line is quite thin and showed signs of wear at the end of the week. I had to trim the base of the reels winder knob as it did not rotate freely when its securing bolt was tightened and consequently when you wound the reel the knob securing bolt unscrewed itself. All that said the reel survived the week ( 9 dives) and never let me down. In hindsight I would buy the reel with the longer line.

This is NOT a great reel for beginners that feel the need for a thick line. It IS a great reel for its small size, the thin but strong line for those a little more comfortable going into overhead environments. I did have to add a stainless steel clip though to clip it on to my BC without interfering or entangling. A very good reel for a good price.

THIS MAX REEL IS VERY LIGHT WEIGHT, IT HAS A REEL STOP ON IT AND A HANDLE TO WIND UP, SO IT IS REALLY HELPFUL AND YOU DONT STRESS OUT ON IF YOUR LINE IS CAUGHT ON ANYTHING! WE HAVE IT ATTACHED TO OUR DIVE MARKER FLAG AND AFTER USING SOME OF THE OTHER LINES THAT YOU HAVE TO SELF WIND WE WILL NOT GO BACK! WE HAVE BOUGHT A FEW AND HAVE ONE IN THE DIVE BAG ALL THE TIME AND ONE ON OUR PERSONAL BOAT! IT HAS MADE OUR DIVES EASIER AND WE CAN PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THE SITE THAN WORRIED ABOUT THE LINE.

Just used this reel in florida dive trip. Worked great on the wreck and found the anchor line in very low vis condition. Has nice latch so no free wheeling line is heavy so didnt have to worry about being cut on entrance of wreck.

Reel with click-stop mechanics
Reviewer: christopher krause, - View all my reviews
this is by far the best tool ive used to maintain control of a dive buoy. that said, tethered "wrap around" reels will work fine if youre just ping down to a location and are going to tie the buoy to a stationary object.
spend the extra cash on this reel if youre going to be towing a dive ball or buoy behind you. it has a comfortable handle and the placement of the drag release click stop mechanism is perfect for thumb control.

compared to a 160 dollar DiveRite reel this is great. Depends on what you want to use it for. I wouldnt take it in a cave, but for light wreck penetration of finding you down line it works great.

Thus far the max weel has performed as expected. No problems or issues. The drag maintains good tension and the "dog" is a good feature to keep the line from free spooling.
