About Me: Moved to St Croix last year, mostly to dive, but gotta work to support my SCUBA habit. We´re suffering from the aftermath of over fishing, but it´s turning around now! 8^)

Diving, of course... Paintball (I´m KY Airsmith), ´puters, horses, ASL/sign language, roller skating (surprise!), and other things I never have time for anymore.. sigh
Interests
Many and varied... but the "activities" above are closely tied in eh? I´m getting back into reading more thanks to renewed interest in a Kindle, then Sony Touch (maybe iPad soon?). Even getting some exercise, which I´m sorely in need of! 8^P .... Considering putting myself thru commercial diver training. (Any advice there is certainly appreciated.)

If I could only choose one, it´d be BLUEGRASS! otherwise I listen to a wide variety of things, depending on my mood and what I have at hand (Zune, Kindle, computer, cellphone...) I hate talk radio (nothing personal) so if it´s not playing music, the radio is moving or off.

Yup... it´s a bit expensive, being an island, so most stuff is shipped, but you can budget for it. ...and it is surrounded by clear, warm, blue water (in most areas, there is a plant on the SW side)... Written by Kahu on 11/3/2009
So you have to work to support your diving habit! How did you find a job in St. Croix? Is the cost of living very high? Marketing, hospitality, historic preservation....Just need to make enough to buy air and pay the electric bill.Don´t want to visit, want to live on an island surrounded by clear, warm, blue water. on 11/3/2009
Looking forward to that!! Cam´ll come back some day.. sigh.. it´s an excellent starter if you can spend that much (DX-1200HD) and will shoot basic HD video (if you have a good hi-speed card) which is nice. My next purchase in that vein will be a decent video machine (someday... hehe). 8^) Written by Kahu on 7/21/2009
I have about 800 photos from Honduras that I have yet to go through and post..I will tag you when I get them up. Hope all is well with your camera Written by SCUBA_Fish on 7/21/2009
Hey so maybe you do need to move hahaha. But seriously, PR is as seen on tv. Beautiful. Anyways you´re not far from here so save some money (it´s not cheap around here) and if I have the money too I´ll show you ´round Written by kiry on 7/11/2009
Thanks! I read a review from someone when I was researching the DX-1200 and they had located one, but I suspect it was something compatible, not something marketed for the DX-1200 specifically... sigh.. 8^) Written by Kahu on 6/29/2009
I haven´t found a higher capacity battery, unfortunately. I´ve been to sooo many camera places too and they don´t have a clue about Sea on 6/29/2009
Kahu,
Thank you my friend. Talk to you soon and keep in touch.

Well, north side or west side... depends on who you talk to. You have excellent wall dives on both... the wrecks are on the west side. On days with any rough seas the west side will always be calmer. And the pier on the west side has Fredriksted Pier, touted as one of the best macro dives in the world. It was a mite murky last Saturday when I dove it but still nice. St Croix Ultimate Bluewater Adventures (the stcroixscuba.com site I mentioned) has boats on both sides.. nice... hehe.. Buck Island is supposed to have a dive site but the whole island is permit only so you have to go thru one of the charters that go out there. Buck gets the snorkelers mostly but I haven´t gotten around to diving out there yet. There is a ferry that runs once a day (but not on Wed) from STX to STT and a ferry the runs between STT and St John more regular. The one between STX and STT is more expensive of course. There´s also a seaplane as well (RT $180). I´ll have to find the info on the STX (St Croix) ferry $$ and sched.. 8^) Written by Kahu on 6/8/2009
Kahu,
Wow that was fast! Is the best diving on the north side of the island? Which is better to stay closer to Christiansted or Fredericksted (hope I spelled them right)? Can you dive Buck Island or just snorkel? Are there ferry´s that run to the other islands, I would like to visit St. John? If so, $$$? Checked out stcroixscuba.com and they look great, thanks for the info.
Keep in touch.

You should definitely find Roatan a very nice dive trip, have fun there! April is a fine time to visit St Croix. It´s the end of the ´´tourist´´ season, so you may find some deals on your stay. I know the dive shop I frequent (stcroixscuba.com) does some travel arranging if that helps. St Croix is much more laid back than St Thomas which is the main tourist/cruise ship destination. We get a cruise ship every other Sat or so and the occasional fly in visitors. This island is bigger but has nearly the same population so St Thomas is a bit crowded for my taste. If the dive shop doesn´t have a good travel package for ya I have another couple that does that as well. Several hotels and resorts around, mostly on the north side in a wide range of ´´conditions´´... hehe I´m living on the north/east area myself, nice neighborhood. As for work, there´s a large petroleum plant (HOVENSA) here, otherwise the standard array of opportunities but limited job market. I went 7 months before finding steady employment! Start with that and let me know when you need more.. 8^) Written by Kahu on 6/7/2009
Hey, Kahu,
Good reading my friend. My family and I were thinkgin about visiting the USVI next spring (spring break for thekids - April - good time to visit?) We have nev er been there, in fact we are going on our first ´´dedicated´´ dive trip on August 29th for a week in Roatan (so excited I can´t hardly keep a thought in my head). Living here in west Texas taking care of our horses and cattle has not left mcuh time to ´´explore´´. We are now in a position to start getting away. How is St. Croix (people, island, diving, food, etc.)? Would you recommend a place to stay (hotel, resort, etc. and side of the island best to stay?) Aslo, what dive operator would you recommend? What part of the island do you live? What kind of work is there on the island?
Keep in touch as a man can never have too many friends!
Respectfull,
Tim Scott
