Scuba Diving Event March 2: El Segundo, CA, USA

Robert Marx, is a renowned diver, author and historian with more than 50 years of original research in every major archive and library around the world. He has amassed files comprising data on more than 28,500 shipwrecks around the globe dating from the Greek era to modern times, including all known shipwrecks whose cargoes contained at least $10 million worth of treasure. He has written more than 50 books, hundreds of articles and produced or shot over 50 documentary films giving expert advice on locating, surveying, excavating, identifying and preserving artifacts from sunken vessels. A historian by instinct and an adventurer at heart, Marx sailed from Spain to San Salvador in Nina II, a replica of one of Columbus´ tiny ships, discovered Mayan temples in the jungles of Central America and has discovered and excavated ancient shipwrecks in over 60 sites worldwide. Marx has lectured professionally for more than forty-five years throughout the United States and in forty-two countries. As this year´s featured speaker, he will once again present CWD with tales of shipwrecks, salvage and treasure.

the festival´s introductory weekend will take flight with culturally rich traditional ceremonies from native americans and a polynesian connection. following a festive parade and evening luau, the host of fun amusements begin such as an adjoining street fair replete with arts and crafts, classic car displays, and vintage boat exhibits adorning the harbor walkways detailed accounts from local historians land and water concerts and many others. a convenient shuttle service, provided by festival venues, will allow guests to easily access the myriad pursuits during both weekends. guests will have the potential to see the massive majestic mammals from a pleasant view aboard ocean going vessels water taxis will be available to those desiring a calm cruise through the harbor. while the majority of the days´ events will take place at the harbor, celebrants who would rather stick to land can enjoy a scenic vista off the dana point headlands conservation park, which is a navigational landmark for the migrating gray whales.a special new feature of the festival, a kid´s adventure expo, will complement the event through a unique approach: young guests who participate in the area will need to temporarily turn in their cell phones before they are admitted. beyond, a world of watersports wonders such as scuba, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, sup, and many other activities awaits. local watersports businesses will be on hand to help showcase the joy of sea and surf: west wind sailing will feature sailing and sup girl in the curl will highlight surfing and beach city scuba will illustrate the ins and outs of scuba and snorkeling. additionally, a stationary yacht will allow intrepid young adventurers to explore it. according to the festival´s utive director, penny elia, the tradeoff was made in order to help participants break free from “nature deficit disorder”: a hypothesis in which people suffer from a disjointed view of the natural world due to heavy use of technology and electronic entertainment.“kids are so locked into their screens and computers – we´re going to unplug them at least for a time during this particular area,” elia explains. “we´re going to show them what they can take away that day without their cellphones out in the water.”

Scuba Diving Event February 26: Avalon, CA, USA

The Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup is an annual dive event held at Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island. The event was started in the 1970s by the local dive community in an effort to cleanup Avalon Harbor, and this event is the only time diving is permitted in the Harbor. Over the years, this event has grown to become one of the most popular dive events in Southern California.

Scuba Diving Event February 22: Brooklyn Center, MN, USA

the upper midwest scuba &amp adventure travel show is sponsored by the great lakes shipwreck preservation society. the great lakes shipwreck preservation society is a non-profit, 501.c.3 organization established in 1996 to stabilize and protect our deteriorating shipwrecks of the great lakes region. the glsps sponsored scuba show began in 1999 as “dive into the past” to showcase shipwreck diving, sport diving and maritime history in the great lakes. the show has expanded over the years to include: ocean diving, technical diving, and adventure travel. the umsat show is the major fundraiser to support the glsps projects that help preserve and document shipwrecks. glsps sponsors many programs and service projects each year to realize its purpose. these range from our north shore shipwreck buoy program, to our put-it-back program, our national register of historic places nomination program, and our shipwreck stabilization work. each year glsps partners with lake superior marine museum association, wisconsin underwater archeology association and superior museums to do annual maintenance and improvements to the museum ship ss meteor in superior wisconsin. membership is open to anyone.
