Come join Desert Divers for one of our favorite dive destinations and happens to be some of the best diving in Baja! On this weeklong trip of world-class diving, we plan to visit some of the best dive sites in the Sea of Cortez, in search of majestic Mantas and awe-inspiring Whale Sharks. Among the sites we plan to visit are El Bajo Seamount, world famous for schooling hammerheads and other large pelagics, La Reina, home to a number of Manta Rays, and Los Islotes, the largest sea lion colony in the Sea of Cortez. The wreck of the Salvatierra offers an abundant array of marine life from octopus to huge panamic morays to the very rare golden grouper.

Late summer and early fall are ideal times to visit the southern Sea of Cortez. This time of year usually brings water temperatures in the mid eighties and visibility ranging from 80-100 feet. On the surface the weather should be quite inviting with temperatures in the eighties. Optimal weather conditions also improve the chances of observing the large pelagics of the Sea of Cortez, such as Pacific Manta Rays, with the possibility of encountering the largest of them all, the Whale Shark. Definitely an experience of a lifetime.

Dive aboard the Nautilus Explorer and discover for yourself the adrenaline rush of the majestic Great White Shark!
There are 3 places in the world where you can see great white sharks – Africa, Australia and Guadalupe Island. We believe that Guadalupe is the best of the best with at least 102 great white sharks populating the special bay in which we stage our submersible cage diving operations. The Nautilus Explorer is the only “shark boat” that offers evening departures, virtually unlimited diving and all the services of a luxury liveaboard safari boat from attentive hostesses to a sparkling clear hot tub. Sea conditions in our anchorage are generally calm with 75 – 120 ft visibility in very blue water and water temperatures of low to mid 70’s. We’ll depart out of SanDiego, CA heading to Guadalupe aboard the Nautilus Explorer. The submersible cages go up and down every 30 minutes, always with a divemaster in each one, and diving is done via surface supplied “hookah” with backup dive gear in each cage. And YES, the divemaster will often open the upper hatch on the cage to allow an even more intimate experience!

When you step off the plane in Galapagos, you are entering a magical world. The wonders of Galapagos will unfold before your eyes. The on-board, multi-lingual guides will share their in-depth knowledge of these volcanic islands. Snorkeling and bird watching excursions are also conducted between dives. Every Explorer Ventures charter includes thrilling shark dives at remote Wolf and Darwin Islands.

Due to their isolation, the Galapagos remained undisturbed for millions of years and this resulted in the evolution of a number of unique individual ecosystems, with many species found nowhere else in the world, of which the giant Galapagos tortoises and the marine Iguana are the most famous. These islands are a UNESCO natural world heritage site and the second largest marine reserve in the world. Located on the hot equator, water temperatures are cooler than you would expect, due to local upwellings, which along with the Humboldt current originating in Antarctica, bring cool, nutrient rich waters.

The mixture of warm currents from Central America with this cooler water has produced an amazing variety of climates, flora and fauna. In the highlands of the larger islands are extinguished craters covered with lush, endemic could forests, while closer to the shore, it becomes desert-like, characterized by the towering Opuntia cactus and spiny Acacias. The fauna too provides some unusual sights-sea lions sharing habitat with tropical flamingos, and cold water penguins feeding amongst brightly colored tropical fish. These conditions, and the fearlessness of the land and marine species to man, have made the Galapagos Islands a unique place for nature to express itself. No wonder they are called “The Enchanted Islands”.

Both above and below the sea, this is the ultimate eco-dive adventure. As our guest between dives you will have time to explore and photograph the abundant wildlife and craggy volcanic scenery, while walking along trails through colonies of sea lions, marine iguanas and sea birds. Snorkel with the only penguins living in the tropics. You will marvel and the size of the giant Galapagos tortoises and learn about evolution and the history of Galapagos at the Charles Darwin Research Station. You will be accompanied at all times by trained naturalist guides who will explain and interpret the unusual sights you will see.
