The new Suunto D5 is a dive computer that is designed to be very easy to use and highly customizable. Aimed at both beginners and pro divers, it contributes to your enjoyment underwater, aside from providing the necessary metrics for safe and efficient dives.

After a bit of waiting following its launch at the DEMA Show, the Suunto D5 release date was pushed to the end of March 2019. With Leisure Pro already shipping the Suunto D5, you may want to check out its key benefits and features via our review.

What We Love About the Suunto D5 Dive Computer

Easy-to-Use Interface

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned diver, one of the top features that you would be looking for in a personal dive computer is its ease of use. You wouldn’t want to be pressing too many buttons or taking such a long time trying to familiarize yourself with the controls before you can access your desired information. This is particularly important as dive computers are considered to be life-saving equipment that any diver should be able to rely on to avoid decompression sickness.

Fortunately, the Suunto D5 has a simple interface that beginners would easily understand. It bears a clear color screen (MIP display) whose LED backlight can be adjusted depending on your viewing needs (after all, a dive computer would be useless if it can’t be read in broad daylight or at night).

The screen prominently displays everything you need to know, like the depth and time, and has a switchable window at the bottom so that you can view your tank pressure, your no-decompression limit (NDL), compass, and timer.  We also love that they’re presented as understandable graphics. The middle button can be used to change the view according to your desired preference.

With just three buttons to think about when accessing the menus and controls, the Suunto D5 requires very little effort to use underwater. At the same time, it helps eliminate potential misuse of dive tables and a slew of problems that could be caused by inaccurate information.

Wireless Air Integration

Aside from providing important figures related to depth and time underwater, the Suunto D5 is capable of providing air tank-related information. This makes it worth checking out if you’re a diver who wants access to vital information with a quick flick of the wrist.

Through easy wireless pairing with the Suunto Tank POD Transmitter on your first stage regulator, it can tell you your tank’s current pressure and amount of air supply left. As you can imagine, these can be difficult to calculate without air integration, especially in varying diving conditions. Being able to have an air-integrated dive computer, like the Suunto D5, can prevent air emergency situations and potentially save lives underwater.

Speaking of wireless integration, the Suunto D5 can also connect to the Suunto App wirelessly, should you want to check out your progress (previous dive information) and share your adventures with your dive buddies.

Customizable Looks

The Suunto D5 gives you a number of different options, should you wish to customize the color of your dive watch. It’s primarily available in four color options: all black, a black watch face with a lime strap, a stainless steel bezel with a white strap, and a stainless steel bezel with a black strap.

A number of replacement straps made of leather and in various colors can be added to your Suunto D5. This way, you can choose a color scheme that matches your diving gear.
