Your child may want to try their hand at scuba diving, or you may be an avid diver and want to share your love of the hobby with your children. Either scenario is great, because there are many benefits to taking your children scuba diving. Let’s take a look at some of these benefits.

The Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) states that children as young as 10 can begin scuba diving classes, but you certainly don’t want to just drop your kids in the water and see what happens.

The child’s maturity, attention span, reasoning skills, and swimming ability should be assessed before starting them in a scuba diving program. Children must be able to handle the dive equipment and have the stamina to endure a dive. If your child meets all the criteria, they will soon be enjoying the benefits of diving.

Once your child has passed the diving instruction class, they will probably be excited about going on their first dive. If you are a diver yourself, you are probably just as excited, if not more, as is your child! The two of you can now share a personal interest and bond in one of the most unique ways.

Some instructors believe that the younger a child learns to dive, the better. They will be more comfortable in the water, and quickly learn the ropes. If you are also there to coach and encourage your child, they are likely to be even more at ease.

Kids who learn to scuba dive will quickly link conservation and habitat preservation to their newfound skills. Once they see the beautiful underwater world and all that inhabit it, they will strive to keep it a clean, safe place for their new ocean friends. It is likely they will become proactive in their community and teach their friends the responsibility of keeping our planet clean.

Diving is a sport that may seem dangerous, but with the right approach, it doesn’t have to be more dangerous than any other sport children choose to be involved in. Once your child learns the correct way to dive, safety will always be in the forefront of their mind.

As an added bonus, scuba diving also teaches a child math skills, physics, and natural science, which can make them more critical thinkers in the classroom.

Nurturing your child’s natural curiosity will instill them with a sense of value and responsibility for this planet, and as they say, the children are our future. If your child has an affinity for the ocean, don’t hesitate to see if diving is right for them!
