The Galapagos Archipelago is located in the Pacific Ocean, 600 miles west of Ecuador. There are 19 main islands and numerous smaller ones. Although the Galapagos are located on the equator, water temperatures are cooler than you would expect, due to local upwellings of nutrient-rich waters and currents from Antarctica, carried by the Humboldt Stream. The mixture of warm currents from Central America with this cooler ocean water produces an amazing cocktail of climates, flora and fauna.
